Default Canada / US Blu-ray Differences and Comparisons

I couldn’t seem to find any sites or threads that have a list of all the US/ Canada Blu Rays that are different, making one inferior over the other, so I decided to start this one. It all started after buying a few Blu Ray discs only to find out that the Canadian (Or is some cases US) disc is missing a lossless audio track like their counterpart, or is in a different/ wrong aspect ratio, or is missing some extras, ect. I hope this thread can help others from making the same mistakes I have and wasting their money on inferior discs.

I have left off discs that are country specific exclusive discs as this is more of a comparison list. I have made a few exceptions to this rule though if the other country has a DVD out that has extra or different bonus material, as I know that is important to some people. I also left off packaging details like one country getting an exclusive slipcover or steelbook, as they are already covered on many other great threads.

PS If any of this info is inaccurate or you have some extra info that I am missing, please let me know! I have put this list together from my own discs/ experiences, back of cases (Which aren’t always that accurate!), reviews, ect. Because of this there may be a few mishaps.

Superior Canadian Releases

6 Souls (aka. Shelter) - US release is missing extras found on Canadian release (Cast and Crew Soundbites, B-Roll Selects).

13 - Canadian aspect ratio (2:40:1) is slightly closer to theatrical (2:39:1) then the US version (2:41:1). The Canadian release comes with some extras though (Interviews, Behind the Scenes, and Making Of) where as the US version is barebones.

Antiviral - The US release includes "Behind the Scenes" (12:46) missing from the Canadian release, in turn the Canadian release includes several featurettes missing from the US release (Manufacturing Celebrity, The Design of Antiviral, She's Perfect Somehow, Brandon Cronenberg on Antiviral, Thermal Camera Test Footage)

Arbitrage - US release has OAR slightly opened up to 1:78:1 instead of its proper 1:85:1 like the Canadian Blu.

Autopsy of Jane Doe, The - US release is missing the following extras: The Tunnel Short film, TIFF Midnight Madness Q&A, LA Premier Q&A festival Q&A, a short film, an interview with Emile Hirsch. The US release does include a few extra Trailers and TV Spots though.

The Avengers: Season 1 - Since there is no US Blu-ray for this set, the Canadian version is obviously the one to buy. That being said, the extras are a little different from the US DVD sets. The Canadian set loses previews of Season 2 and some trivia tracks. In its place it receives 12 min. of interviews with various cast and crew.

B itch Slap - US disc is only 1 disc as opposed to 2. It is missing the Deleted Scenes, B itch Slap 101 featurette, Promos, A Conversation with Mother Superior & Sister Batril, and Kinki's Guide to Sexual Harassment in the Workplace.

The Collection - American release has 2:34:1 while Canadian release has the theatrical aspect ratio 2:39:1.

Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope - Since there is no US release the Canadian Blu is the one to go with. It includes the same extras as the US DVD.

Dark Tide - Canadian release includes Deleted Scenes missing from the US release.

Downfall - Since the US doesn't even have a Bluray release, the Canadian version comes out on top. That being said, they differ in extras. The US DVD has a commentary by Director Oliver Hirschbiegel (In English) missing from the Canadian Blu, while the Canadian Blu includes an extra "Behind the Scenes Look with Director Oliver Hirschbiegel".

Dream House - The Canadian disc is missing the 2 min. EPK "A Look Inside" as well as the theatrical trailer. In return, it includes 12 min. of Interviews (Daniel Craig, Rachel Weiz, Naomi Watts, Jim Sheridan).

Fido – There still is no US Blu released, so in that regards Canada wins here. There are some minor differences in the extras though between the Canadian Blu and the US DVD. The Canadian Blu has an exclusive Art Gallery and a “Night of the Living” short. Unfortunately it is missing the 5 min. “The Making of Fido” featurette and the 2 min. Blooper Reel.

Fubar 2 – Canadian Blu features an extra 40 mins. of deleted scenes, an extra commentary with Terry and Deaner in character, and a Terry and Deaner Featurette.

It also includes the first movie on Blu as a bonus, which isn’t even out in the US yet. This disc includes a Filmmaker Commentary, Terry & Dean Commentary, 3 Music Videos [3:06] [3:56] [2:45], Deleted Scenes with Introductions [20:16] (7 Scenes in all, including 'The Package' short film), Trailers: Short [0:43] & Long [2:24], and an Unadvertised Soundtrack Spot [0:31].

The Ghost Writer - Canadian Blu includes the uncut International edit of the film, while the US release is the cut PG 13 version. I believe the length of the film is the same, but in the US version the swear words are dubbed over.

The Grey - Canadian Blu has a bunch of extra features. These include: 3 featurettes (Man vs. Nature, The Extremes, Once More Into Fray - 7.5 min.) 8 interviews with various cast and crew (14 min.), and 12 clips (Which are just scenes from the movie).

A Haunted House - Canadian release has a English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio track, while the US version has DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. The extras are also slightly different. The US release has a short 2 min. EPK "How to Survive a Paranormal Presence", while the Canadian release includes a Featurette as well as Behind the Scenes.

Intruders - Canadian Blu has better extras. US version has a 8 min. Featurette and a 20 min. Behind the Scenes. Canadian Blu includes Intruders - An Inside Look, The Making of Intruders, an Interview with Clive Owen, and Deleted Scenes.

