I thought it might be a FANTASTIC idea to create an integrated Criterion Collection wishlist thread. I will let Jon Mulvaney at Criterion know of it. Perhaps we can shape the course of future Criterion history by letting the company know which titles we want to see the most. Mod, can you stick this thread to the top if it sounds like a great idea to you as well?
PROPOSED RULES 1. Propose DIRECTORS LAST NAME along with title in QUOTATION MARKS Please list Director first than title second in quotation marks so I can cut and paste your suggestion quickly into the list below. 2. Propose titles only that, objectively speaking, Criterion could logically release Mainstream releases like Bram Stoker's Dracula, though they were with the collection in the past on laserdisc, are not likely to get Criterion releases because, as films, they are too huge in the modern home theater era to justify licensing to Criterion at rates the company would want to pay (exceptions of course exist, like with Benjamin Button, but lets keep this simple because it seems certain the studio approaches Criterion with those titles, not the other way around). 3. If you ALSO WANT a PREVIOUSLY NOMINATED TITLE BELOW please GIVE A PLUS ONE to that title I want to log the popularity of each title to join the Criterion Collection amongst the fans for Jon Mulvaney's convenience. Thus, if you want Song of the South as well to join the collection, please post in your reply post in this thread "Song of the South +1". A "plus one" to all titles or cutting and pasting the below list will be ignored. Give plus ones individually based on your own preferences. 4. Keep out any JOKE title suggestions Though it is classic legend over at DVDTalk and in other places to suggest a Nickelodeon Trilogy release of Good Burger, Harriet the Spy, and Rugrats, lets keep it serious so that Jon can take these suggestions to the powers that be and possibly get us one or more of the releases we want. Not that Id object to these releases mind you..haha...but lets keep it serious folks. I will ask the mod to delete any obvious joke title suggestions to keep the seriousness and functionality of the thread intact. As a general rule of guidance, its a joke title suggestion if the film has no or little obvious critical acclaim. 5. Keep in mind that Criterion is a BUSINESS If the title would be too expensive to acquire in anyone's eyes if Criterion had to ask for the film to be licensed rather than the other way around, please don't suggest it. This sort of relates to rule #1 but its included for completeness to save Jon Mulvaney's time. A good possible example of this might be for them to ask to acquire the rights to release Lawrence of Arabia. Not gonna happen unless Sony/Columbia Pictures comes to Criterion of its own volition. Any suggestion for it or a title of the same magnitude would probably be pointless to Jon Mulvaney. 6. Avoid suggesting OUT OF PRINT past Criterion Blu Ray Releases Obviously if Criterion can get back the rights to past blu ray releases of theirs now out of print (The Man Who Fell to Earth, The Third Man, et al.) in a finically feasible fashion one would think they will do so at that time. They did so with "The 400 Blows" and "Salo" on the DVD side of things. Suggesting out of print DVD Criterion releases seems fine, however, presuming it doesnt fall victim to any of the above rules (i.e., John Woo's "The Killer" and "Hard Boiled" would seem to be a good suggestion since the Dragon Release Dynasty releases are terrible and presumably low-rent but "This is Spinal Tap" wouldn't be a good one for reasons 1 and 3) DESIRED RESULTS I will then go ahead and update this thread on a regular basis to reflect the selections and the votes for each. +1's will be added accordingly for each vote getter. Hopefully at some point the mod would take over this process to make it more official and because I might get too busy to keep this list current. Ultimately, hopefully as many of the titles as possible on this list either become reality from scratch or become accelerated into reality from drawing board status due to our collective fan demand. If a title becomes announced, I will put that title in italics and add next to it the announced release date. UNANNOUNCED CRITERION BLU RAY RELEASES WANTED (Listed in Alphabetical Order Below by Director then by Title) Altman's "The Player" Anderson's "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" +1 Anderson's "The Royal Tennenbaums" +1 Anderson's "Rushmore" +1 November 22, 2011 Aronofsky's "The Fountain" Baumbach's Squid and the Whale +1 Browning's "Freaks" Clark's "Kids" Disney's "Song of the South" Fincher's "The Game" Friedkin's "Sorcerer" Gilliam's "Brazil" Hill's "Spider Baby" Kassovitz' "La Haine" Levinson's "Diner" Lynch's "Blue Velvet" Malick's "Badlands" Monger's "The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain" Mungia's "Six String Samurai" Pasolini's Trilogy of Life: "The Decameron", "The Canterbury Tales", and "The Arabian Nights" Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby" +2 Reed's "Odd Man Out" Reggio's "Koyaanisqatsi" Riefenstahl's "Olympia: Pts 1 & 2" Rudolph's "The Moderns" Sirk's "Magnificent Obsession" Troel's "The Emigrants" Welles' "The Magnificent Ambersons" Wellman's "Wings" Wenders' "Until the End of the World" Woo's "Hard Boiled" Woo's "The Killer" Last edited by indiansbsa; 08-16-2011 at 10:40 AM. |

I propose that Criterion acquire the rights to and subsequently release the following two collections/titles on blu ray:
1. Pier Paolo Pasolini's The Trilogy of Life: The Decameron, The Canterbury Tales, The Arabian Nights- I believe they may already have the rights to this as it was an Image entertainment DVD release previously. With Salo coming in October, it seems like now would be an amazing time to tie-in these to Salo's impending release. 2. Walt Disney's: The Song of the South- with the proper historical context and kept as a small art house release from Criterion, this release could truly revolutionize the collection and, yet, keep this title from alienating the NAACP or any of the other groups that Bob Iger et al are worried about offending. 3. David Fincher's The Game- This one has been rumored for nearly forever. Time to get it done. Last edited by indiansbsa; 07-17-2011 at 03:57 PM. |

Apparently Godfrey Reggio's Koyaanisqatsi (or even a Qatsi trilogy) has been in the works for a while, but I've only heard whispers now and then. The first is my favorite film, so seeing a fully featured Criterion blu is a dream.

THE MODERNS (1988) Director Alan Rudolph. I've been wanting this title on Blu ray since the format started. With the success of Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, now would be a perfect time to have Criterion visit this companion piece for it.
