Default Carrie Remake

I've Got a Bucket of Pig's Blood with Screen Gems' Name All Over It: 'Carrie' to Be Remade

Quote:
looks like MGM is finally dusting off their shoulders and sleeves after surviving a near devastating bankruptcy.

It's being reported by Deadline that Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the playwright and comic book writer who was brought on to rewrite and hopefully save Broadway's "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark," has just been set by MGM and Screen Gems to write a remake of Carrie, the Stephen King thriller about the hyperkinetic teenager who gets pushed too far at the prom and wreaks havoc on her fellow high school students. King's bestselling book was turned into the 1976 film that starred Sissy Spacek, John Travolta, Amy Irving and Piper Laurie as the repressive mother.

On Carrie, he will write a version that is more faithful to the King book than the earlier movie, much the same as Joel and Ethan Coen went back to the Charles Portis novel True Grit to present a version that didn't really feel like a remake. Aguirre-Sacasa has a relationship with the author, after writing the graphic novel version of King's "The Stand," King's seminal apocalyptic novel. At least there's that...

Well hopefully the girl they cast as Carrie this time will actually be pretty.

I'm not against eye candy, but having a pretty girl in the role of Carrie would undermine both the character and intent. Sissy Spacek's selection for the role is what makes the original work: an average-looking, socially-awkward girl who isn't part of the 'in' crowd that wants to be acknowledged, if not accepted by her peers.

More than likely, I'll avoid the remake (as I do all others) because they are incomparable to the originals. If I want to see Carrie, I'm watching the Sissy Spacek version.

The 2002 TV movie version of Carrie was fairly true to the novel. IMO, this doesn't need to be remade other than the fact that younger people tend to avoid anything "old" and would only watch this story if it were newly made.

The New Carrie May Have True Grit

Quote:
Teenage actress Hailee Steinfeld, who won an Academy Award nomination last year for her breakthrough role in True Grit, is rumored to be up for title role in Screen Gems' remake of Carrie.

CinemaBlend claims that "that Carrie's producers are eyeing Hailee Steinfeld as a top candidate for the part of the tormented high school girl played by Sissy Spacek in the original. That doesn't mean, of course, that Hailee has it… or even wants it. The script is still being written and they won't make any decisions until it's done, nor are the film's producers likely to confirm which direction they're leaning. For now just consider Hailee as a possibility, a really good kind of possibility."

There were some rather flimsy rumors circulating recently that former Transformers starlet Megan Fox was lobbying for the role, but at 25, she may be too old to play a high school student. Not that that's ever stopped Hollywood before, mind you.

I love the original Carrie. One of my favorite movies from Brian De Palma. Seen it a hundred times. While I'm skeptic about another remake, Hailee seems like a good actress to play Carrie. But who will play the mother? Piper Laurie gave such an iconic performance as the religious crazed mother, it will be tough for anybody taking that role to be compared to her.
