The Witch and the Hundred Calvarymen

Remember that mysterious character Nippon Ichi revealed in August? She's the star of an upcoming action RPG called The Witch and the Hundred Calvarymen. The PlayStation 3 game, as explained by Dengeki PlayStation, is an open world dark fantasy action RPG.

Nippon Ichi promises a seamless world with no transitions between towns and the game world. The magazine touts players will have a high degree of freedom since the game is a sandbox world where players can side with right or wrong. Residents have certain parameters and can become enemies depending on player actions.

You play as the hundred calvarymen who are summoned by the witch to a sandbox world. The Witch and the Hundred Calvarymen has some dungeon RPG elements. For example, the game does not end when you die. You recover, but lose your items. Graphics in the game are 3D and be played from a top down perspective.

One significant change is the style. Compared to other Nippon Ichi titles, The Witch and the Hundred Calvarymen will be dark and show brutality. However, the game won't be gory. Disgaea designer Takehito Harada is doing the game's graphics.

The Witch and the Hundred Calvarymen is slated for release in spring 2012.

The backgrounds have a gorgeous, detailed pre-rendered look to them. Cute characters and the HUD's super stylish too. Fingers crossed for satisfying combat and everything holds up at native res. 1080p like Disgaea would be godlike.

▲ Main character Metallica is to the right. The player character, Hiyakkihei, is to the left. Hiyakkihei is one of 100 soldiers Metallica can call upon for battle. It's the only one who has a permanent physical form. You can change his name if you like.



▲ We see Hyakkihei taking on a side quest from someone who's described as a "suspicious fish man." You can accept their quests, or attack them -- it's up to you!

▲ Here's a scene showing another one of the 100 soldiers, Tochika. the remaining 99 soldiers can appear in physical form for brief periods. They'll support you in various ways.





The Witch and the Hundred Soldiers is due for PS3 release in Spring 2012. The game's limited edition will include a Puchi Nendoroid figure for Metallica, a two disc soundtrack, and a hard cover art book.

That HUD is a mess.

Other than the HUD, I like the art style, and it's nice to see NIS branching out in what sort of games they'll develop.

The art styel of the actual gameplay looks really cool, I don't care for the look of the non-gameplay art. Will be interesting to see how it plays.
