Default Will "The Avengers" suck?!

Okay, we're getting down to it. "The Avengers" will be out next year, combining several Marvel heroes into one glorious epic. The hype's been starting since at least 2008, when they started injecting "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk" with snippets of Nick Fury and Shield stuff. Now they've got several movies in place that describe the origins of each participating major hero and all the Marvel lore is being pieced together rather cohesively.

This got me thinking...with this much hype and this much investment in time money and resources, what if the movie winds up sucking? What if there's too many heroes to juggle in one story? What if the stakes become so high that the filmmakers start cutting corners and making mistakes? Or, what I fear the most, what if the executives decide to butt in on the project to protect their investment (as was already done in "Wolverine" and "The Green Lantern")?!

So, as the release date comes closer, what do you think? Will the movie live up to its expectations, or is it too ambitious to succeed?

we dont have to worry about executives butting in like Wolverine and GL because the executives in the case of Avengers is MARVEL. it has a huge budget so we dont have to be worried about cutting corners, and it has a directer known for his ability to juggle ensemble casts. i have no doubt thats Avengers will live up to the hype.

Marvel’s track record would point to NO….it will not suck.

Marvel is 5/5 for me….loved every movie they’ve released so far.

I really don’t think they’d take that much time w/5 movies and blow the final one!!

May can't get here soon enough!!

There's no way for us to know for sure that it will be good...but with Marvel's track record and the pieces (read: people) that are in place, it would be a phenomenal achievement if they somehow made this anything less than awesome.

Like Benny, Marvel is still batting a thousand with me. Each of their 5 films have earned a 4.5/5 from me (for a little while I scored Iron Man 2/Incredible Hulk above that and Iron Man below it).

The only unknown from the acting perspective is going to be Ruffalo. How does he mesh with the group? What does he bring to the role of Banner? I was on him at first, but I have since read about some of his performances from his fellow actors and have seen a few more for myself and am now behind him for the role and think he'll do just fine.
Everyone from the previous films did great with two of them doing fantastic (RDJ and Hemsworth), so absolutely nothing to worry about there.

Marvel is doing their part and not penny pinching this time around as the reported budget is quite high. I doubt it's actually what has been reported, but even if they report is off by a large margin, the budget is still huge and sufficient for the effects (both practical and special) that will be needed to create the amount of spectacle this movie needs to have.

I'm not too familiar with Whedon's work, none of it has ever really interested me, but I have friends (both on this site and not) that I have heard talk about his capability to handle large casts with multiple "leads" quite well, and in listening/reading the guy talk about the film, I have faith that he will deliver the goods come May 2012.

And on the side of the big boys, I don't think Disney will risk doing anything to screw this one up. It will be their first film with Marvel and they have paid Paramount a big chunk of change to get its distribution rights, so they need it to perform and Marvel has showed thus far that its films perform (with the exception of Incredible Hulk under performing...but that one had a big up hill battle to fight after the last film).

I'm hoping the best for 'The Avengers' movie! I still have yet to see 'Thor' or 'Captain America', but when May rolls back around, I'll be ready!

Actually with the 5 avengers movie already out, the track record shows that The Avengers movie would suck.

The Incredible Hulk was good.
Iron Man was great
Iron Man 2 WTF was that
Thor was OK
Captain America I can't count how many times I slept through that movie.

However I own them all and can't wait to see The Avengers in the theater

If Avengers sucks then I will lose hope in not just hollywood, but Humanity.
The 5 lead-up movies have ranked between 8/10 to 10/10 for me,so yeah if it sucks all hope is lost(Of course Three Stooges is making alot of money so that just adds to that, lol)

BTW my scores....

Iron Man 9.5/10
Incredible Hulk 10/10
Iron Man II 8/10
Thor 8/10
Captain America:First Avenger 9/10

And Thor exceeded all expectations because I never liked Thor all that much and wasn't expecting anything higher than a 6/10 score.

I think it could be good.

I am not sure which characters are going to be in but The latest hulk was solid. Iron man was great, Captain America was decent, Thor was fun.

I think the big thing is keeping the actors associated with these characters.

Downey Jr as Iron man
Scarlett as Black Widow ( this one could be changed though)
Jackson as Fury
Helmsley as thor
Evans as Cap America
Norton as Hulk

Some big names in that list.

I voted for Awesome though, Mostly out of hope.

With Marvel's track record (5/5 excellent movies), I think Avengers will be great! Marvel has invested too much to turn out anything but a great movie.

Norton is not playing Banner, hes been out for over a year now. Mark Ruffalo is playing Banner/Hulk. all the other actors are back.

For me, a superhero-based movie isn't worth a damn without a worthwhile villain(s). The Skrulls could work, but a Thanos announcement would be better. Finding the right villain(s), along with the right actor(s) for that role will determine if The Avengers are worth seeing.

Loki is the villain.

Thanos won't be around until a potential sequel...or threequel. But he's out there, his gauntlet is in Odin's vault.

I can see it being a cluster**** with too many characters and just focus on the action. So no decent plotline.

Do comic book movies ever have plotlines? OK sure you've got me on Batman Begins, which is like the From Russia With Love of the genre.

That, and Whedon is a fan. C'mon, he's the guy who brought back Colossus in the X-Men comics. Plus, he knows how to make a good action movie with heart. While Serenity wasn't loved by critics, it is ACES!! So I'm not worried if they don't like TA either. I only worry whether the fans and general audience will still go and see it.
