Default CBS' "Elementary" (Season 4)

CBS has found its Sherlock Holmes.

TV Pilots 2012: The Complete Guide

Former Dexter killer Jonny Lee Miller has landed the lead role in the network's drama pilot Elementary, described as a New York-set modern take on the cases of the famed detective, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The casting marks a return to series TV for Miller, who guest starred in eight episodes as a motivational speaker with a dark secret on Showtime's Dexter. The feature actor (Trainspotting) previously starred on ABC's primetime soap Eli Stone. He has a pair of features in production: Dark Shadows and Byzantium.

Robert Doherty will write and executive produce the CBS TV Studios project, with CBS vet Sarah Timberman (A Gifted Man, Unforgettable) and Carl Beverly on board as executive producers.

Trying to capitalize on the success of Sherlock but I don't think it'll succeed at all.

More like ripping off the BBC Sherlock Holmes which is also set in modern times. I understand why they set it in modern times, but it worked in that show because it was still London and Sherlock. This sounds like an american Sherlock wanna be, but I may give it a watch.

I like Johnny Lee Miller, but this sounds embarrassing. I hope they keep Holmes English.

I watched it and so did my mother. We both enjoyed it. If you liked Robert Downey Jr's impersonation of Sherlock Holmes then you should give this a chance. Of course it's set in modern times and in New York but holds onto the charm of Sherlock. Lucy Liu plays Watson... I know I know - She's a woman but trust me, it works.

Someone should change the title so people will know what exactly is being discussed.

Anyways, I thought about watching this, but I already watch enough..

I don't think I've ever watched anything Sherlock Holmes so I have no idea how the characters are "supposed" to be but I like this show so far. I still keep seeing Sherlock fans writing this show off, making comparisons and complaining about it, which makes me not ever want to watch Sherlock. Which is unfortunate because I'm sure I'd like it.

That doesn't make any sense. Why would you not want to watch a show through fear of liking it?

Seriously, go and watch Sherlock. It really is one of the best, most creative and original dramas you're ever likely to watch. There's a reason it's one of the most critically acclaimed TV shows in recent years.

I'm not going to give a rant on why I think Elementary is inferior, because I haven't seen it, but suffice to say it definitely wouldn't have gone into production if it wasn't for Sherlock. From what I have heard it's more Sherlock Holmes in name only and that they could have called the characters anything else and it would have been exactly the same.

Honestly, purely based on the reception of both shows I would opt for Sherlock, because Elementary sounds like a generic detective show, whereas Sherlock is a proper take on the Holmes' and Watson's characters, as well as being creative, well-written and original. I would encourage everyone to watch Sherlock first, even though I admittedly haven't seen Elementary.

It makes me not want to watch it because a majority of the fans come across as cocky, as if it's the only version of Sherlock Holmes there ever has been or should be. I never said I didn't want to watch it in fear of liking it, I said it's unfortunate I don't want to because of that reason. That's why I didn't give the specific reasoning in the first place as I'm sure no one will completely understand.

Some people were even mad that Sherlock was tagged with Elementary on Twitter, it's his first name.

It sounds a LOT like an American version.
How? We have an attractive female Watson.

Moffat's 'Sherlock' has never appealed to me - I just think it's fairly poorly written and tries to be too clever and 'modern' for its own good, so completely ruining the atmosphere. I guess I also prefer Sherlock Holmes to be in the late Victorian/early Edwardian period when Doyle set them, as opposed to the modern updates. I absolutely love Granada TV's mid 1980s adaptations (Adventures of Sherlock Holmes/Return of/Memoirs of, etc) - the writting in the early series was absolutely superb, as was the casting, direction, set design. And so on.

But we're all different - if people love 'Sherlock' then fine, the same goes for this new show and all the other adaptations of Holmes over the years.

I've never seen the fans as cocky, not once, they simply see it as one of the best adaptations in years and one of the best ever.
The problem fans have, and this is probably why you think they're cocky, is that went into production and started out life as a Sherlock remake, but the BBC refused to allow CBS to remake it, however they still went ahead with it, albeit altering it enough so that it didn't come too close to the BBC version. So obviously when you have a critically acclaimed TV show and another company decides to remake or do a new version of it there is going to be an uproar, because it doesn't need to be done.
Considering you're admitting you've never seen any Sherlock Holmes isn't it a bit naive to making judgements about fans when you don't know much about the source material? Many Holmes enthusiasts will agree that Sherlock is a great show in the same way the Basil Rathebone films are great. They don't necessarily think Sherlock should be the only version, but when another version is coming along that is directly taken from an existing one, you can understand why so many don't want Elementary.

I'm just at a lose as to why you are reluctant to watch Sherlock, but will happily watch Elementary, especially when the two shows are very similar. If it is because of the fans then I think you're reasoning is flawed, because I would never judge a TV show or film based on the fans. Hey, I'm a Doctor Who fan, but can't stand the attitude many of them have (which btw is not being directed at anybody on this forum). The point is wouldn't it make sense to go for the better of the two shows? Surely if you've taken an interest in Elementary you would also want to watch Sherlock?

Why don't you just watch and decide for yourself ASAP. It will give you a greater understand of how Sherlock Holmes should be and maybe even why many Holmes fans aren't keen on Elementary. Maybe you might actually like it and agree it is brilliant, because it's a great show in its own right and not just as a Sherlock Holmes adaptation.

Yes I know all about that. Maybe the show never had to be made but they wanted to do it anyway, and for all we know, it could fail. If someone ever decided to remake Dexter with a decent cast and would follow the books or go in their own direction, I wouldn't be mad. It wouldn't be the same but if they could pull it off, I'd love to see where the show would go. If it wasn't good, I just wouldn't watch it.

Not really, since I can read what people are saying. While Elementary was airing, I saw a lot of negative comments from Sherlock fans, just nitpicking. Only until now have I seen people admitting to liking both shows. Maybe it's not the best example but when I see these comments, it makes me think of the crazy Justin Bieber fans that think everything he does is amazing and threatens to kill his girlfriend. That's just the vibe I get. Then it makes the fans as a whole look bad, even if they aren't all like that.

I definitely wouldn't say I am "happily" watching Elementary and not Sherlock. I was never extremely excited to watch it, I'm really only interested because I like Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu. I will eventually watch Sherlock, when I feel it's the right time and when I have the time. Like I said, I didn't give my specific reason for a reason since I know no one will completely understand. I know it's not "right" to not watch something based on the fans, but as of now, that's how I feel.

Thank you for not being completely rude about it either.

When I first heard the premise of this I thought it wouldn't be very good. Making Watson a woman even though I like Lucy Liu I didn't think it would work very well, especially after really liking the BBC version.

I however watched the "Pilot" and even though it started off a little slow IMO. I really liked it and look foreword to seeing this weeks episode.

This is one of my favorite shows now! And I don't even like procedurals. Johnny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu are great. The writing is great. And I love me some Sherlock Holmes...the more the better.
