Oh man oh man!

I've been waiting for this for a long time!

Hopefully, this means a US release will be coming soon.

Can't wait to see the packaging of this edition.

I wish this was officially announced and priced though... 20% off at HMV would have been nice

I'll watch Friends when it's on Comedy Central while I am flicking through channels, but it's not worth the upgrade to blu-ray.

I'll give it a miss.

Absolutely worth the upgrade IMO, the new transfers on Comedy Cen HD are stunning compared to the DVD.

I don't get Comedy Central HD, but even by watching the episodes on the SD channel, it's easy to see that they've been remastered very well. If this set has all the extended editions of the series, I'm definitely buying.

Yeah same here, it's amazing how many small bits of scenes got cut.
Warner would be shooting themselves in the ass if they don't release the extended ones.

You think so? You can't see them releasing this and not saying, having it turn out to be full of the TV edits, then a few years down the line coming out with an extended box set?

Yes I do, the extended eps are on DVD and I sure Warner will want as many people buying this set, even those that have the DVD set (like me).

If they release the TV edit ones then, there is a good chance the extended ones will never be released on blu-ray as the tv edit boxset would not have sold as well has they hoped. After all this is Warner the company that is not releasing some TV shows in the UK.

Well, since this will give bigger and better picture, I will probably buy it even though I have the whole DVD-set.
Especially because the DVDs looks pretty terrible I might add. And I love this series.
I think it will look better in any case, even if they tried to mess it up. Cause the DVDs are quite an artifacted blur overall.
Well, they might differ between earlier and later episodes/seasons, but still, it's just not all that great, even for DVD...
I want it! But it will probably be a good wait, cause I'm not paying premium price for it.
I can't afford to blow a big price that usually comes with a "complete set" all at once.

I just noticed something though:

I said "bigger picture"... Because it would be a wider image than 1.33:1, being 1.78:1.
However, on the release-page it says it will be in 1.78:1 on the BD-release, and that the original aspect-ratio was 1.33:1.
Does that mean it was originally filmed in 1.33:1 or broadcast in that format?
Also, IMDb says it was in 1.33:1, but the remaster is in 1.78:1.
Which still doesn't clarify whether they all mean it was simply broadcast in 1.33:1 or that it was actually physically IN 1.33:1.
Cause if it was, and it would be released in 1.78:1, it would probably be cut TO widescreen and not originally be that.
And we have another case like with that "little" WWII-documentary on our hands.

It was filmed in 1.78:1 but framed for a 4:3 broadcast. That's why you can see lighting gear and the occasional edge of set goofs, in the new HD broadcasts. You won't loose anything.. you'll gain everything.

Pretty sure the ratio for a 35mm camera is not 1.78:1... but either way, the original negatives were clearly quite a bit bigger than the 1.33:1 broadcast area and thus the new HD versions show more image at the sides without cutting anything off of the top.

Would prefer the 1.33:1 versions to be honest, the new ones look weird with everyone always in the middle of the frame, dead space and the occasional camera rig at the side. But I'll probably still get it anyway!

But if you won't lose anything, you'll still see lighting and such as well right? Cause nothing would be cut vertically, only added horizontally.
And then it would show "off-set" even more than in just a 4:3-frame.
Unless they crop it a lot, but they probably won't go back into reframing it to fix that.

Like I said earlier, any new release would probably look better anyway.
I don't know what the UK-DVDs are like, but I doubt they're much different than what we have here in The Netherlands.
And since this will be coming from Warner, I have little doubt the transfers will be great.

Oh, and I would like some proper extra content to be honest, cause there's next to nothing on the DVDs.
Maybe even an extra BD full of extras would be great, but if things will be like "per season", they could of course put it on the right disc.
Commentaries would be cool as well, hearing from the actors and creators maybe.
But I'd be glad with some proper interviews and stuff, too bad they can't do a "Friends - 20 Years Later" yet. :P
