Default Halloween PQ

I guess Bracke didn't care for the PQ since it only got 1.5 stars. I was looking forward to this one too.

EDIT: I've seen the light thanks to the responses. I'm ignoring his review and buying it anyway.

Default Everyone loves Halloween 'cept HDDigest?

I don't get it...EVERY review I've read so far of the BD Halloween raves about the picture and, for the most part, the audio. Why then does Bracke give it such an incredibly low rating? Is he watching the same BD as everyone else?

Personally, I like the new transfer better. It looks much more realistic and creepy. It looks like if you were walking down the street at night. The THX version is way to blue. Glad they used the less blue version for... Blu-Ray! AHA!!! I made a funny... I appologize for that outburst everyone, I am sorry.

He hated the fact that they totally altered the colo palette from Carpenter & Cundey's (photography director) intent. They change dthe stylistic interpreatation of the movie.

Bracke bends over for Toshiba and their HD-DVD cohorts

I suggest everyone not waste their time with Blu-ray reviews from High Def Crap Fest. Peter Bracke likes only VC-1.

I posted my review at my site, and my Anchor Bay rep wrote me back and thanked me for the link. He then told me that someone at the HDD forum had made a big stink about the color correction of the transfer and that a bunch of folks over there were all up in arms about it. The thing is, the guy who made the comments is actually the owner of a smallish distributor who plans on releasing three of his titles on HD-DVD! Sounds like a bit of gamesmanship to me

Maybe it isn't a big deal to you, but they really shouldn't have done it that way. I'm not sure I agree with him on 1.5 * for PQ, but how can you put out a blu-ray version that the people who created the movie blatantly disagree with?

Listen I've bought BDs that Bracke didn't like and will do so again... Bram Stoker's Dracula comes to mind. Read his stuff and make your own decision. But why deny the guy his point of view, especially when it is totally valid?

It's definitely a must buy for me.

Quotes from other reviews:

Quote:
My dreams have come true. This is the BEST I’ve ever seen Halloween in my home. What I see here is the clean and pristine image quality of the 25th Anniversary Edition with the colour timing very close to the previous DVDs. The result is nothing short of spectacular. You will be amazed at the opening titles – the black level is deep and noise free, titles are defined sharply against the background without any artificial enhancement. As the film progresses to the steady cam view of Michael’s murder of his sister, you will notice ample depth to the image with outside views of the house, and details in the interiors through the window. It’s quite amazing.
Quote:
re-released it in 2003 in a "25th Anniversary Edition," which featured a slightly improved image, but inexplicably changed the color scheme. Most noticeably, the blue tint that made the nighttime scenes so moody was gone. This caused an uproar among fans, and there was worry that when this Blu-ray was released, that it too would contain the incorrectly color-timed transfer.

In response to these worries, Anchor Bay announced they would in fact be using the older transfer approved by Cundey. And at a first glance, they seem to be telling the truth. The nighttime scenes have a bluish tint to them, and the daytime scenes look like Fall in Illinois. But this 2.35:1 AVC-encoded 1080p transfer does not seem to have the same color levels as the 1999 transfer. The nighttime scenes, while blue, are not nearly as bathed in blue light as they were before, although the daytime scenes get very close to how they used to look. It's not as bad as the Divimax, but it's not quite where Cundey and Carpenter wanted it to be. However, that being said, it's still the best Halloween has ever looked on home video.
Quote:
Halloween is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen. Wow. I've seen this movie in theaters, on VHS, on cable, and on DVD, but it has never looked this incredible. This looks like a brand new movie from top to bottom, with a print that beyond pristine, free from even minor signs of age or damage. This is so clean, but the image doesn't look overprocessed, as detail remains very high and the visuals look natural. The image is crystal clear and so refined, even the smallest of visual details stand out. I could not believe how good this movie looks, fans will be thrilled, to say the least. I don't care how many different versions of Halloween you've owned, this is now the only release that matters.

Dave Mack should have put up more pictures to compare the Divimax. It seems like on the one shot that the Divimax was provided, the Blu-ray and Cundy version come pretty close to each other.

That would be sad if it's true. It's hard to trust anyone these days.

Still I don't deny the guy his right to have his opinion and the issue of "color shifting" could have been avoided if they had gotten Carpenter's input on the matter.