The Killer Elite - The US release has an aspect ratio of 2:41:1, while the Canadian release comes in at 2:40:1. The original aspect ratio is in between at 2:39:1, so I would say it's really a preference here. The Canadian Blu includes some Interviews though so it's the better version to grab.

Lawless - US disc has been edited by a few seconds, compared to the Canadian versions which is uncut. The US release has a closer aspect ratio (2:39:1) to the theatrical presentation (2:40:1), where as the Canadian release is 2:35:1. This is a very minor difference though.

Love and Mercy - Canadian Blu has a 7.1 DTS-HD track as opposed to the 5.1 track found on the US release.

Mama - Canadian release includes a few eclusive extras. These include; Behind The Scenes (2:29), Interviews: Jessica Chastain - Annabel (4:56), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau - Lucas (4:36), Megan Charpentier & Isabelle Nelisse - Victoria & Lilly (1:44), Andy Muschietti - Writer/ Director (2:17), Barbara Muschietti - Writer/ Producer (1:14), J. Miles Dale - Producer (1:23), Guillermo Del Toro - Executive Producer (3:53).

Maps to the Stars - The US release is barebones, while the Canadian release includes a Commentary with Screenwriter Bruce Wagner, Interviews with Cast and Crew, Additional Cast and Crew Interviews, and On the Red Carpet.

Oldboy (2003) - The Oldboy found in the Canadian Vengeance trilogy has a lossless Korean DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track, where as the US Vengeance trilogy only contains a lossy Korean Dolby Digital 5.1 EX track. You CAN get the lossless track in the US though, if you buy the original stand alone release of Oldboy that includes most of the extras on a seperate DVD.

The Possession - The US release has an aspect ratio of 2:41:1, while the Canadian release comes in at 2:40:1. The original aspect ratio is in between at 2:39:1, so I would say it's really a preference here. Where the Canadian edition comes out on top is it is the uncut version of the film, where as the US disc only includes the R-rated theatrical cut.

The Punisher (2004) - There is a Canadian exclusive double feature with Punisher: War Zone, that includes a lossless audio track as opposed to the 2004 movie only edition in Canada and the US that only includes lossy tracks. Unfortunately all versions are missing the extras found on the DVDs, these includes: the Extended Cut of the film, Audio commentary by director Jonathan Hensleigh, "Keepin' It Real: The Punisher Stunts" - featurette (27:15), "War Journal: On The Set Of The Punisher" - featurette (29:30), "Army Of One: Punisher Origins" - featurette (12:55), "Drawing Blood Bradstreet Style" - featurette (6:10), Deleted Scenes: (2:52 / Optional commentary by director Jonathan Hensleigh), "Step Up" by 'Drowning Pool' - music video, "The Punisher" - video game trailer, "Kuwait" animated introduction (4:28), "Tour Of Duty: Making the Extended Cut" featurette (9:10), and "The Punisher comic book" Gallery (73 pages).

Rec/ Rec 2 – These films haven’t received a US Blu release, so if you want to watch them in hi def the Canadian Blus are the way to go. Comparing the extras to the US DVD releases though it looks as if the US Blus, shall they ever come, may include different extras.

The Rec 2 US DVD includes three featurettes not present on the Canadian Blu as well as a different and slightly longer behind the scenes featurette, while the Canadian Blu includes an extra interview gallery and deleted scenes for part 1 and an almost 2 hour making of for part 2 not found on the US DVDs.

Rec 3 - Not only did the US not get a Bluray release, but the DVD is also missing the "Making of Rec Genesis - Preparing a Bloody Wedding".

Red Hill – Canadian Blu has 10 min. of deleted scenes including a longer ending, 10 min. of storyboard comparisons, and a 30 min. documentary. US Blu is barebones.

Safe - Canadian Blu includes extra featurette, "Making of Safe".

Saint (Saint Nick) - Not only does US not have this movie on Blu Ray, but the DVD released by IFC is also missing the 22 min. documentary found on this disc. The US DVD does include its trailer though which isn't on the Canadian Blu.

The Samaritan - The US release has an aspect ratio of 2:40:1, while the Canadian release comes in at 2:35:1. The original aspect ratio is in between at 2:39:1, so I would say it's really a preference here. Where as the US release includes no extras though the Canadian release includes Interviews, Behind the Scenes, and a Featurette.

Screamers: The Hunting - This Blu-ray is a Canada exclusive. It is in its proper aspect ratio, has a 5.1 DTS HD audio track, and includes all of the extras the US DVD has, namely a Behind the Scenes featurette.

Splice - Canadian Blu includes a few extra features. These include: Behind the Scenes, Interview with Vincenzo Natali for Fangoria, and Teaser and Trailer.

Spring Breakers - Canadian release includes a few extra featurettes (Girls - 2:33, Boys - 1:48, Director Featurette 1 - 4:43, Director Featurette 2 - 4:33, Spring Breakdown 1 - 4:06, Spring Breakdown 2 - 4:25), but is missing the Theatrical Trailers and TV Spots found on the US Blu.

