‘Chronicle’s’ Josh Trank Could Direct ‘Spider-Man’ Spin-Off Movie ‘Venom’

Before Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 was released, the one thing fans were most excited about was we’d finally get to see Venom on the big screen. The character is arguably the most popular of Spider-Man’s villains and to potentially see his origins and battles with the web-slinger was unbelievably exciting. After the film was released, though, the sparse use of the character was listed as one of the its biggest disappointments.

Soon after Spider-Man 3, Sony wised-up to the character’s popularity and began developing a Venom centric movie with Hunger Games director Gary Ross at the helm. It never panned out. But, with the new Amazing Spider-Man around the corner and a hot new superhero director in town, the stars might just be aligning once again.

The Los Angeles Times reports Sony is in negotiations with Chronicle director Josh Trank to helm a new Venom movie. There’s more after the jump.

According to the LA Times article, Sony refused to comment but their anonymous source said the script would not be the same one Ross was developing several years back.

While Josh Trank’s Chronicle wasn’t an official comic book movie, it had better superhero action and characters than innumerable, big name comic book movies with much larger budgets. He was recently rumored to be rebooting the Fantastic Four and while Trank all but denied that rumor, we’ll have to wait and see if Venom is any more real.

For those who don’t know much about Venom, he’s a gooey, fluid like creature who has many of the same abilities as Spider-Man. In fact, he came to be because of Spider-Man found an alien black suit. But once Peter Parker figured out the alien suit was making him do bad things (i.e. – emo Spidey in Spider-Man 3) he discarded it, only to be picked up by Eddie Brock.

A Venom movie, in theory, sounds great but part of what makes the character so memorable is how evil he is. I’m not sure how you’d handle that at the heart of a movie but I trust that, if Trank takes the job, he’ll have an idea worth pursing.

Saw this a few hours ago. I'll say that it sounds like an interesting idea, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. I'd rather them reintroduce him in the new Spidey series, and flesh his character out much more. I like Spider-Man 3, but with Venom being my favorite Spider-Man villain, I was very disappointed with his treatment. His character deserves much more than the late addition that he was to the story. We shall see though.

I don't know why they didn't like the guy who wrote and directed Mean Creek handle the film. He could have brought a dark adaptation but let's hope this is good.

I'm not getting my hopes up after seeing venom in spidy 3. The only person I can imagine playing him is ed hardy due to his build. I heard he's playing Bane, which would would one assume that if he's big enough to play that character he's big enough to play this one.

I think it's Tom Hardy.

Yeah, it is Tom Hardy BUT i don't think it would be an issue considering Bane is bald and big with a mask over his face, and Venon can be played differently.

After all, Chris Evans has been two superheroes and done it successfully IMO, so i'm sure Hardy could pull it off. He's a pretty good actor, and does really well with the roles he's given.

Bronson is a good movie to see if you want to see a more raw performance of his, but the movies emphasis on his dangly bit showing in the prison scenes may make you cringe, otherwise, not a bad film.

He was, he also had his own short run of comics too and he was a definite anti-hero there. Venom was a hybrid of the dark symbiote and the highly ethical imprint that Peter parker left on the symbiote creating a brutal character with a penchant for protecting the innocents (although his way of dealing with the "guilty" was about on par with Ghost rider in terms of "niceness")

Hopefully they get a big guy to play Brock. He looks like a body builder in the comics. Topher Grace was a horrible choice.

I hope it's rated R. A Venom or Carnage movie would really be helped by that rating.

They REALLY need to set the character up in a future Spider-Man movie first.

Agreed.

You know what makes me sad? The fact Gary Ross was wasted attached to this when he would have been ideal for the Spider-Man reboot (not complaining about Webb I should add) or Man of Steel.

I'd rather see Venom done right in The Amazing Spider-Man films, because whenever I've seen them try to spin Venom off into his own story it just feels like they're desperately trying to milk the character.

This plan is just pointless. You can't do a Venom movie without having Spiderman in it. It's not gonna happen.

It's one of those "Misplaced memo from three years ago, and we forgot why we were doing it" movies (from back before Sony stole the Spidey reboot away from Sam Raimi), but I thought Warner did those, not Sony.

It was supposed to be the official Studio Apology for Spiderman 3, but thought the reboot cleaned all the Sam Raimi slates.

+1,000,000,000... Hell, they had Brock cast in Spiderman 2 and changed it in 3 to have Topher Grace... Venom is my favorite villain, Doc Oct is second... Spiderman 3 was horrible with how he was introduced. Venom's story and setup is too much for one film.

and if this was to be made, it'd probably push the PG-13 envelope but it won't be an R rated one in theaters. Home Video is where uncut movies make their money....

I think it could work well if it ties directly with the new Spider-Man movies. Maybe set it up with a brief moment in The Amazing Spider-Man, then spin it off into its own movie, where Venom develops as a bad guy, and then tie it up in another Spider-Man movie where the two face off. Maybe even have the Venom movie take place at the same time as The Amazing Spider-Man, so it can make references to it.

As someone else mentioned, there's no real chance of the film being rated R. Not terribly interested in a PG-13 version, myself.
