Canada VVS Films

A Canadian Company out of Montreal that releases BAREBONES releases of movies on blu-ray.

If you want a complete blu-ray release with extras, you'll want to avoid VVS Films. But if you want to only pay $5 for a blu-ray movie with ZERO extras, then they are good bang for the buck.

The quality control is iffy as my VVS Films release of Solitary Man had some digital pixelation occur about 4 times during the first party scene.

No pixelation or other screw-ups to report in the VVS Films Transsiberian blu-ray.

I am unsure if the aspect ratio of the VVS Films releases are Original Aspect Ratio or the Alliance Crappola Changed Aspect Ratio we love to hate.

Welllll actually, many VVS discs DO HAVE EXTRAS. I have a few of their discs that have extras (Leaves of Grass, Bad Lieutenant, Stone), & a couple that don't (King of Fighters, Five Minutes of Heaven), & a couple others that don't have a US release (My Son My Son What Have Ye Done w/ plenty of extras, Cash w/ no extras).

You just have to be careful with the audio though. If I recall, Bad Lieutenant and Brooklyn's Finest are Dolby Digital 5.1

For blu-ray releases, VVS Films are on the same level as Alliance. Good bang for the buck but often flawed whether there is lack of extras, shoddy transfer, and so on. But again for what I paid for each VVS blu-ray($5), I am still happy with both VVS releases. I wonder if VVS Films use incorrect aspect ratios like some of the Alliance releases?

Brooklyn's finest was changed for their release to 1.78:1

Many of VVS’ releases are region free. Does anyone know of that’s also true for Laggies, The Beach Bum, 99 Homes, Imperium, The Farewell? Thanks!

The Beach Bum, 99 Homes, Imperium, and The Farewell are for sure. I just checked them for you and will update them in the database.
In fact, I don't think VVS region locks any of their discs (I've yet to come across one and I own many of their discs), so you should be able to play any of them.

VVS have not released a 4K Blu-ray since The Protégé (2021). Are they even releasing 4Ks in the future?

These days their audio is all Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (except commentary tracks)

They've also been including Dolby Atmos on some of their releases. Dream Scenario's Canadian Blu-ray release has it while the US Lionsgate release doesn't. But the annoying thing is that digitally, that and some other films distributed by VVS are 4K SDR while the US version distributed by someone else has HDR.

But then on the other hand, there are cases like The Hit Man (2023) which VVS has released on Blu-ray but there is no US release. And seemingly all their releases are region free, which is excellent. I think they've stopped releasing any new 4K Blu-rays though.

VVS never actually produced its own 4k discs. All of the ones they released were Lionsgate releases in the US and the discs they provided were exact copies of the US Lionsgate release, with LG’s branding on the disc and everything. Maybe they are no longer permitted to do this and it’s not worth it for them to create their own discs.

Another thing to note about VVS is that their releases are way cheaper at Walmart than anywhere else. Usually $19.96 or $21.96 on release date, and then a month or so later the price drops to $10. For some reason, Sunrise tries to sell them for $40 and I’d be surprised if they sold any discs at that price.

Definitely. I've noticed that with the couple of their 4Ks that I have. The included Blu-ray disc is from VVS while the 4K disc is from Lionsgate. That's different than Elevation or eOne (formerly), where they print their own 4K discs.

VVS releases are cheaper at a Walmart. Some were even $5 in the bargain bin, which has since been removed. I've also seen them at okay prices at random Shoppers locations.
