[Show spoiler]Basically, the house 'won'. It seemed to repair itself by killing. Kinda like how in some movies a person might kill to rejuvinate their lifeforce, etc. The pictures they show were to show all the victims of the house, I believe. The wife was possessed and basically she was the caretaker of the house then.

Hope that helps.

Well, i am a huge fan of Classic Horror and Mystery movies. I have seen "Burnt Offerings" a couple of times. If you taught Anthony James as the chauffeur was creepy, i recommend you also watch other horror classics like "The House That Dripped Blood" and "Let's Scare Jessica to Death".
Enjoy..

I think
[Show spoiler]that the couple that were living there over took the new family's body's and the pictures represent how many times they've done it.

For those of you here experiencing BURNT OFFERINGS for the first time you might be interested to know that the director was the creator of DARK SHADOWS. Dan Curtis did the original soap opera and the re-make of the same in the 90's (an excellent revisit with an excellent cast). Dan also directed the TV film DRACULA which has just recently been released on Blu-ray. As well as THE NIGHT STAKER, AND THE NIGHT STRANGLER. Although he often dealt with the horror genre he was versatile and did the well received epic WINDS OF WAR, and WAR AND REMEMBERENCE mini-series. (the second of which holds the running time of the longest mini-series ever, 30 hrs. It is still THE definitive representation of the holocaust topping Shindler's List, especially since it was done for TV years prior.
The creepy score for BURNT OFFERINGS was done by Robert Cobert who work often with Curtis.
Like another member explained the meaning of the film I'd like to add that the film's title is derived from the biblical reference of a sacrifice, a burnt offering to God - but in this case the original owners of the house are offering the new tenants (and their souls) to house to keep in in repair. The film was based on the novel of the same name. It goes into more detail offering more background to the title where the film leaves it up to the viewer.

Burnt Offerings is one of the best horror flicks from the '70's. I've seen it a couple of times over the years, and was quite creeped out by the whole premise & story. Burgess Meredith & Oliver Reed are quite good in this film.

Agree that this need to be on Blu, pronto. I believe the regular DVD is long OOP at this point...

[Show spoiler]Really liked the ending where they were trying to get away from the house and the landscape/trees literally stopped them - very unsettling.

Let's Scare Jessica to Death & The Sentinel are two other great, very underrated horror movies from this era...

I'm a big SENTINEL fan, parts of it are actually word for word with dialog from the book. I only wish they had made the sequel into a film.

Very underrated horror. I also watched it on Netflix a year or so ago (don't think it's on there now) and it was rather unsettling. Oliver Reed is great

I read Scream Factory wrote someone would be doing Blu-ray for this film but I can't find out what label will- it won't be Twilight Time (how a lot of fans thought), Arrow either...

I watched Burnt Offerings on our local station when I was young. The ending creeped me out. I had nightmares about that movie for a while. I watched it on Netflix recently and it still creeps me out! A very underrated horror movie in my opinion!

You think this will ever come to blu-ray?

PS - the chauffeur didn't scare me as much since he reminded me of a coked out James Woods lol .

I liked the book when I read it as a teenager but thought the film was terrible and incredibly boring.
