Just curious, what kind of software packages did the drive come with?
Its gonna be a little rough for a while, but just stick it out, it'll be worth it

Default That's my dream laptop!

I've been dreaming about that laptop! Am sure it will be perfect for my sony hc1 video camera. For the past 6 months I have been recording HDV and apparently this laptop is designed to capture, edit, play and burn the uncpmpressed HDV 1080i into blu-ray disk! Are you planning to use this laptop for video editing HDV and burning blu-ray?

Default One question at a time...

Many would like to know...If you buy or borrow a Blu-ray movie disc, will it play. If so what was the player program. (It might be Intervideo, Cyber etc. the key thing many of us seek is the version)

Next, if you buy a rewritable disc ($25), can you make a data disc and put files on it. This requires "packet writing software". What software did that use (Nero, AVS, etc) and what version.

Lastly, in the event that you edit videos, is there a "disc authoring program" to make a video disc with a menu that will play in a Blu-ray player. That might be a version of Ulead Movie Factory, Sony's Vegas or MyDVD. I personally will buy a Blu-ray burner drive when authoring software is out. I don't plan to immediately buy a home theatre blu-ray player, but I would test my first burning effort on a player at a local electronics store like BestBuy.

Take your time ... it will take at least 6 months for various products to come out.

Software updates are trickling out, but I haven't really seen any kind of serious effort other than those being pumped into the film industry side of things, I seriously think people are waiting for the dust to settle a bit before they choose sides...

yeah most likely not to mention with little hardware on the market at the time why invest money into devoloping software programs to run that hardware.

We totally hijacked Dalek's thread.... Sorry man, speaking for myself I get a little carried away, I guess the point we're trying to make is that there really isn't a whole loat out there yet, best option right now is to stick with what you have onboard you Ar190g for the moment and keep an eye out for any "breaking news" as far as developments I'm guessing probably late fourth quarter 06 early first quarter 07, definitely after the PS3 hits the market, I think that release is what everyones been waiting for, not because it has anything to do with computer software, but it will finally give BD a viable hold on the HD market, allowing for more focus and 'robustifying' everything else. In my opinion, its the Pizazz this whole "launch" has been missing

I bought this unit for the same reason, to capture and edit hd movies. and today i just returned it.

The software they include is a joke, you can create clips and that's about it, no titles, no effect, no nothing.

The main reason for returning my unit is the software for the bd was malfunctioning and freezing when trying to use it, basically the bd function would not work. the optical out was also only out putting 2 channel. the computer did not realize it even had an optical out.

All in all i had my hopes way up for this little baby and it let me down big time. even right out of the box, it seemed as though it could not even handle a simple task that was preinstalled.

optical out can only send out what it's set to
my vgn-ar11s laptop(in UK) would only send 2 channel too until i told it via control panel to send 5.1
also graphics driver needed an update before a BD movie would play on mine
