I simply CANNOT understand why ANYONE would report the following:
"Toshiba believes more people are buying PC HD DVD drives with the pure intention to watch high-def movies than people who are buying the PS3. Sources have estimated that just 20% of PS3 owners have played movies on the machine." http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6488493.html Why does an "ESTIMATE" warrant being quoted? I estimate that over 50% of PS3 owners watch Blu-ray movies on their machines. ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by radagast; 10-11-2007 at 04:59 PM. |

just more BS from the terminally ill wing of the DVD Forum. I estimate that 50% of all new born infants are born with their clothes on (Thank you David Letterman). MS is great at getting false and hopeful news out to the net you just have to ignore it, as this only helps spread it.

What of bunch of hooey. Yea, I'm going to either watch my high def on a tiny PC screen or hook this up to my HT. Maybe some will, but I can't imagine most will go about it that way.

I wonder if they count those PCs are part of their Hardware sales? hmm, strange being that most people buy PCs for OTHER PURPOSES THAN WATCHING MOVIES, like.... work?? Toshibia sound so stupid sometimes it makes me wonder if anyone over there in their HDPG really knows jack.
"HD DVD set-tops have reclaimed their dominance over Blu-ray standalone players, according to weekly NPD Group unit sales figures cited by Toshiba." |

i personally find 20% believable.
in any case, if 20% of PS3 are being used as BD players then why don't they count 20% of PS3's when they do their damn "HD players sold comparisons"? they keep saying HD-DVD players are outselling BD players, but DON'T include the 1,000,000 PS3s that are being used as players!! HD player sales are therefore 6.5:1 in favour of BD. we win. again. |

Numbers are stupid anyway. Manufacturers count the number of units they pushed out from their warehouse. What they don't take into account - on purpose, is how many of those units are still on store shelves! They count their out-from-the-warehouse numbers as sold units but that's not the total number sold to the consumer, is it? If it was, no store would have stock of anything, right?
In the case of PS3's last season, the numbers were accurate because the stores were sold out. In that instance, the number of PS3's sold was the same between what the warehouse pumped out and consumers bought. This all goes for software... anything consumers buy. If a store orders 2000 Panasonic shavers, Panasonic says 'wow! 2000 in one week!' but the store will sit on 1950 of those for 8 months or more. |

What's next, they are going to include hd-rom drives as player sales and still discount PS3 as blu-ray player sales?

You know, Ive always said dont use the PS3 sales number or any of these 'estimate' to count towards BD players. Just count the amount of the remotes that were sold, you really wouldnt buy a remote unless you watch movies often on the PS3. I know the number will be lower due to people who uses the controller or figured out a way to get their existing Harmony remotes to work on the PS3, but thats a pretty reliable way to count it.

Though most companies keep records of attachments (smaller products sold on the same receipt as big items such as a PS3). I highly doubt the video rate is 20%. I would think more than 50%. But at least this is for sure: 100% of PS3 owners can immediately buy or rent blu-ray movies and watch them. |
