I have a PS3 connected to a Onkyo TXSR605 receiver with a Panasonic TH-50PZ700U Plasma TV. I have encountered a few issues with the setup and could use any input from the community please.
1) Is it normal for the receiver to randomly switch off and loose picture sometimes to reset? It is completely random and not sure what it is doing. Sounds like it is switching channels sometimes. We have only 3 speakers and a velodyne sub attached to the receiver. 2) Our main issue. We are trying to watch a Blu-Ray (Fantastic Four Silver Surfer) on the PS3 and we get the background noise which sounds great, but when the characters speak, it is basically mute, or blurry noise that is extremely soft. We have no idea why that is. We use HDMI from the PS3 to the reciever --> and then we have another HDMI going from the receiver to the TV. Thanks in advance for all your help and responses. ![]() |

So your saying check to see if the wires for the speakers in the center are touching eachother?
Seems they are not, just overall very soft muffled sound of voices. |

any sound coming from the center speaker?
Any short could come from any speaker, one small fray wire would trip the reciver, best to wrap the wire with electrical tape & then your 100% sure there is nothing touching. |

something is wrong with your center channel/speaker. There is a test-tone function you can enable on your onkyo. look for a button called "test-tone" on your remote. Try that, and use the arrows to flip thru your speakers

Do a test tone. Every receiver worth its salt has one. See if the tones are playing in all of your speakers correctly.

try changing the PS3 audio setting, so if it is PCM change it to bitstream or the other way around.
Music via the PS3 or something else (cd player mp3 player), trying to figer if is a setting on the PS3 or something with the receiver. |

Ok, it seems that the center speaker is not working correctly. We have it hooked up correctly. Should we just take the center speaker out, use the left and right and then the tv speakers as the center? Is it possible? would the center speaker not having any sound cause this issue?

Test tone revealed all speakers work except for center one. Just blank noise.

could just be the wire.
If you have a 9vt battery (those square one's in smoke/CO2 detectors) you can test the speaker, just touch the - to - & + to + & you will (should) hear a thump. If you have a voltmeter test the wire using the Ohms setting on the meter or take one the wires off one of the working speakers hook it up to the center see what happens. yes you can use the tv speaker as a center, but best to use a speaker. |

You can't use the TV speakers to drive the center channel, not unless you have a pre-out signal for the center channel.
Basically the sound that comes out of your receiver is simply signal + amplification. Signal is the audio that you get (stereo or 5.1) per channel. Amplification is what the receiver do to make the signal softer or louder. If your receiver has a pre-out output - meaning the receiver accepts the signal but using the pre-out the signal has not been amplified - you can use it to drive the center channel with your TV speakers. HOWEVER, the sound quality from the TV speakers will not match the quality from the rest of your surround setup. If your receiver does not have a pre-out, well you don't want to use the center channel output with your TV speakers. It might distort and eventually damage them. Do this simple test to check if it's really the center speaker and not the wires. Since the rest of your speakers work correctly, exchange the center channel connection with the left speaker. Run the test tone again. If the center speaker still doesn't work, then the problem lies with the speaker and you need to get a replacement. If it DOES work, all you need to do is replace the wires. fuad |

Wow thanks alot simply! I appreciate your advice. We reset the whole system, tested all speakers with the receiver at each listening points. Center speaker is now working correctly again. I appreciate all the communities help with my issue. It really helps alot!
One last question, any idea why the receiver unit makes deep base switching sounds sometimes when switching channels? Thanks again all! ![]() |

The receiver does that because it doesn't filter out the audio signal. Your TV/cable box sends the "deep base" audio signal when you change channels. The receiver is basically amplifying that. The fault lies on your TV/cable box for not filtering the audio bump. If your receiver did the filtering, well you're going to miss out on a lot of sudden audio bumps in movies.
The steps for setting up home theaters are: 1. Connect the speakers correctly: mind the polarity (if you don't know what is negative or positive, just pick a color coded wire, connect it to the red output, and keep doing that to the rest of the wires) and loose wires (loose wires can cause the amp to short circuit). 2. Turn on the system. 3. Do a test tone and sound setup. Some receivers have auto calibration. If the test tone doesn't sound right, turn off the receiver then check your connections. 4. If it works right, then connect your sources correctly: BD player, PS3, turntable. Ensure that the receiver knows what input (analog, coax, optical or HDMI) to use with the sound and video sources. 5. Enjoy your setup. fuad |

I just got the 605 and I have a few questions regarding some issues. I have the Samsung 1000 connectedt to it via HDMI.
Now, when I set the Samsung to PCM and I have the 605 set to "Direct," the sound only is coming out of my left and right speakers. I am getting no surround sound, basically just stereo sound. What is up with this? Or do I just have it on the wrong settings to get true PCM? |
