Default When do you think Transformer sales will go down?

I am tired of seeing transformer up in number 1 in amazon sales (although with big gap between transformer and HD DVD #2). when do you expect this to go down??

Not sure why it bother you, but my guess is next week it should start dropping. Was interesting to see a Transformers movie in the 1st, 2nd and 4th place.

It will probably remain up top for some time just like Batman Begins or Casino Royal has for BD or 300 for both. Big titles like this tend to hang around. The exception will probably be when Blu-ray starts their long streak of big titles week after week for 2 months. Look for a new #1 title pretty much every week.

Probably quite a while for HD DVD. The Amazon rankings are NOT sales rankings. They are popularity rankings. And popularity is calculated in various ways.

The Amazon rankings seem to include recent order rates (how often they are being bought or pre-ordered recently) as well as the totals and/or perhaps how long a title has maintained a high ranking.

So, since a title like Planet Earth has sold a lot of copies and has been highly ranked for a long time, that portion of its ranking dominates even though the recent sales are probably well below the sales of titles ranked below it.

Note how the preliminary Nielsen's indicate Evan Almighty was the top HD DVD title last week, but is #18 on the Amazon HD DVD rankings (DVD #1069). It's peak was only ~#210 on Oct 9.

Back when Superman Returns on Blu-ray would go out of stock at Amazon and not even be orderable, I noticed that the ranking would drop pretty fast over a couple of days (down into the thousands and toward #10,000). So, I don't think sales from more than the last couple of days matter much for titles in the first few hundred spots amongst DVDs.

You really need to take Amazon's sales ranking with a grain of salt. For kicks and giggles one night I ordered a copy of an un-named HD DVD that was sitting at #26 in DVD sales. Checked the hdgamedb site a few minutes later and it had moved up to position #22. Now that's not to say that maybe a few other people didn't buy it, but with as little volume as both blu-ray and hd dvd move on amazon, its clear that one or two copies can move a title up quite a few notches.

I'm trying to figure out the stability of Planet Earth. Is it really continuously outselling/out-ordering everything but Transformers on HD DVD? And even through the BOGO it's stayed within its normal range on Blu-ray.

The past month

If it was, as you say, only based on a couple of days of sales, how many units does six months in the Amazon's top 100 represent?

My question is how well is Transformers (HD) really selling? All the usual suspects in my area (Washington DC suburb) Best Buy, CC, Target all have plenty of Transformers HD in stock? I have not read a single thread at any of the pro HD DVD sites claiming TF is sold out or hard to find. Could it be that the sales are not what everyone was expecting?

many titles on HD DVD have a habit of dipping off quite quickly, but for HDDVD transformers is the film to own. I guess borne ultimatum will be the same.

Does it really matter? HD-DUD will be nothing but a pipe dream soon enough.

Well maybe we can get some more members of this forum to go out and buy a dud player and then buy Transformers on dud to keep the sales up. That seems to be the popular thinking on this forum today. Who cares what Toshiba and MS did?

There are probably around 400k HD DVD capable machines out there. If Paramount was right in that they sold 190k copies then it means they've gotten nearly 50% of the install base covered. Odds are it'll drop from #1 next week and be out of the Top 10 in a month or so.
