Everday without fail I always have to visit various sites such as Play and HMV to see if any new SB's are being released in the coming months - I think it's become a bit of an obsession - BUT I LOVE IT! Standard Amaray releases just don't do anything for me now, it has to be a SB release first. I already have well over 200 SB's and have another 32 pre-ordered before the year is out (and probably even more will come along soon DAMN YOU PLAY.COM!!). Personally I'm not interested in which ones will be valuable in years to come, or keeping them sealed, no offence to those collectors who do do this, that's just not me. I like to open mine and even modify some for my own collection. I collected DVD's from 1997 onwards but I was never interested or obsessed in buying SB's for DVD, so I wonder where this new obsession sprung from or why I feel so strongly about them. As time goes on I can actually see my Amaray collection shrinking as I continue replacing them with their SB counterparts and who knows one day you may only see SB's on my shelves! My hope is that more tv shows also start to appear in SB and that one day not too far in the distant future we will be able to own all 6 Star Wars Steelbooks! (Are you listening Play.com, after all you are now the number 1 retailer for Steelbooks - keep em coming!!!).

I find myself in the same situation. I'm never bored anymore I can tell you that. I am always trying to justify my purchases but I always go ahead anyway lol.
I have 50 preorders for myself at time of writing. Not to mention out of those 50 titles quite a few of them I have orders for people on me. Last edited by richieb1971; 07-08-2012 at 09:56 PM. |

I didn't even know what SteelBooks were really until about a year ago, so I missed out on a lot of good ones. So now I'm trying to get a few old ones here and there while keeping up with pre-orders and new releases. After I got my first 2-3, I realized that I had 2 DVD SteelBooks (Planet Terror & Death Proof) that I bought from Best Buy a long time ago. I was always into collector's editions and slipcovers, I just didn't know at the time that SteelBooks were as big as they were. I really just put them on my shelf and forgot about them. I stopped collecting for a few years due to income after I had my son, but am back collecting now.

I don't have a mass of steelbooks this now (maybe about 20) but I have become obsessed. Before I was always like "It's just fancy packaging and it costs more" but now I'm like "It's fancy packaging and it costs more....but I don't care!" When I think about it, I shouldn't be double or even triple dipping for a release but I can't help it. I have a serious problem!
There should definitely be "Steelbook Rehab"! |

I tried once a couple years ago and I dont know why I never got any. Im back at it now and yeah it does seem like an obsession. I do have to temper it though. I surely cannot afford to buy everything that comes out and surly not the rare ones. I just missed out on the Japanese Batman ones and that is a bit disappointing.
Most of what I like is coming soon or not available yet. I will concentrate on classic favorites for me steelbook collection. If a new release comes out though and is a decent price on steel I will pick it up for sure. to the original question I can really explain the recent fascination with them though. Personally I like the unique art a lot of them get and the clean look of them. Im far less interested in a steel if it has the same art and the amaray version. |

This is one of those sub collections that fizzled out FAST for me.
I like all the ones I have, but I don't hit ebay up anymore for ones I don't. It was starting to crimp my guitar gear funds and we can't have that. |

At the same time I am trying to develop friendships here as I am trying to get SBs from Play.com and Media Market. Agreed!! Last edited by Jayze; 07-09-2012 at 06:04 PM. |

I do like the steel-books, but i wont pay over the odds for them, i have 2012, Expendables, Avatar, Minority Report and MW3 PS3, but i won't go looking for them and wont get a steel-book if the others in the franchise aren't steel-books, ill try and get a amazing spidey one because its a start of a new franchise, but avengers and TDKR wont be steelies because the other films in the franchise aren't steelies

Your wording is very confusing. Anyways, Batman Begins, Dark Knight, Thor, IM, Cap America, Hulk and soon to be released Avengers are all steelbooks. Avengers in Canada will be a Viva packaging. Last edited by Sparky4life; 07-09-2012 at 06:40 PM. |

I don't know if "WE" all went crazy but it is the companies like Play.com, Media Markt, Best Buy, and the various Amazon companies that went crazy. It was manageable when MM and FS released a steelbook every 3 - 4 months but now everyone is releasing a mininum of two per month.
It seems that the studios have decided to give these companies a shit load of steelbooks to sell and to make more profit for the studios. I guess paying $13.00 for a theatre ticket was not enough for the likes of Paramount, Universal, Sony, etc. |

I'd say until i visit this part of the forum and about little over a month ago. I'm now 30+ steelbooks and it's still climbing rapidly. I had never ever used Ebay to buy before i started hunting for steelbooks and i never ever even wanted to trade before i used this forum. Now i'm trading and helping members get steelbooks.
I have been bit by the bug but i'm glad i have got into it now when all these releases are out. I've pretty much nabbed all the steelbooks i would want and ordered others. I've even got Best Buy steelbooks coming in from America thanks to other kind members on here and i love em all ![]() I look fowards to posting up pics for you guys soon when i get em all together. ![]() |

I wouldn't say that I'm obsessed but I do love steelbooks. All started for me when Target had the Iron Man 2 exclusive. I would get many more but most steelbooks I come across are just a single disc movies, not extra bonus discs or anything. My steelbook collection sits at about 10, but we'll see how big it grows

I'd say I didn't really get into steels till about April when I went on eBay and searched steelbook. I was blown away with how many there were. And then. Found this site and it was all down hill from there. This site did widen me up to taking care of my I steels and protecting them.
I started with 2 DVD steels I picked up at a local used seller. Now I have over 40 with several on the way. Just got both media market iron mans and also TDK Japanese steel. See my collection for awesomeness. |