Step Up 4: Revolution - The Canadian Blu comes as a 3 disc set, 3D/2D/DVD, while the US set is only one disc with the 3D/2D together.

Sweet Hereafter - This Blu-ray is a Canada exclusive. It has an aspect ratio of 2:40:1 (Theatrical is 2:39:1), has a 5.1 DTS HD audio track, and includes all of the extras from the US DVD.

A Town Called Panic - Since there is no Blu Ray in the US for this film, Canada is the way to go. Should be noted though that the Blu Ray and U.S. DVD each include their own batch of extras, and its debatable who's are better. The Canadian Blu includes pre-production animatics, 18 deleted scenes, 5 line tests, and the original "A Town Called Panic" short film from 1991. The US DVD includes the 54 min. "La Fabrique De Panique" documentary, a shorter reel of deleted scenes, test shot comparisons, video interview clips with Aubier and Patar, "Obsessive Compulsive" short film, and the U.S. theatrical trailer.

Trespass - The US release has an aspect ratio of 2:41:1, while the Canadian release comes in at 2:35:1. The original aspect ratio is in between at 2:39:1, so I would say it's really a preference here. That being said, where as the US release only has one extra, Trespass: Inside the Thriller (5 min.), the Canadian release includes "The Making of Trespass", "Interviews with Cast and Crew", and "Behind the Scenes".

Twilight: Eclipse - US disc is a flipper disc, where as Canadian is single sided.

Valhalla Rising - The US only has a DVD release of this film which includes its' trailer which is missing from the Canadian release. The Canadian release instead includes a 23 min. documentary.

Vehicle 19 - Canadian release has closer aspect ratio (2:40:1) to theatrical presentation (2:39:1), where as the US aspect ratio is cropped to 1:78:1. Although, the Canadian release is missing theatrical trailer found on the US disc.

Inferior Canadian Releases

22 Bullets (L'immortel) - The Canadian release includes all of the same extras, plus a theatrical trailer. Unfortunately they are all in French and not subtitled.

Ain't Them Bodies Saints - The Canadian Blu-ray has Dolby TrueHD 5.1 instead of DTS-HD 5.1, and is missing all the extras present on the US Blu. This includes: Untitled Ross Brothers Documentary (13:22), Deleted Scenes (8:59), The Lights (3:32), Behind the Scenes (4:48), Trailer (2:29), Bob Muldoon Teaser (00:53), Ruth Guthrie Teaser (00:48), the feature length film St. Nick (1:24:44), and finally hidden as an Easter egg, some bloopers and outtakes (2:53).

The Awakening - The Canadian release is missing all of the extras from the US release including: Deleted Scenes with Introductions by Director Nick Murphy (SD, 28 minutes), A Time for Ghosts (HD, 25 minutes), Behind the Scenes (HD, 36 minutes), Extended Interview with Nick Murphy (HD, 19 minutes), Anatomy of a SCREAM (HD, 17 minutes), Anatomy of a Scene: Florence and the Lake. It does include some exclusive extras though, interviews with writer/director Nick Murphy and actors Rebecca Hall, Dominic West and Imelda Staunton.

The Babadook - Scream Factory in the US released released a Special Edition of this film that includes two extras that can not be found on any of the Canadian releases, these include Deleted Scenes and Jennifer Kent's Short Film "Monster".

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans – Missing lossless 5.1 audio track, OAR is slightly opened up to 1:78:1 from 1:85:1, photo gallery is about 8mins. shorter. It almost makes up for it though with an extra trailer, and 30 mins. of exclusive interviews.

The Bling Ring - Canadian release is missing several extras including: Behind the Real Bling Ring (23:46), Scene of the Crime with Paris Hilton (10:37) and the theatrical trailer (1:48).

Brooklyn’s Finest – In the wrong aspect ratio, 1:78:1 instead of 2:40:1. It is also missing the commentary found on the US disc.

Carlos - Canadian Blu put out by Mongrel Media is inferior to the Criterion release in every way. Criterion release includes a lossless DTS HD track over the 5.1 lossy track, better video, and way more extras. The Canadian release includes a couple exclusive extras including a 20 min. Interview with Olivier Assayas, a 5 min. Interview with Edgar Ramirez, and its' original French trailer. Criterion includes many exclusive extras including: Selected Scenes Commentary, 43 min. Interview with Olivier Assayas, 20 min. Interview with Edgar Ramirez, 14 min. Interview with Denis Lenoir, 59 min. documentary "Carlos: Terrorist Without Borders", 39 min. Interview with Hans-Joachim Klein, 89 min. documentary "Maison de France", and finally it includes the standard Criterion booklet. Keep in mind the Criterion release can be purchased in Canada as well.

Circle, The - Missing No More Secrets: Completing The Circle (1080p; 30:56), The Future Won't Wait: Design and Technology (1080p; 10:55), and A True Original: Remembering Bill Paxton (1080p; 13:53).

Centurion - Missing 7.1 DTS HD track, only has 5.1 DTS HD.

