Ya' got me all excited until I discovered it was a DVD, not BD.
That's too bad. Great set, although I would have either included a few more films or made slightly different choices, although all the "classics" seem to be there. I would have left out: - "Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex": a few funny lines and scenes, but actually a bad movie. - "Alice" - "Shadows and Fog" - "Another Woman" and maybe "Melinda and Melinda" I would have included instead: - "Take The Money and Run", not because it's such a great film (although it is funny), but because it's his first true directorial effort ("What's Up Tiger Lilly" was a re-edit and dubbing of a Japanese film). - "Mighty Aphrodite" because Mira Sorvino received a Best Supporting Actress award for her performance. - Either "Deconstructing Harry" or "Sweet and Lowdown". - "Match Point" because it was a return to form for Woody after making at least six bad movies before that. I'm going to ignore the films from 2008 on because they're recent, even though at least three deserve to be in such a set. I have a feeling that there are rights issues here since Allen changed studios over the years. Hope this set or a very similar one makes it to Blu-ray. I think Allen is a very under-appreciated director. If the only films he had made were "Annie Hall", "Manhattan", "Hannah and Her Sisters" and "Radio Days", he still would be one of our greatest directors. And in some ways, "Zelig" and "The Purple Rose of Cairo" are his most brilliant films because those work on so many levels. And having directed 43 films to date, he's certainly one of the most prolific, especially for a modern director. |
