Default The Reaping, 10-16... 4 1/2 star PQ!

Looks like it got a 4 1/2 star PQ and 5 star AQ (TrueHD) And is available on 10-16-07. I think I'm gonna go ahead and try this one out, I like the cast, and the previews looked good. Plus it's Transformers day, BD could use the love

VIDEO: 1/2
As I expected with a “new release”, the video presentation was very good. In fact, if there weren’t a couple of nits to pick, it could have garnered a perfect score. The highs in the VC-1 encode are a flawless print, excellent depth and very lifelike color reproduction. Skin tones are spot on as well, with phenomenal detail in close-ups. Where the video falls short though are in some low light situations, where some detail is lost and the shadow delineation isn’t as good as I have seen on either HD media available. Also in these low light situations, the picture gets a little noisy as well, which detracts from the overall look of the film. But other than these minor occurrences, this is a fantastic video presentation.

AUDIO:
Supporting the lossless TrueHD format, the audio presentation on this disc is outstanding. The depth of the soundstage is wide and deep, and be prepared for sound coming at you from all directions, even the ceiling! Imaging across the front is well done with dialogue firmly rooted in the center channel, but it is the active use of the surround speakers and .LFE effects, which make this a reference mix. There were times when I thought that the creeping coming from my ceiling was my projector mount preparing to dislodge itself, but alas, it was only the sound mix setting the ambiance. This is one of those cases

Anyone see this theatrically?

I'd never heard of this but the plot sounds like something I would like. I'll try it out!

The movie wasn't out for long in theaters, but it looks interesting. May pick this up, but will rent first to see if it's worth owning.

I was disappointed by the story. I was expecting something good based on the previews, but the movie just didn't deliver for me. It was pretty dull.

So I watched this movie tonight... The PQ is pretty much horrible. Alright well not horrible, but a 2.5/5 at least. There is color banding, yes, color banding. In one scene, there's a shot underwater where it's red, and there's actually color banding. Also, there is clearly some sort of digital error in another scene, where AnnaSophia Robb's blonde hair, has blue streaks in it. It's very odd and it's not pixels, it actually stays on her hair and if you go frame by frame, you can watch it actually crawl up her hair on her face and then when the camera angle changes it's gone. It's very odd and I've never seen it before.

I wouldn't say 2.5 stars but maybe 3.5 at most. The "David Vaughn" person who gave it 4.5 must be blind. (Is that the same guy who's masquerading as an insider at AVS?)

Surprisingly, the PQ didn't bother me much although as soon as I leaned forward in my couch it was pretty clear there was no amount of detail close to 1080p on the screen. The underwater banding was pretty bad, but many scenes underwater do have banding in other movies too so maybe it's a hard scene.

I did enjoy the story. Don't take the religious/satanic stuff too seriously (this movie isn't really one with a religious message, it's just entertainment) and you can enjoy it.

enjoy

The reviews on PQ I've seen thus far for The Reaping have been low 2.5-3 stars on the two major sites.

I liked this movie and wanted it but I'm not gonna buy a poor transfer with low PQ.

I think the DV rating can be explained in the same way as Bracke's usually excessive ratings for Warner PQ: it's a dual format release. The 3 stars at HDD for this one were awarded by Brown, who is much more trustworthy.

Finally watched this on blu. The PQ is bad. Some shots looked faded and needed sharpening.

The movie itself is very underrated IMO. I am in love with it.

Quick question:
I want to get this movie on bluray since I'm getting rid of my DVDs. But I've read that the PQ of this edition is terrible. Does anybody know if there's another edition out there with a different/better transfer? Thanks!

It's been a while since you asked this question, but, for what's worth, the PQ of this movie is fine. It's not the best, it's now a relatively old movie, but the PQ isn't terrible. I just watched it today, and despite its flaws, it didn't deter me from enjoying the movie or following the action. If you really like the movie and/or can get it for cheap, go ahead.

Hilary Swank looks absolutely amazing in this movie, this is the most gorgeous she's ever looked IMO. It's not an amazing movie but i do think it's a decent one and i particularly like the leading trio of Swank, Elba and Morrissey.

This movie could benefit from a Shout Factory release since they’ve been releasing Dark Castle Entertainment movies.
