United Kingdom Do you still buy DVDs?

In short, no. However, in rare cases, I will opt for the DVD counterpart. Most recently, I went to buy Hot Tub Time Machine and the Blu-ray was £18.99, whereas the DVD was on sale at £6.99. The special features were exactly the same on both, so I went with the DVD as I couldn't justify the price, especially for a comedy title. Fox titles tend to be expensive and never go down in price...

Anyone else here?

Nope.

The last DVD's I bought were in 2009, which was all four of the Lilo & Stitch films, which I now no longer have as I sold them all.

I still have Lilo & Stitch recorded on my Sky HD planner though, and will most likely keep it there until it comes out on Blu-ray

I generally buy DVDs only for older TV programmes, or films that aren't available on Blu-ray and won't be for a while, if ever. If I've got the choice between two new films, I'll wait for the Blu-ray to come down in price a bit before getting it, rather than buying the DVD straight away.

I would say ATM I'm about 60% Blu-ray and 40% DVD purchases. I like a lot of foreign films, and small budget stuff which I doubt will get a Blu-ray release, so I try not to deny myself owning my favourite films because of a small likelihood that a Blu-ray will come.

I'm also buying TV series and comedies on DVD, as many have been shot in SD so I know that a Blu-ray won't come.

That being said, it can be quite annoying when you see a Blu-ray release come out, when you went ahead and bought the DVD at a significant price, because you thought there was next to no chance of a DVD. I guess the same also happens when you buy a Blu-ray, and then another distributor brings out that Blu-ray with much better quality and extras.

Blurays have made me mental (not literally) but you know...

Since i got a Bluray player just after Christmas (impulse buy) i now refuse to buy anything other than Steelbooks/Blurays with slips.

Shame really because loads of blurays i want that dont come with slips and loads of dvd boxsets that aint out on Bluray.

Only none Blurays ill buy now will be DVD boxsets i already own the rest of the set too, Family guy, Simpsons etc.

Only DVD's I'm still buying are of TV series that I have the majority of on DVD (ie CSI, Smallville, Supernatural and NCIS).

I refuse to buy Blu-rays of TV series that haven't received an upgrade in the audio department (Supernatural, Fringe).

Certainly, otherwise I wouldn't be able to obtain any classic Doctor Who, and also other TV shows like Blackadder and Family Guy.

So long as it's very, very cheap and isn't on Blu-ray I will still buy films, but only in very rare cases and if it's a film I really want.

Why deprive myself of stuff I like, even if it isn't in HD.

Even if they have an upgrade in picture quality?

Are saying comedies, as in comedy movies are shot in SD? You're sadly mistaken. They, just like 99% of movies in all other genres are either shot on film or HD camcorders. I myself have a few comedies on blu-ray(DVD is disgusting. I refuse to watch DVD) like Superbad, Easy A, Zombieland, Pineapple Express, Shrek:The Whole Story, and with the exception of pineapple express, they all look great-fantastic because they were either shot on FILM or HD CAMCORDERS and the studios put out a GOOD TRANSFER.

I think he means as in sitcoms, not films. All British sitcoms from the 1960s-1990s would have been filmed using OB cameras, meaning it was on videotape, and as such in SD.

TBH i have been buying some disney classics lately on dvd only because most of them wont be released for years on bluray so i might aswell get them now when they are in the buy one get one free offer. Other than that no. I will always be swayed by a bluray purely because of the PQ and AQ.

I believe he should have specified, considering he said tv shows, put a comma, then said as well as comedies. I automatically assumed he meant film.

And as for the DVD statement, I do find it disgusting. I can only watch blu-ray. Anything less, I refuse. To put this into perspective, for Christmas my mom bought around 11 blu-rays for me after I gave her a list. One of those was The Ultimate Matrix Collection. She bought it on DVD because she couldn't find it on blu-ray in stores. I just went on Amazon.com and waited for the blu-ray to arrive in the mail. I refused to watch the dvd's to hold me over until then.

No, I don't buy DVDs anymore. The last one I purchased was Rob Zombie's Halloween, simply because there wasn't a BD release of it.

I don't watch TV shows either so DVDs are a thing of the past for me.

How could you?! Just kidding, at least you still have the first one recorded though.

How is it, even though it's just an upscale? I don't have an HD subscription (couldn't afford it at the time) so I don't get Disney CineMagic in HD. It has been on Channel 5 once before though, when they decide to show it on that channel again then I'll record the HD broadcast.

Anyway, back on topic, I still occasionally buy DVDs. The last three I bought were:
Capitalism: A Love Story - I needed it to watch for a uni assignment and wasn't willing to pay much for something I hadn't seen.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles - Got it just before Christmas, I really wanted to watch it again and I don't see it being out on Blu-ray anytime soon.
The Smurfs - Series 1 and 2, again because I didn't see them coming out on Blu-ray anytime soon. And they're distributed in the UK by Fabulous Films, and I think they have quickly gained a reputation as one of the worst companies for Blu-ray to date, based on their treatment of Airwolf and their response to the criticism that received. I did, however, buy The Smurfs and the Magic Flute on Blu-ray and I thought that had a pretty good transfer.

I do and I will until they become unavailable. I love my Blu-rays and I love my DVD's. Most of the TV stuff is still DVD in this country and I wouldn't want to eliminate those from my purchase choices. I do have a £5 limit for feature films though and I rarely go over that, so I have to wait until they drop in price.

The TV stuff is different though I have a few Star Trek, Stargate, Seinfeld, Smallville, Doctor Who and 24 collections (and a few more) I want to finish off.

I think I only bought Star Trek on VHS after I converted to DVD and that was the complete movie collection (at that time anyways) and a few DS9 tapes but I still used the recorder for a while, until it died.

I don't see why I'd ever give up buying them especially as there's a huge cataloge to choose from and prices are very reasonable. Plus think of all the classic films that may never appear on Blu-ray or film-noir collection is pitiful. So are our foreign language titles.

NathanDrakeFan, I can't understand why someone would think DVD's are disgusting, obviously it's your opinion and I respect that but I cherish my stuff and you missed out on a lot of great stuff with The Ultimate Matrix Collection on DVD!

Correct.

I believe that Supernatural and Fringe both look considerably better than their DVD counterparts, but if Warner can't be bothered to include an HD audio option on there, then I can't justify the purchase.

If HBO can do it with True Blood and Deadwood, and Paramount can do it with CSI Season 1, then why can't Warner? They've done it with Band of Brothers, so what's the issue with other releases?

I don't think it's just an upscale, I don't know that much about HD stuff on Sky though if it's marked in HD, just like the movies on the Sky Movies HD channels, I've always thought it was true HD and not just an upscale like alot of programs on the other HD channels when they're not actually marked as HD.

Anyway, it look's excellent, and the same goes for all other Disney classic's I've seen on Disney Cinemagic HD

I also had Lilo & Stitch 2 recorded in HD at one point aswell, which also looked great

I buy alot of old cartoons that aren't out on Blu, and most likely will never come out as most of them aren't even available on DVD in their entirety! Also some old tv shows i watched as a kid. And the odd film or two which isn't on Blu which i desperately want to see again.