Che – Although the Criterion release is probably the way to go (It includes a commentary, deleted scenes, and hours of other extras) the Canadian release is still worth checking out for the 75 min. of exclusive extras. These include a 10 min. “Making Of…” featurette, 13-minute Steven Soderbergh interview, a 6 min. interview with Benicio Del Toro, a 12 min. interview with composer Alberto Iglesias and a 31 min. conversation with consultant Jon Lee Anderson author of ‘Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life‘. It also includes trailers for each part, where the Criterion edition only includes the one trailer. Keep in mind the Criterion release can be purchased in Canada as well.

Cleanskin – Has OAR slightly opened up to 2:35:1 instead of its proper 2:39:1 like the US Blu.

The Company Men - US release has OAR slightly opened up to 1:78:1 instead of its proper 1:85:1 like the Canadian Blu. This is so minor though it’s almost not worth mentioning. That being said, the US release has the better extras including an Audio Commentary with Writer/Director John Wells, Alternate Ending, Deleted Scenes, and Making The Company Men. The Canadian release only includes Interviews with the Cast and Crew, Behind the Scenes and a trailer.

Cosmopolis - Missing Theatrical Trailer.

The Crow - Missing Theatrical Trailer. It does come with a DVD with the original commentary with Producer Jeff Most and Screenwriter John Shirley though which almost makes up for it.

A Dangerous Method - Missing Audio Commentary with Director David Cronenberg, Making Of (8 min.), AFI's Harold Lloyd Master Seminar with David Cronenberg (31 min.), and trailer. It instead includes Cast and Crew Interviews and Production B-Roll (20 min.).

The Day - Includes a English DTS-HD MA 5.1 instead of a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track, and is also missing the Theatrical Trailer.

Dead Snow – Hard to confirm but it looks like the Canadian Blu may be missing some extras. Here’s what is has compared to the US Blu Ray. Ein Zwei Die: The Making Of Dead Snow, Special Effects’ Featurette, Make-Up’ Featurette, Cast & Crew At Sundance Featurette, Trailers.

The US Blu has Behind Dead Snow (SD, 18:39), Special Make-Up Effects of Dead Snow (SD, 6:30), Madness in the North! (SD, 48:56), Madness in the West! (SD, 17:50), VFX (SD, 3:19), Burning the Cabin (SD, 1:01), The Sounds of Dead Snow (SD, 5:42), Outtakes (SD, 2:03), Original Theatrical Trailer (SD, 2:36), Teaser Trailer (SD, 00:54).

Comparing them it looks like some of the extras may be the same just labeled a little differently. Either way it looks like the Canadian Blu is missing Behind Dead Snow (SD, 18:39), Burning the Cabin (SD, 1:01), The Sounds of Dead Snow (SD, 5:42), and Outtakes (SD, 2:03).

End of the Tour, The - Missing Audio Commentary with Director James Ponsoldt, Writer Donald Margulies and Actor Jason Segel, Behind the Tour (1080p; 24:41), and A Conversation with Composer Danny Elfman (1080p; 8:24).

Five Minutes of Heaven - Canadian releases is missing DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, instead only including a lossy 5.1 track. It is also missing the 5 min. Behind the Scenes featurette and trailer.

Four Christmases – Has OAR slightly opened up to 1:75:1 instead of its proper 1:85:1 like the US Blu.

Friends with Kids - Canadian release is missing a few extras including, Ad-libs and Bloopers (12 min.), Scene 42: Anatomy of a Gag (5 min.) with optional commentary by Westfeldt, Hamm and Rexer, and MJ Rocks at Video Games (4 min.) with optional commentary by Westfeldt, Hamm and Rexer.

Only God Forgives - Missing the "The Music of Only God Forgives with Cliff Martinez" (9:10) featurette.

Gnomeo and Juliet (2D and 3D Version) - Has OAR slightly opened up to 1:78:1 instead of its proper 1:85:1 like the US Blu. Following extras are not on Blu-ray, instead only found on included DVD: three featurettes (Elton Builds a Garden, Frog Talk with Ashley Jensen, The Fawn of Darkness) and the Crocodile Rock music video.

The Good, The Bad, The Weird – Only has SDH subs, where as US release contains proper subs and SDH subs.

Hatchet 3 - The US release has a slightly closer aspect ratio (2:40:1) to the original theatrical aspect ratio (2:39:1) than the Canadian release (2:35:1). This is so minor though it's barely worth mentioning. The US release also has a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track while the Canadian release has Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track. This is really a preference thing I guess and probably again very minor if any difference.

Hit and Run - Missing three short featurettes: Street Legal (2 min.), Run and Gun (3 min.), and Love on the Run (3 min.).

The Hunter - Missing the Audio Commentary with Director Daniel Nettheim and producer Vincent Sheehan, the Deleted Scenes and the Trailer.

The Iceman – Has OAR slightly opened up to 1:78:1 instead of its proper 1:85:1 like the US Blu.

Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus – Has OAR slightly opened up to 1:78:1 instead of its proper 1:85:1 like the US Blu.

In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale - The Canadian release is very lacking compared to the superior US release. Ironclad: Battle for Blood - Canadian disc includes a lossy 5.1 Dolby Digital track, while the US Blu includes a 5.1 DTS HD track. It is also missing the Behind the Blood featurette (15:04) and theatrical trailer (1:30) found on the US Blu.

I Sell the Dead – Missing Theatrical Trailer and comic book. As well, the Canadian aspect ratio is 1:78:1 while the US release is 2:35:1, closer to the original aspect ratio 2:39:1.

