The Iron Giant (Blu-ray in the works)

Looks like Warner Bros. may be gearing up for a Blu-ray release of Brad Bird's 1999 animated film The Iron Giant:

“I’ve been talking with Warner Bros for basically the past ten years, and all sorts of options have been discussed", he told us. There’s been talk of doing about a minute and a half, two minutes, of new animation for it, that were some sequences that we designed in the original, that I think were cool. There’s been talk of doing 3D. There’s been talk of doing a limited digital release, kind of like Blade Runner had. And all of them kind of blossom and fade. Now, we’re having more serious discussions about doing something in anticipation of the Blu-ray.

“But I don’t want the Blu-ray to simply be a higher resolution version of our DVD. I would love to get into some of the stuff, now we all have some perspective, that went into the making of it. There’s a lot of good stories there that haven’t been told about the struggles that we went through. We’ll see what happens, but we are in discussions about it right now”.

Hopefully we see this in 2012, and it looks like there will be some great supplements included if Brad Bird is involved!

This is one of my favorite films as a child. Probably my favorite. I'm so happy that the film is finally being released.

Also happy to see that WB is actually talking to their director and trying to make this release extra special. Sounds like a good retrospective documentary, theatrical release and maybe even new sequences!

Day One purchase! I didn't see this until recently, but it definitely lived up to its positive reputation - great characters, great story, and a very appealing animation style.

I hadn't seen it in a while, but that's what I figured. Thanks for the clip. I can't wait to delve into a possible extended cut of this. Just to watch a retrospect featurette would make me happy. I hope Bird gets what he wants from WB.
