Interesting...THOR has grossed almost $178M at the box office which isn't really considered a huge win, so we will see...

I really liked the first one.

But with $437 million worldwide with a few territories left to open, I would say it's a big win considering who he is. We still have Blu-Ray to debut as well.

I wonder how long multiple superhero franchises per year will last. Will they burn out the genre? Analysts are already calling out the dead on this year's box office receipts...

Guess that means it gets the Mid-July slot.

No Branagh? UGH!
I REALLY wanted to see what he would do with the sequel.

This summer is also the most overcrowded in a long time. That has a lot to do with the numbers. It's not really a fair assessment when every week there is a new blockbuster coming out. It doesn't give them much time to see how it could have done if it had more breathing room. Not to mention Thor's international numbers are very, very good.

I loved the first, so I welcome a second as soon as possible.

The first one was pretty good...with the right director and writer on board, it could be good.

Yeah, what the hell? He did a pretty darn good job with the first film (minus the insanity with the Dutch Angles). He seemed really into it and he received much praise from most people. What's the deal? Did he not have a multi-picture deal?

Looking forward to a Thor sequel, but I really wish they would start keeping directors around. For continuity purposes, I think a change in director can be just as devastating as a change in lead actor.

+1

Iron Man and Thor are not only my favorite Marvel films, but my favorite superhero films, period. Getting sequels for both the same summer is bliss for me. Two years admittedly seems a bit tight, though, and I'm disappointed to hear Branagh won't be coming back to direct. Here's hoping they can get someone with similar storytelling sensibilities. Getting Shane Black for Iron Man 3 was a brilliant move. Let's see Marvel do the same for Thor 2. I wouldn't mind seeing someone like David Yates at the helm.

He was on Craig Ferguson a little after the film opened and said something like negotiations for the next film where going to be starting up I believe.

Guess it didn't work out if Deadline is correct

Edit: Deadline updated the story in the OP. July 26th, 2013.

Or Thor 2 could take place during The Avengers or even before Thor 1.

That is too bad. These movies seem to have a bit of a learning curve to them and Branagh had a pretty good grasp. Oh well. At least he will still be involved.