It Follows - Missing Theatrical Trailer. It also has its' OAR slightly opened up to 2:35:1 instead of its proper 2:39:1 like the US Blu.

Killer Joe - Missing the commentary by Director William Friedkin, Southern Fried Hospitality: From Stage to Screen (26 min.), SXSW Q&A with Cast (39 min.), SXSW Intro by William Friedkin (4 min.), and "White Trash" redband trailer. Also, the Canadian disc only has a English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track, while the US release has a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track.

Last Days on Mars - Missing The Making of The Last Days on Mars (15:17), Analyzing the Visual Effects (6:00), Behind the Scenes Comparisons (4:01), and AXIS TV: A Look at The Last Days on Mars (3:11).

Law Abiding Citizen – Canadian Theatrical and Unrated Blus released separately, unlike the US edition which is a 2 disc set. Commentary is unfortunately only included with the Theatrical disc.

Life of Crime - Missing Audio Commentary with Director Daniel Schechter and Actor Will Forte, Behind the Scenes of Life of Crime (1080p; 10:06), Envisioning the Big Picture: Shooting Crime (1080p; 9:16), Hit and Run: Choreographing Mayhem (1080p; 6:30), Deleted Scenes (1080p; 10:20). Also, the Canadian disc only has a English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track while the US release has a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, and it's aspect ratio is 2:35:1 while the US release is 2:38:1, closer to the original aspect ratio 2:39:1.

Lockout - Missing Unrated cut of film as well as the two featurettes on the film.

London Has Fallen - US disc has DTS:X + DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 tracks, while the Canadian disc only has a English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track. Their aspect ratios also slightly differ with the Canadian disc having a 2:35:1 ratio, while the US disc is 2:40:1. The theatrical aspect ratio is somewhere in between at 2:39:1, although this is a very minor difference.

Lovely Molly - Missing Commentary with Director/Co-Writer Eduardo Sánchez and Co-Writer Jamie Nash

Maniac – Has OAR slightly opened up to 2:35:1 instead of its proper 2:39:1 like the US Blu. This is so minor though it’s almost not worth mentioning.

Moonrise Kingdom – Has OAR slightly opened up to 1:78:1 instead of its proper 1:85:1 like the US Blu. This is so minor though it’s almost not worth mentioning.

Mother's Day (Remake) - Both releases have slightly different different audio tracks. The Canadian release has a DTS-HD MA 5.1 track while the US release has a Dolby TrueHD 5.1. The US version is the superior release though, as it includes a commentary track with Director Darren Lynn Bousman and Actor Shawn Ashmore, where as the Canadian release is barebones.

Mud - Canadian release only has a "Making Of" featurette and "Cast and Crew Interviews" as extras. Missing from the US release: Director's Commentary, A Personal Tale (11:37), The Arkansas Ensemble (7:11), Southern Authenticity (6:14), and The Snake Pit (1:30).

November Man - Missing Theatrical Trailer. Also, the Canadian disc only has a English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track while the US release has a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, and it's aspect ratio is 2:35:1 while the US release has the original 2:39:1 aspect ratio.

Nowhere Boy - The Canadian release is missing: Deleted Scenes"(3:55), The Making of 'Nowhere Boy' (7:46), and Nowhere Boy: The Creation of John Lennon and The Beatles (13:10). Instead it includes a Behind the Scenes featurette (8:21) and the Theatrical Trailer.

Ong Bak 3 - Canadian release is missing Ong Bak 3: Making of a Legend (15min.), Behind the Scenes: Uncovering the Action (6 min.), and HDNet: A Look at Ong Bak 3 (3 min.). As well, the Cast and Crew Interviews are almost 4 min. shorter. In return the Canadian disc has 14.5 min. of B roll footage, and a longer trailer.

Outpost 3: Rise of the Spetsnaz - Missing Theatrical Trailer

Parker - Canadian release is missing the "Who is Parker?" featurette (HD, 2:32).

Pina - Canadian release from Mongrel is missing many of the extras from the Mongrel release. These include an Audio commentary featuring Wenders, Behind-the-scenes footage, Interview with Wenders, and a booklet. Not sure is the transfer is inferior, or if the Making Of and Deleted Scenes (These are 3D on the Criterion Edition) are the same. Keep in mind the Criterion release can be purchased in Canada as well.

Pompeii - Canadian disc includes both 2D and 3D versions of the film on one disc, instead of each receiving their own discs like the US release. It is also missing the commentary with Producer/Director Paul W. S. Anderson and Producer Jeremy Bolt.

The Raid: Redemption - Canadian release is missing the audio commentary and original audio track.

Red Lights - Canadian release is missing various extras including, Cast Interviews (11 min.), Director's Interview (6 min.), Behind the Scenes (2 min.) and Trailer.

Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D - Has lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 track, where as the US has a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. Strangely the Canadian release does include a French DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track.

Rum Diary - The Canadian release is missing the 12 min. "A Voice Made of Ink and Rage: Inside The Rum Diary", as well as the 45 min. "The Rum Diary Back-Story". Instead it includes 25 min. of cast and crew promotional interviews, and some unedited b-roll.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World - Canadian release is missing Feature Commentary with Writer/Director Lorene Scafaria, Director's Mother Gail Scafaria, Producer Joy Gorman and Actors Patton Oswalt and Adam Brody.

