Default Not so smug anymore.

Picked up Underworld today at BB at 12 noon. Only two copies left when I picked mine up. One left on the shelf. I'm in Everett, WA just north of Seattle. The HD rack is definately at 75% blu Disk here and 25% HD DVD. When I was drooling over the title in my hand and looking for other new BDs, a guy was looking in the HD DVD section for something to purchase. I stuck up a conversation with him and told him that Underworld just came out in HD. (pretending not to know he will not be able to puchase a copy on HD DVD). He looked his section over and said, "What the F%@K!" And proceeded to go to a floor rep about aquireing an HD DVD Copy of Underworld. I didn't feel quite so smug anymore. There really are innocent people out there that do not belong to either camp and just want their movies to enjoy. I don't know what my point is exactly, but I felt bad for him at this point. It's a shame the format war has come to this for innocent people puchasing into an HD format, not knowing this would be the outcome. Very glad to be Blu today!

Don't feel bad. He should've done his research before purchasing his HD-DVD player. Tough love, that's all it was.

I agree Cyorg. I think TV commercials also may be deceptive to the public and they may asume that everything will be coming their way eventually. That statment is probably true for Blu-ray, but is not/will not be for HD DVD. But yes, just a little time on-line would give one enough information to make the "Correct" decision on a format to choose.

We are all hurt because there are many movies that are HD that we want and the same applies for people that have HD players. It sucks we have to buy 2 players to enjoy the beauty of HD movies in general!

Agreed. I had just become so wrapped up in the daily threads of the old "Us vs. Them" routine that it never occurred to me that there are innocent by standards out there that have no concept that this is going on. And when I see BB's HD DVD shelf space disappearing, well you should have seen the confused and perplexed look on his face at the dwindling selection. I'm dropping all rejoicing in our winning format. Inside, yes I'm very happy and am celebrating the success of Blu, But I will always remember the look on this guys face and realize that there does exist collateral damage of innocent people who want and are expecting nothing more than to see the release of great films just as you and I are. Thanks for your time. Mark.

What's that quote from the Kingpin in Daredevil?

No One is Innocent

Anyway,.. Underworld can be had on HD DUD but you have to import it from Germany. I understand it's even better then the standard DVD version.

The format war sux but it will soon by over,.. I'm buying Blu Rays as often as I can to see to that.

Marc,

If this fella is smart he will realize what is up now. With any luck he has not invested too much into HD DVD. Anyone who continues to buy them thinking things are going to swing in favor of HD DVD is just getting themselves deeper into the red so to speak.

People should check the facts and then if they bought the format without a future they should cut their losses now and sell back what they can.

With luck he may be able to recover most of the cash he wasted on HD DVD. The best thing is for people to realize this sooner instead of later.

most are that way. Why do you think some of us are so annoyed to the constant lies of HD DVD supporters? Do you think it is because there is fear that BD will lose to HD DVD? It is just sad to see someone else being conned.

This is precisely why the dual-formats are so poisonous to the success of any standard. Most potential customers are not videophiles. Not only do they not necessarily research purchases the way people on this forum might, they have little desire to do so.

There's a reason that most VCRs in this country never evolved beyond having a blinking "12:00" on the front panel.

Most people don't like to make decisions. And they especially don't like decisions where either too much information is required or the decision could be impacted by factors outside their control. For many, the potential benefit offered by the high-def DVDs isn't worth the risks. Until buying hi-def is simple and safe, a large portion of the potential market is going to stay away.

Thats exactly correct. We and they are a different breed. We hit the web sites, are charged up like solders, write and read threads, but there are just average joes out there that take a commercial's or someone's word that this the one and only format to go with their HD TV set. Anyway, I'm sure we have all felt disappointments over this and that in our lives and I'm sorry to see this one example knowing there are thousands just like him who will watch their format disinigrate into oblivion some day. Hey, He will still have his HD DVD player and movies and a blu player will only be $199.00 by that time at Target or where ever. Blu forever!

I feel more sorry for people who assume "Research" should involve merely talking to people. This SHOULD be true! But clearly isn't.

Case in point: Went to best buy today to get Memoires of a Geisha... couldn't find them. The movie guy happened by and my wife actually asked for help (for the first time ever, I swear!)... he told us that he only got HD DVD copies, no blu-rays for some reason!

I said "isn't it by Sony though?" and he said "Pretty sure they release on both"....

Needless to say we found three copies in the middle of all the HD DVDs.

I been saying that all along. Don't rub their noses in it, and they deserve inexpensive combo players to preserve their movie investment. In a recent poll I had, most people voted to "screw them" and just cut them off cold turkey. I plan on welcoming them with open arms. No need to make enemies with people who are converting to blu.

Great Point and excellent attitude Tron3. I was never one of the hardcore laugh in their faces in times of tragedy types as is apparent occasionally on this web site, but it did solidify a new perspective for me. Thank you for the input everyone and the excellent membership correspondence. Mark

Sadly, this situation is exactly what may keep the average consumer from buying into either of the next generation formats.

See this should be our goal here. We need to educate not scorn. The more people we get on our side the healthier our side will be. Most HD-DUD customers don't have a clue as to what they're getting into. This is where the BDA get's off their ass and starts posting floor displays with fliers educating all would-be HD consumers as to the benefits of Blu-ray. They need to know our studio support, our industry support for players and other media, the PS3, the technological differences between Blu and HD-DUD. I have to admit after the Paramount thing I was pretty bitter but that was not a decision any paying consumer had a choice over. At the end of the day we all just want to watch our favorite movies. Over on my Nov. 23rd Buy-a-thon thread I'm trying to come up with a way to pass out some kind of fliers to educate Black Friday purchasers that might still be on the fence and simply buying which ever unit is cheaper. At this point we need to focus on converting and not scoffing or laughing at potential Blu's.

well, when you have employees of best buy like this moron who tried to convince me that sony is behind HDDVD. I got in an argument with him for about 15 to 20 mins and he kept insisting that i am wrong. but anyways like such employees they contribute to consumer confusion. they are part of the problem.
