Default Help with Understanding Decoding

Hi everyone:
I wanted to see if someone could provide (not a detailed explanation as to why) but just quick points on which decodings deliver the best picture quality when i look on the back of the blu-ray case. I am looking to get about 150.00 of movies this weekend with some giftcards and i want to get demo material but am not familiar with avec-1 or whatever the terminoilogy is, i just know one is alot better than the other but dont know which is which. If it makes a difference i am using a ps3 hooked up to a samsung 1080p dlp.
Thanks for the help.

On average It would be fair to say that the best quality codec is MPEG4-AVC.
This codec is used on movies like Pirates 1 and 2, Apocalypto, Casino Royale.

MPEG2 is also pretty good, the best title that comes to mind is CRANK

VC-1 is usually the worst but only because Warner uses low bitrate encodes.

Blu-ray quality varies to some extent independently of the encoding technology. There are excellent examples of picture quality with each of the available codecs. The best way to find which movies are demo material is to read reviews. Also, go for movies where you like the type of content as well as looking at picture quality.

A better question would be "Which Blu-ray movies have the best picture quality?", I'm sure many people will be happy to give their suggestions. Some excellent picture quality discs I've watched are
Casino Royale
Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer
Deja Vu
Ghost Rider
The Black Book
Spiderman 1 and 2 (and I'm sure 3 will be excellent as well, I'll be watching it soon)

Picture Quality is dependent first on the digital master and then the compression. With recent movies, the master is almost always pristine (artifactless to my eyes anyway), after that you are at the mercy of the compressionist doing his job properly assuming he has enough headroom to work with.

You shoulld first buy movies based on the ones you like, and not just based on the best eye candy.

Agreed 100%

First buy the movies you love, then start buying the purely "eye candy" movies. My first movies were mostly all warner, which sadly tend to have only "good" PQ. Then I bought some like CRANK purely for PQ and have been very happy.

of all the 20+ BD titles i own...i can say that PQ wise...nothing comes close to Pirates of the caribean 2. It pretty much has NO grains in any of the scenes...Id recommend this movie if you plan on showing off blu ray