Sharknado 2: The Second One - Canadian Blu has the trailer missing from the US release, but in turn is missing the deleted scenes (Other then the 0:18 Rob Ford scene), as well as both commentaries with the cast and crew.

Shaun the Sheep - Canadian release has an aspect ratio of 2:35:1, where as the US release is much closer to the 1:85:1 OAR with an aspect ratio of 1:78:1. The Canadian release is also missing the following extras: Meet the Characters (3:57), Join Shaun Behind the Scenes (2:30), Meet the Crew (3:05), and the Parody Poster Gallery.

Solitary Man - Canadian release is missing all the extras which include a Commentary with Writer/Director Brian Koppelman, Director David Levien, and Actor Douglas McGrath, "Solitary Man:' Alone in a Crowd" (12 min.) and its' theatrical trailer.

Stake Land – Has OAR slightly opened up to 2:35:1 instead of its proper 2:39:1 like the US Blu. This is so minor though it’s almost not worth mentioning.

Stonehearst Asylum - Canadian Blu is missing the Making of featurette. The US disc also has a slightly closer aspect ratio (2:40:1) to the original theatrical aspect ratio (2:39:1) than the Canadian release (2:35:1). This is so minor though it's barely worth mentioning.

Suck – Seems to be in the wrong aspect ratio 1:78:1 instead of 1:85:1. It also seems to be missing the Commentary by Stefaniuk and DP Hagey, the Flesh and Bone Music Video, and the Theatrical Trailer found on the US Blu.

Texas Chainsaw 3D - Canadian release has a English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio track while the US release has a DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1.

To the Wonder - Canadian release includes English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 where as the US release includes DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. The major difference though is that the Canadian release in missing a few featurettes, namely The Actors' Experience (5:54), The Ballet (5:59), Local Flavor (4:55), and the Theatrical Trailer (1:59).

Transsiberian - Canadian release has the wrong aspect ratio, 1:78:1 instead of 2:35:1 that the US version has (Original Aspect Ratio is 2:39:1). It is also missing the 34 min. Making of Featurette found on the US disc.

Vanishing on 7th Street – Canadian Blu is missing the Commentary, Alternate Endings, Revealing the Vanishing on 7th Street featurette, Creating the Mood on 7th Street featurette, Behind the Scenes Montage, HDNet: A Look at Vanishing on 7th Street, and Theatrical Trailer.

V/H/S Viral - Missing numerous extras including the commentary with the directors.

The Wrestler – Missing the 42 min. “Within the Ring” documentary. Movie is possibly 4 mins. Longer?

Wrymwood: Road of the Dead - Canadian disc is missing lossless 7.1 track, instead only including a lossy 5.1 track. It is also missing several extras including: Wyrmdiaries: The Behind the Scenes of Wyrmwood (49:29), 7-minute Teaser Scene (8:14), and the Theatrical Trailers (4:23).

Equal but Different Canada/ US Releases

Animal Kingdom - Both releases have a commentary, over hour long documentary and trailer. US Blu-Ray has an extra 33 min. Q&A with Director David Michôd and Actors Jacki Weaver and James Frenchville, while the Canadian Blu instead has 18 min. of interviews with various cast and crew, as well as a short 3 min. behind the scenes featurette.

Antichrist – I believe this is the same as the Criterion release minus the fancy packaging and essay booklet.

Blade Trinity - Canada has the same release as the US in the trilogy box set, which includes the unrated cut of the film and lots of extras. Alliance previously released a barebones version though which is the only way to get the theatrical cut of the film. The DVD included both cuts and all the extras.

Boyhood - Although similarity named, the extras are actually completely different across the two releases. The 12 Year Project Making Of Featurette is 16min. on the Canadian disc, compared to 19 min. on the US disc. They also have two completely different Q and A extras. The US disc has a live Q and A (53 min.) recorded after a screening of the film, where as the Canadian disc includes various interviews with the cast over the 12 years making the film (54 min.). These seem to be extended interviews from the Making Of Featurette. Finally, the Canadian disc contains an extra interview with Ethan Hawke, recorded in Toronto, Canada on Sept. 10, 2014 (8 min.).

Bunraku - Both releases offer different extras with the Canadian release including "Behind the Scenes" and "Interviews with the Cast and Crew" while the US release includes a Commentary by Director Guy Moshe and Actor Kevin McKidd.

Colossal - US release has deleted scene as extra, Canadian Disc includes an extra cut of the film with deleted scene inserted into the film.

Cop Land - Canada has the same release as the US which includes the Director's cut of the film and lots of extras. Alliance previously released a barebones version though which is the only way to get the theatrical cut of the film.

DOA: Dead or Alive - Canadian release has a lossless DTS HD track while the US release only has a lossy 5.1 audio track. Unfortunately there is no perfect release as the Canadian release is missing the extras found on the US release, these include a featurette entitled East Meets West (11 min.), Deleted Scenes (6 min.), and the Theatrical Trailer.

