Default Game of Thrones - A Storm of Swords Season 3 & 4 Update

http://winter-is-coming.net/2011/11/...-back-to-back/

Quote:
We reported on this in another post, but the rumors continue to swirl and so we thought it deserved its own post. We are now hearing from multiple sources that HBO plans to order both seasons three and four and film them back-to-back (à la Lord of the Rings). It has already been confirmed that A Storm of Swords would be covered in more than one season. From what we have heard, much of the film crew in Northern Ireland has been told of this plan and has been advised to expect nine months of filming next year.

Winter Is Coming: I have no doubt that this is an option that HBO is exploring, perhaps even leaning towards, but I don’t think it is a done deal just yet. HBO likely won’t announce anything official until season two begins, so they could change their minds before then.

It does make sense though, to do it this way, as they’ve already said they will be splitting book three into multiple seasons. This way they get the whole of the book filmed in one go, saving on production costs and keeping the kids from aging in between seasons.
very cool if true

Now I've been told books four and five take place at the same time to cover everyone's perspectives of what's happening. So I wonder if all things work out well with this, those two will be adapted at the same time and some liberties to make it more accessible. I guess the way I'm thinking is how Jackson and co. adapted The Two Towers and Return of the King from book to screen.

I am just happy a season 3 & 4 is planned. Great news that they want to make the most of the source material too.

Yep. They would have to do it at the same time or people would be pissed. Jon, Bran, Dany, and Tyrion are not in the forth book. Most of those are fan favorites.

Think you could spoiler this stuff for folks who haven't read the books. Thanks

couldn't agree more. The walking dead is not walking dead anymore. But just some Zombie show now with all the changes they have done

GoT is awesome hopefully they are gonna stay true to the original source imagine if PJ made the changes TWD producers did. Damn there would be a S... storm

They really have to do stuff like this because of the younger cast members. Either that or draw out the time line to explain why Arya looks 15 instead of 12.

Reintegrating books 4 and 5 works well since at least half of 5 was originally part of book 4.

That's hitting the nail on the head with the issue of child actors/actresses, its not their fault they grow whilst filming but if they can get as much filming done then theres no continuity problems.
plus maybe filming back to back the two series can not only get those series closer to our screens, save a year time wise but also some cash as the cast and crew are already together and its just extending filming time.

Well Im gonna ride the train as long as it goes but it cant end well. Even if they stretch 4 and 5 over three seasons, Martin will prolly still be working on the forward of book 6

Unfortunately, I don't get HBO anymore. I guess I'm going to have to read the books now.

They need to tread carefully because while you can do that in books, it might not translate to a tv show. But if anyone can pull it off it’s the people who've done the casting thus far along with hbo

I thought it was a bad decision to do it in the books. When his publisher decide it was just too long, I guess the priority was offering the complete plot threads for fewer characters as opposed to simply ending each of the threads before their planned conclusions. This led to two uncomfortable results, at least for me. Not only did several main characters not get into book four, but the first half of book five was forced to go back in time to bring in those missing characters. These plot lines in many cases referenced events that had already concluded in book four. I myself didnt have a problem with missing characters in four as most of my favorite character were in both four and the end of five. It was a long read to get to them however.

I dont see this as being a problem in the show as they have the advantage of both four and five to work from which Martin didnt. I would guess that all the characters will be featured and each plot thread will have a bit of a cliff hanger ending leading to the next season. Of course in three years this may have gone the way of other excellent shows inexplicably canceled by HBO.

That's true we may not even see this issue if the viewership drops. Which is why they need to tread carefully because if they get cocky and remove fan favorites they might have shot themselves in the foot, I'd rather they deviate and we get a quality show then try to be super faithful, lose the big numbers and eventually the show gets canceled.

Awesome news There is too much in SoS to cram into ten episodes (heck, Clash of Kings is going to be a tight fit for ten episodes!), so spreading it over two seasons filmed simultaniously would be great!

I can also think of a great place to split the seasons

This is exactly why I won't buy their blu release until I know they've concluded the series right. Carnivale should've went to 6, Deadwood and Rome as well.

I still get upset when I think about Carnivale. More and more people are reading the books now so hopefully viewership will just keep getting bigger and bigger.

As I recall SoS was a cheery book that feature quite a few weddings

The positive spin on Carnivale ending when it did was it freed up Ron Moore to do that little Battlestar Galactica reboot
