Default A Good, Reasonably Priced Blu-ray Player?

I'm looking for a good blu-ray player from a reliable brand (like Sony or Panasonic).
  • I don't have a home theather system yet
  • I don't need 3D
  • I'm only hooking it up to a 1080p HDTV
  • I need it to have the best 1080p quality for a reasonable price
  • Anywhere from $100-175

Thanks .

if you could give us a price range that would make things much easier.

a reasonable price to others may be too expensive for you.

just remember, you get what you pay for. especially with electronics.

If you have access to Costco, they have Panasonic BD player on sale for $89, also Sony BD players for cheap, Sony 3D for $159, and other brands as well

I updated my OP. I don't need anything fancy in the sound department, not yet anyway. I just need it to have PQ as good or better than a PS3, which is the last blu-ray player i had.

if the panasonics are as good as their tvs, then i'd suggest one of those. i've never watched anything on a panasonic blu-ray player, but i've heard some good things about them. of course don't just take my word. let others post their opinions before you run out and pick something up.

the sonys seem to be well received, as well.

I'm thinking of getting one of these:
  • Sony BDP-S580
  • Panasonic DMP-BDT210
  • Panasonic DMP-BDT310

Anyone have a suggestion?

The Panasonics are all very good players from all reports I've read. The simple differences are: 110 wired, 210 WiFi, 310 WiFi, dual HDMIs. Same PQ. Also Touch Free Sensor on the 210 and 310. I have had the 110 for a month or so and it's a very, very good player. Loads fast and the PQ (connected to 42ST30 1080p panny plasma) is great, especially impressed with dvd upscaling. Really, really nice. I would check to see how the apps (Netflix, etc.) work on the Panny players since I don't use them.

I haven't used a Panasonic player in a couple of years, so I can't comment on those at all, except I'll try to get one to see. However, the Sony 580 has a lot of features, but has horrible color decoding and gamma, and is a big step down from the 570 in terms of build quality and features as well. If I was buying a player for myself, I'd by the Samsung BD-D5500, as it's been the best performing of all the players I've tested this year, and Costco carries it for a decent price (around $160 I believe).