Dracula 2000 - Canaidan release has OAR of 2:39:1, where as US release has been opened up to 1:78:1. The US release does include the Audio commentary with director Patrick Lussier and writer Joel Soisson though. Unfortunately they are all missing the following DVD extras: 4x Deleted Scenes (Optional commentary by director/writer/editor Patrick Lussier and producer/writer Joel Soisson), 3x Extended Scenes (Optional commentary by director/writer/editor Patrick Lussier and producer/writer Joel Soisson), "Behind The Scenes" - featurette
Auditions (Gerard Butler, Colleen Fitzpatrick, Justine Waddell), 8 Storyboards, and the Theatrical Trailer.

Dragon Tattoo Trilogy - If you go by the single disc releases, the Canadian Blus easily trump the US discs.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – Canadian disc includes an extra interview with Producer Soren Staermose (12 mins.). The re-release also includes a new Swedish: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track.

The Girl Who Played with Fire – The Canadian Blu includes a few exclusive extras. Short interviews with several cast and crew (15 min.) and a short featurette on choreographing a fight scene in the film between the Neidermann and Roberto characters (10 min.). Strangely though it is missing its' trailer which is found on the US disc, and is the only film in the trilogy to be missing such. The re-release also includes a new Swedish: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track.

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest – The Canadian Blu contains two extras missing from the US Blu, an interview with Noomi Rapace and an interview with Michael Nyqvist. The re-release also includes a new Swedish: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track.

If you buy the US Trilogy box set though, it comes with an extra fourth disc that includes everything that was missing from the Canadian Blus (Although the interview with Producer Soren Staermose from the first movie is still strangely absent) and an extra 50 min. doc. titled Millennium: The Story which is a biography on the author of the books Stieg Larsson. It is still missing the lossless Swedish tracks though.

Enemy - The US release includes "Lucid Dreams: The Making of Enemy" (17 min.) , while the Canadian release has several smaller press featurettes - Adapting Saramago (4 min.), The Double (4 min.), The Web of His Mind (4.5 min.), Women of Enemy (3 min.).

Free Fire - The US release includes an exclusive commentary with Director Ben Wheatley, Cillian Murphy and Jack Reynor, while the Canadian release includes exclusive B-Roll footage.

Gone - The US release has an aspect ratio of 2:40:1, while the Canadian release comes in at 2:35:1. The original aspect ratio is in between at 2:39:1, so I would say it's really a preference here.

Harry Brown - Canadian Blu is missing commentary, but in turn has 40 min. of interviews and its’ trailer.

Heartless – There is no US Blu Ray for this, but the Canadian Blu is missing several extras from the US DVD. These include: Commentary, Behind the Scenes featurette, BIFA Awards featurette, Audience Reactions, 2 Music Videos, and 2 Trailers. Obviously if you only care about video and audio then the Canadian Blu is still the way to go, but if you care about extras you may want to wait for the eventual US Blu.

Henry's Crime - The US release has an aspect ratio of 2:40:1, while the Canadian release comes in at 2:35:1. The original aspect ratio is in between at 2:39:1, so I would say it's really a preference here.

Hesher - The US release has an aspect ratio of 2:44:1, while the Canadian release comes in at 2:35:1. The original aspect ratio is in between at 2:39:1, so I would say it's really a preference here.

The Horde – Since there is no US release technically the Canadian disc is the way to go. On the other hand if you care about extras, you may want to wait for the eventual US release as this Blu is missing from the US DVD: 8 min. Alternate Opening, 8 min. Short Film “Rivoallan”, and the US and French trailer.

Horns - Canadian release has English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 instead of DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. Aspect ratio is 2.35:1 instead of 2:39:1, which is the original theatrical ratio. Finally, the Canadian release has the following extras: Behind the Scenes, From Novel to Screen, The Director, and Becoming the Devil, where as the US release just has the one The Making of 'Horns' (18:48).

Ironclad - The US release has an aspect ratio of 2:40:1, while the Canadian release comes in at 2:35:1. The original aspect ratio is in between at 2:39:1, so I would say it's really a preference here.

Leaves of Grass - The Canadian Bluray is slightly opened up at 1:78:1 instead of the proper 1:85:1. It also differs where the extras are concerned, including Interviews (11 min.) and Behind the Scenes (5 min.) but is in turn missing the Trailer and Audio Commentary with Norton & Nelson found on the US release.

Machete Kills - The US disc has a 5.1 DTS HD track, while the Canadian disc has a 5.1 Dolby True HD track. As well, they both include the deleted scenes (20 min.), but where as the US disc has one long featurette "Making Machete Kills" (20 min.), the Canadian disc instead has three smaller featurettes "If Looks Could Kill" (2 min.), "Behind the Scenes" (4 min.), and "Making Machete Kills" (12 min.). I'm not sure if this is the same info just split up, or if they are completely different. The Canadian featurettes add up to be slightly shorter, but this could be due to several different reasons.

Pulse - Both releases have a slightly different aspect ratio, both different from the 2:39:1 original theatrical ratio. US release is 2:40:1, while Canadian release is opened up a little at 2:35:1.

The Raid 2 - The Canadian disc includes the uncut version of the film, while the US release is cut. This only equeates to a few seconds total (Several frames throughout the film). The US Blu-ray does include the theatrical trailer though, which is missing from the Canadian release.

