Default Blu-ray ads

Has anyone else noticed that in recent ads for upcomming dvd/bluray releases, the blu-ray version has been getting the back burner reatment. Like the ad for surfs up, they relly put emphisis on the standard ver, and downplay the blu ver. The same w/ fantastic 4, and Live free or Die hard. All through the summer of 07 though, when an ad for an upcomming movie aired they really show cased the blu-ray ver. What gives latley ? If the industry wants this to be the new standard in home video why the sudden change in theese ads.

Hi,

Your right on this one. I started seeing ads for Transformers early this week and they have continued every night saying coming the 16th on both DVD and HD-DVD. The titles that are coming for DVD and Blu say nothing about Blu?

I don't think this is true for recent ads on HD stations, such as HDNet, where Disney has been showing ads for "Disney Blu-ray" and don't even mention the DVD versions for their upcoming releases. The ads seem targeted to HD audiences.

The latest Home Media Magazine had some good Blu-ray ads, check out the Disney one, looks pretty solid to me.

with surf's up did anybody catch the blu logo at the very end. i think that is more powerful than saying on blu-ray and dvd. cause how many other formats out there have we heard and just been like who cares. i remember thinking when they said now availiable on psp and dvd that it was the dumbest thing ever. and i think most ppl say cool its coming out on dvd and just ignore whatever else they said. but by flashing a bd logo with noise it catches ppl off guard cause they are like wtf was that. no disc media has ever had a flashed logo at the end of every commercial so its a unique technique that i think pyschologically has more impact.

Sorry fellas/gals, I guess I should've been more specifec when I say ads, I mean television commercial ads. Pay close attn to this the next time you're watching the bubetube and a movie ad comes on for a movie that you know for a fact that this film is slated for both formats.

Nov "Home Theater" mag has a two page Blu spread on the inside front cover, while the sad Toshiba "upside down, plays HD DVDs and DVDs!" ad is lost in the back somewhere.

The best part of not showing any ads in Blu-Ray is well... Blu-Ray still seems to be winning the battle in the HD movie world! I like what they are doing, it looks like they are getting hardware back-up before they get into the software back-up.

I was pretty young when betamax came out and the one thing that I keep hearing to why they lost the battle was that Sony only was the only one that made betamax, and well if you look at it now only Toshiba is the only one to make HD-Dvd. I myself am not worried about ads, cause when all the cards are in place there will be ads from of everyone that wants to sell there hardware, and unlike the HD Dvd camp having Toshiba and MS doing the add and paying people off, BDA will have loads of people putting there money into ads to promote Blu Ray, it is a actually a very smart strat on BDA camp to have HD DVD out of the picture by hopefully next Christmas season.

The not-so-subliminal advertising technique.

I was one yesterday for Fantastic 4 where in the end when they show the DVD and the Blu-Ray the Blu-Ray was in front of the DVD so you could clearly see it. That's the first time that I have seen that.

Not so my friend. In the tv ad (in Massachusetts any) they only show the standard dvd ver. They don't even mention the blu-ray ver .

I agree it's totally dumb -- just like in ads for HD-DVD exclusive titles, why does "HD-DVD" always come second? Why not say, "Buy Knocked Up now on HD-DVD! Also available on DVD." Ad men have such a twisted sense of priorities.

I'm afraid I have a DVR so I don't watch commercials and the only movies i watch are blu-ray's themselves which of course advertise blu-ray's. But the few times the commercials have run I've seen those ridiculous commercials where they pay celebrities (Michael Imperoli) to push a product I'm sure they've never even used.

If they were serious about marketing Blu-ray, they would reference it throughout the ad then mention DVD and special editions on DVD 'after the fact' (as they do Blu-ray right now).

They do not need to push the 'on DVD' thing... People _know_ it's on DVD if it's coming out. That's the expectation. The thing many studios and manufacturers are forgetting is that they need to _change the expectation_ if they want HDM to take off.

Unfortunately, big business is also sort of like bullies... Really big but total pussies on the inside. Big business is always insecure and it is why they often have a hard time stepping up to do marketing properly (with risk) and take the more conservative road.

I will give props to Disney though... Disney is very progressive given their size for sure. Disney is a very confident company and it shows through their actions and the statements of their CEO.
