Default Pioneer BDR-202 burner (PC)

I just ordered a Pioneer BDR-202 Blu-ray burner from Videoguys and would appreciate any comments from other users of this drive before I install it. Thanks!

I don't believe this guy writes BluRay dual layer, meaning your overall capacity on write operations will be 25GB. At least I don't think this drive has this capability. Should have gotten the Sony BWU-100A.

Hmmmm. Looks like the Sony drive you mentioned only has a 2X burn speed compared to 4X for the Pioneer, so that's an interesting trade-off. Since I don't anticipate a need or desire for burning dual-layer discs I guess I'm okay, but thanks for the tip.

You are correct that the new Pioneer drive can burn at 4x on select BD-R media (I hear Verbatim works well). The Sony cannot. However, the Pioneer cannot write or READ dual layer BD-R or BD-RE discs (it does fine with BD-ROM dual layered discs). So, it's definitely a trade off. Otherwise it seems to be a well-built drive.

Yeah, I wondered about that. Is it possible this could be changed via a future firmware update?

Will this player be able to play the newer Blu-Ray movies that are 50GB?

I just got the same drive from Videoguys.

Once I got my Sata cables, the drive installed easily. Plug and Play.

So far I am using the TDK BD-RE media that came with the package.

I am using Encore CS3, and have had variable success getting short clips to play on the PS3. I am still trying to sort out if it is issues with the media or software.

I was getting an error on the larger burns until I disabled my virus software.

There are enough compatability issues and expense with single layer media. I don't think I would ever use dual layer anyway, or at least until I get my 20x drive in four years.

Ah, I hadn't thought about that. Guess I need to find an SATA cable or visit the local computer store.

I agree about not using dual-layer discs and don't anticipate anyone giving me one, so I should be okay for now. Good to know though what the limitations of the drive are, at least with the current firmware.
