Well, what a surprise I had tonight. I popped in Disc 1 of Planet Earth into my Playstation 3. It showed the loading icon at the top right of the screen...and idled for a little while. Then the icon disappeared. So...I tried disc two, popped it in and it worked just fine. So, I went ahead and analyzed the two discs to see what I could find. The two pictures below illustrate the differences between the two discs(the one on the right is Disc 1, the nonfunctional disc).

I've had Planet Earth since the pre-orders were available on Amazon.com after the official announcement...so they've been in my collection for a bit. It almost looks like a burn...or general discoloration. I remember reading somewhere on the internet about a bacteria that supposedly fed on Blu Ray discs? Any thoughts? Can you return something you bought on Amazon.com in the past? Or can I go directly to the manufacturer?

Sorry Manco, it's an apartment, I can't help the carpeting(maybe I should just link the photos?). They are more interested in stain resistance rather than eye pleasing design.
**OK, I linked them instead...and posted a smaller pic of just the discs and less carpet, high res available shortly below that... Last edited by mikeevansinmd; 10-07-2007 at 05:50 AM. |

According to my non scientific tests - this is not indicitive of a heat issue. I used one of my Demo discs over the stove at full blast. Melted down the disc numerous times with rapid cold water cooling.
The disc deformed and bent. The scratch resistant cover on the disc, from what I saw, does not melt at high tempratures. I pulled a piece off and set it on the burner and it curled, but did not melt. Whatever this tuff is is TOUGH as hell! I think this issue is a quality control one. Did this disc play before? Was it discolored beforehand? |

That's intense heat though - could it just be from lying out in the sun?

I haven't removed it from the case other than to pop into the PS3 to play a few times(i think I have viewed this disc maybe 6 or 7 times of which it did work). I don't know if it was discolored to begin with, but it's quite possible...but I sincerely have no idea, its been months since I bought it.
It's been about 3 months though since I actually watched it. Generally speaking, the location it was stored in was about 72 Degree Farenheit and mid to low humidity. But considering that it was stored both in the plastic box and in the cardboard slip, it should have been generally protected. |

So...according to Amazon's policy, it's a 30 day return/exchange. I bought Planet Earth back in April for pre order and it arrived in May (the 8th or so). I don't think I'll be able to get Amazon to replace it, considering. So...how do I contact the BBC? Do they have a direct movie department, because from everything I can tell, this has to be a manufacturing degradation and not something I did, as the other discs look perfect?
