Default DUALSHOCK 3 has improved rumble tech after all?

1UP MGS4 Preview

Quote:
We did enjoy the various rumble effects employed by the new Dual Shock 3 controller, though: As explosions rattled around Snake, we could actually feel the direction from which they were coming based on what part of the controller virbated.
On The 1UP Show TGS Special they go into more detail:

Download: WMV 640x480 | QT 640x480

Rumble wasn't working for half the demo but when it was..

Shane: "..explosions were happening around me further in the environment and I could tell where they were based on what part of my controller was rumbling; and it isn't like the DUALSHOCK where you feel weights spinning, it's different, it feels new.

Ryan: "It's new tech, it's totally next-gen rumble"

...

Shane: "and also the levels of rumble from very soft to very strong seem like a broader range to what we're used to in controllers."

It is funny how just announcing this controller makes me want MGS4 about a 100 times more.

this pretty much deminishes any advantage over gettin the 360 version of any game. of course, this doesn't rule out half ass ports (ahem, EA)... i never liked the idea of the 360 having something that the ps3 doesn't... it's on now *****es!

sorry to burst your bubble though:

Confirmed: DualShock 3 Rumble Identical to DualShock 2 Tech

Apparently Phil Harrison wasn't kidding when he said that rumble is a last-gen feature, because the rumble in the DualShock 3 is the same, Sony told GameDaily BIZ. We also discussed the impact rumble would have on battery life and if DualShock 3 will be packed in with PS3 hardware.

When Sony finally unveiled its new rumble controller for the PS3 at the Tokyo Game Show, details were somewhat scarce. Would the DualShock 3 feature some new kind of rumble functionality? Would Sony take advantage of Immersion's new next-generation vibration technology?

Apparently the answer is no. Sony Computer Entertainment America's Kimberly Otzman, corporate communications, confirmed to GameDaily BIZ, "The rumble feature on the DualShock 3 is the same as DualShock 2."

One of the rumors in the months leading up to the announcement was that in addition to figuring out how to balance motion sensing and rumble in one controller, Sony's engineers also had to figure out how to maximize battery life with rumble reintroduced.

Otzman said that "battery life depends on how often the rumble feature is used." She added, "When the rumble feature is completely turned off, it's equivalent with the Sixaxis (maximum of 30 hours) and when the rumble feature is active it's about 15 hours, under SCE standard testing conditions."

Another burning question we had was whether or not the DualShock 3 would effectively replace the Sixaxis. The original announcement from Sony indicated that the DualShock 3 would launch as an accessory in Japan, but did not indicate if the North American release would be as an accessory or as part of a new PS3 purchase. Our guess is that the DualShock 3 will eventually be packed in with PS3 hardware shipments and will become the de facto standard controller over the long-term.

Regarding a pack-in with PS3 hardware Otzman said, "Nothing has been decided yet, stay tuned."

Chances are what people are feeling playing games is more reliable than what some talking marketing head knows over at Sony. It wouldn't be the first time there was bad communication within Sony.

there's also the psychological impluses to think something is new when it's really not. and note, she's not a marketing head... she's a communications head... therefore she's gonna be puttin' out the press releases

I wonder how rumble will affect the length of the controller charge vs a non-rumble controller.

We'll have to wait for Nikkei Electronics to take it apart and compare the parts with the original SixAxiS.

Rumble is last gen. I like long battery life on my sixaxis anyway. Keeping up with the Jones doesnt always mean it is neccesory. How about making me some good games?

Kojima Productions Assistant Producer Ryan Payton says DUALSHOCK 3 is better than DUALSHOCK 2. Doesn't say exactly how so.

Ye, but not on critical game reporters. These guys are critical and would really check if rumble is next-gen or not.

Plus, Ryan Payton from Kojima productions confirmed it (this confirmation came after the Otzman interview).

I will be getting 2 of these as my main controllers and my 2 current sixxaxis controllers will be my backup. I just can't wait for some good old fashioned 4 player split screen action. I've been holding out on buying 2 more controllers since I read the first rumours about the dualshock 3.
