I had a Superman marathon yesterday watched all 5 movies, am more than happy with the box set, 1 & 2 are awesome 3 has it's moments, 4 is far the worst and I don't get all the hate for Returns I quite like it expect for Kate Bosworth as Lois lane.

Instead of starting a new thread, I was wandering what you guys think of Superman 2: The Richard Donner Cut compared to the Lester Cut ?
I myself only watched it once years ago when it first came out. It was interesting to see but I thought the Lester Cut was a much better movie. I will have to get around to watching them both again sometime soon. |

I'm 50/50 when it comes to 2. I like the Donner Cut because the tone is more consistent between the first two. Having said that the use of screen tests, the re-use of the first film's ending (in reality the first film using the second's ending) and the need to use Lester shot footage really doesn't sell it 100%. So, Donner's is a curiosity for me and a taste of what the real deal might have been like whilst Lester's feels like a complete film.
Had Donner not been given the boot I think the Superman II that he would have turned in would have been better than what we ended up with. Still, as it stands the recreation of what might have been is great to have, though obviously incomplete. |

I don't think I'll get the BD box-set.
I've already got the 13 disc DVD box set and the single disc Superman Blu-Ray and I am happy with that. I doubt I will get another Superman Blu-ray disc unless they release the full, complete version of the original movie. I copied the movie off the TV in Oct 1986 and it is almost 3 hours long without ad breaks. I still have the version too. Not great quality when compared to DVD or the BD versions but bloody good for being 25 years old. |

I'm with atexp80 - his comments above match my thoughts well.
It's a pity the Donner cut is incomplete, and of necessity recycles itself, because it could have been a worthy follow-up to the first one, which is still one of the best-ever superhero films. As Lester's version stands, it's the more complete film, but is kinda schizophrenic -- the Lester footage and Donner footage seem very different in tone, and never quite blend, making it quite an uneven watch. And Lester's footage is dominated by a kind of goofball tone that I never seem to enjoy. I've contemplated buying the boxed set (from AmUK), but haven't really felt moved to yet. I don't much care for Lester's 2, or 3, or 4; I would only ever really watch the Expanded version of 1; and last time I watched Returns it irritated me too much to enjoy. So ... is the boxed set worth it? I'm not sure. Buying the films I would watch as separate titles will cost me just as much, maybe more, but it feels foolish to buy the set only to have most of the discs sit on the shelf untouched. |
