Default Sony's BDP-S1

Anybody know why this machine can't play audio CDs, but Samsung's model can?

Also, do you think we'll have a 5-BD carousel player by Christmas?

I'd be suprised if it doesn't....but Since i've got like 4-5 optical devices now that all play CD's sitting around my TV, i'll be ok.

Don't expect a 5BR player anytime soon. like for a yr or 2.

yeah a year or 2 for the carosel players. I'm sure it'll play audio cds just probably doesn't list it in the specs simply because there isn't much reason to put it there.

Yeah who's trying to wear out their laser playing 20 yr old technology on it (CD's) that is. I'm keeping my BR player (when i get it) for watching BR movies. I will leave my upconvert sony carousel connected for cd's/dvd's

Bestbuy.com finally changed availability date for the BDP-S1. It now states...between 10/24 & 10/31

Could be a Blu Hallows Eve this year!

If the discs are better by the time the Sony gets released then I'm all for it. Perhaps they can release some good horror flicks for Halloween while they're at it.

Who says it can't play CDs? CDs are automatically compatible with DVDs, therefore, I don't see why it won't play CDs since it plays DVDs.

I think crutchfield.com lists it as "no" on cd playback. But cd/dvd playback is a standard for BR.

I read that a lot of future BR players won't be doing cds at all. www.ulimateavmag.com review of the samsung mentions that.

For me it won't be a problem I can just leave my dvd hooked up to componet inputs and surround sound for cd and/or dvd playback and have blu-ray for bd discs or for dvd upscaling

For a thousand bucks plus, I can see where this kind of thing can stick in some people's craw.

On one certain prominent forum, you have some people practically ready to bring out the execution squad over this.

Frankly, I don't think it's any big deal simply because: Most early adopters that are going to swing "the big bucks" on first gen hardware for either HD format, or both, already own at least one, if not more, devices that can play CD's. How many CD players do people need? Honestly?

Somewhere down the road, when the format wars are over, that will be the day where people can finally outirght REPLACE older players with either a new HD universal player or whatever ultimate unified/victorious format player.

This just isn't the time.

For example:

I'll be keeping my Onkyo DVSP1000 Universal player no matter what simply because it's easily the best audio player you can find for $2000 or less, at least.

Contrary to hype, the Toshiba HD-DVD players are DECENT upconverting players, especially at their price point, but they do not equal, let alone exceed, a player like the Onkyo 1000 or some of the other big boys, in terms of upconverting DVD performance.

They also do not match the fanboy hype from some forum thread that HD-DVD zealots were desperately posting all over the place, that suggested that Toshiba had somehow put...what was it..."$3000-$6000" worth of top of the line hardware, DAC's and the rest of it?...

Rubbish.

I will say this: If someone throws down $1500 for one of the big boy Blu-Ray players from the likes of Pioneer Elite or Panasonic...that kind of money should entitle you to a player that you will have no desire or need to replace for several years, at least.

And you pay that extra money for top of the line DACs, tank like build quality, and the rest of it.

my guess is that the top of the line blu-ray players will last you a good couple of years and have nice dacs and i'm happy to pay more for better audio and video performance so long as its delivered.

Finally JTK someone comes out and says that the HD DVD player isn't an OMG destroyer of 3k-6k upconverting players and isn't packed with that amount of stuff.

That's what I'm counting on.

Speaking just for myself: I'm not upgrading my TV or receiver until I have to. Both are less than two years old.

I use electronics until they die, so I'll simply cross that bridge when I have to.

I've been laughing at that link for the last two months (?) since HD-DVD zealots start posting it like it was gospel fact.

ALL it was, was some no name forumer on some forum somewhere making these audacious claims, and the fanboys couldn't have lapped it up and run with it fast enough.

Amazing.

Yeah my problem is that so far in the format war people are taking sides like its apple vs M$ same thing all over again. With tons of misinformation on both sides and people making audacious claims. As it is both formats have there pluses and minuses and we shall see how things shake out.