The Raven - Canadian Blu has Dolby 5.1 True HD while the US disc has DTS HD 5.1.

Saw 1-3 - There was a trilogy released in Canada that includes lossless 5.1 DTS-HD MA audio on all three films, unlike the lossy audio found on the single move releases. They are also encoded in AVC format, while the US releases are encoded MPEG-2. However, there are no extras of any kind on this triple feature set and the movies are the theatrical versions rather than the "uncut" versions.

Silent House – Canadian release has OAR slightly opened up to 1:78:1 instead of its proper 1:85:1 like the US Blu. This is so minor though it’s almost not worth mentioning. As well, it is missing the commentary with co-directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, instead including Interviews and an On Set featurette.

Survivor - Canadian release has a lossless Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio track, where as the US only has a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1. The US release on the other hand has the correct aspect ratio of 2:39:1 (The Canadian release is slightly off at 2:35:1), and has deleted scenes and the theatrical trailer not found on the Canadian Blu.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning - Canada has the same release as the US, which includes the theatrical cut of the film, as well as all the extras. Alliance previously released a barebones version though which is the only way to get the unrated version of the film, though it is in 1080i.

Town That Dreaded Sundown, The (2014) - US release has 5.1 DTS HD track, while Canadian release has lossy track. Canadian release makes up for it though with several exclusive extras including interviews with Addison Timlin, Veronica Cartwright, Gary Cole, Joshua Leonard, Anthony Anderson, Spencer Treat Clark, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, and Jason Blum. The US does include the theatrical trailer though missing from the Canadian release.

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning - Canadian version includes the uncut version of the film, where as the US version is only the R-rated cut. They also differ in extras with the US coming out on top with a commentary with Director John Hyams and Actor Dolph Lundgren, and an 80 min. doc. "Days of Reckoning: The Making of US4". The Canadian version only includes "Interviews with the Director and Actors".

White Noise/ White Noise 2 – Again since there is no US Blu’s out there for these releases technically they are the best route to go. Though there are a few things that should be noted. These are only 1080i, part 1 is missing the deleted scenes that were on the US DVD, and I’ve heard that the second film’s audio goes out of sync.

I deleted Perfect Storm off the list as even though the back of the Canadian Blu states it only has a 5.1 EX mix, the disc actually does include the 5.1 Tru HD track that the US disc has.

I also added Ong Bak 3 to the list since the Canadian Blu is missing quite a few extras, but in return has some b-roll footage and a longer trailer.

Fanboys has the extras. A new version came out in Canada the same time Fanboys was released in the US which includes all the extras.

Thanks, I added DOA to the "Equal but Different Canada/ US Releases" list though since it has the better audio option but is also missing all of the extras from the US release.

Outlander was actually re-released with the same OAR as the US release, and like zeze mentioned, Fanboys was also re-released as a Special Edition with all the same extras as the US release, so I left those off.

When it comes to commentaries and different special features, or TrueHD vs DTS HD MA I agree, but the Lossless audio over lossy should place DOA as superior I think. I for one would not think of looking for it under equal..

You are right, the presentation of the film is probably the most important part to most people, but there are some (Especially those without surround sound) that would rather take the extras. Personally as a completest I would need both, that's why I put it under the equal heading. Each version offers something over the other. There is really no right or wrong answer, it's really a preference. Either way, it's on the thread now and that's the most important part. As long as someone buying it can see what they are or are not getting, that's really all that matters. The headings don't mean too much really.

Just head over to the slipcover trading thread and get the US slip to put over your bilingual Ghostwriter. I wish I had done just that instead of selling my CDN copy and buying a whole new US copy. I didn't know about the PG dubbing!

To be honest I know nothing about UK discs, as I have stuck to only buying North American so I don't know if I would be the best person to do that. Not that I have anything against UK discs, seems like a lot of their discs are better, just personally never went that way.

Also, I stuck to US/ Canada as their discs are 99% the same except for the few listed in this thread. That's what makes it confusing and surprising when you find out the discs are different. I think adding UK to the list would be quite exhaustive as so many of their discs are different.

If anyone wants to take the info I have listed and start another thread comparing UK discs, I would not be insulted though!

**** all this missing extras bullshit. The main concern should be picture quality. as long as the Canadian releases have the same or better pq then that's what should count the most.

imo.

Here is some information about DOA: Dead or Alive.

Alliance released a barebones version of this film on Feb 3, 2009.

On Aug 17, 2010, a version of the film was released in the USA with extras. On the same day, Alliance re-released this blu-ray in Canada. This version is identical to the USA version of the blu-ray. This release can easily be identified. Look for the words "special edition" on the front cover of the blu-ray. Currently this is the only version in print.

Thanks a lot for this list!

Will be very useful in the future, too bad I already got Gnomeo & Juliet, Blu-ray only edition from a video store...

How about all the Alliance "Movie only" Blu-rays, like Rounders, the Screams, etc. But From Dusk Till Dawn seems to be a slightly superior over the US edition.

The individual Scream releases from Alliance (Canada. are identical to the Lionsgate (US) releases.

The Alliance release of From Dusk Till Dawn is a far superior version than the Echo Bridge release.
