Default Why can't my PS3 decode '.avi'?

I have been trying all morning to figure out why my DVD's encoded at '.avi' will not play on the PS3. The machine says unsupported format.

I have been looking for a free file conversion to mpeg2 or mpeg4, but it is really slow. Any suggestions?

Thanks is advance

Cause AVI sucks J/K
Because it uses the MPEG 4 format, not AVI. Just convert it to .mp4 and it should run fine.

I use Quicktime pro.. but that is not free. sorry.

You can try iTunes cause it has a conversion tool but I can't promise it will work for videos.

I think I know why he asked though. In the online manual it say AVI will work for movies saved on the harddrive. It has never worked for me, so I also recommend Super by E right soft. It may take a while to do a full movie but it really gives the best quality while using less space than any other converters I have used.

MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and Divx are all codecs. AVI, MP4, MPG, and MKV are all containers.

I doubt the PS3 will ever support the .AVI container as it was developed by Microsoft for use with their Windows platforms. If Microsoft was nice enough to allow Sony to use their format (which I doubt) then we may see it.

As many people said in posts above, just find a good conversion program and you'll be fine.

Well thanks for the inappropriate responses to this thread. I was reviewing a seminar from work which was recorded on a DVD+ in '.avi' format. The content on the DVD's was a tutorial on using a program for creating microprocessors by creating nmos and pmos transistors at the metal layer. I just thought the knowledge base in this web site would be able to give me a quick response.

I was not directing my comments at you. Read the other posts regarding porn and pirated content.

FWIW... the SUPER C program linked to earlier is pretty good about transcoding and has a tab specifically for the PS3s implementation of MPEG-4/AVC.
