Im sure I'm not the only one who has received broken blu-rays due to Amazon sending them in padded yellow envelopes. Post pictures of your broken blu-rays/damaged slipcovers.

I wasn't going to take the time to post any pics, as I've been especially busy lately. But, I just opened The Samurai Trilogy (Criterion Blu-ray), ordered from amazon Thursday morning, overnighted for Friday delivery via UPS, and even it's case is broken. I'm at a loss, unless this stuff is being mishandled at the warehouse amazon mostly ships to me from, or it is somehow related to the padded mailer being too big (you can fit 3 to 4 BDs in these mailers), as I get BDs from Best Buy and Barne's and Noble, shipped slower, in unpadded mylar envelopes, several times per month, that arrive undamaged, despite no protection whatsoever. Nowhere near as often as I order from amazon, but still. This is getting rediculous. It's starting to get as bad as ordering from gohastings. Amazon's customer service is getting to be their only saving grace. But I'm getting tired of having to use it every other week.
Pictures to come. |

I haven't received any damaged items from Amazon. But one thing I do know because I worked at FedEx for a little. Those truck loaders are A-holes. And I'm talking about the freight trucks not the deliver trucks.
You wouldn't believe the things they do to packages. There is and underbelly in the trucks where smaller packages go and they just throw the packages down there. And the way the trucks are for the underbelly is there's a metal grate that you close so you can walk over it and load the rest of the truck. If they're packages slightly over the grate line they will just close the grate and smash the packages down. I've seen them throw printers, screens, and other stuff like that. There's also a certain way to load the packages in the trucks which takes a little getting used to because it's kind of like a puzzle. I've seen them jam stuff into place if it didn't fit. This is all do to the fact that they want to get these freight trucks packed as fast as possible so they can go home. Because if they can get a truck packed in 4-5 hours they still get paid for a full shift. And if it takes them more than the allotted time which I think was 8 hours, and took 10 hours, they would only get paid for the 8. I wouldn't be surprised if UPS was the same way. That's why if I order from Amazon I make sure to order a good amount of stuff so they have to put it in a bigger box with packing. Or if I buy a single BD from a seller on Amazon I'll ask them to send it in a box and not one of those stupid bubble mailers. |

I don't know about FedEx, but supposedly UPS is hurting financially. Not long ago, they let go of a bunch of drivers here and increased the workload of all the rest. I'm sure gas prices has a lot to do with it, but I don't get why shippers are having so many problems, considering mail-order has skyrocketed over the past decade due to the internet. There aren't as many stamped envelopes being mailed, but larger packages are probably 100x what they were before online commerce took off. And our junk mail certainly hasn't slowed down either. I've heard that the USPS's financial problems are directly related to a bill congress passed some time back, so that they could essentially syphon more funds from the USPS. If not for that bill, the USPS would have made a sizeable profit last year, over 100 mil, if I recall the report right. The USPS might be better off if they renounced their federal funding. As for the UPS, I can only figure their finanical woes to be related to mismanagement or bad investments (aside from gas prices) - the usual cause of financial problems. Though the UPS automatically insures their shipments too, themselves. So maybe they're getting too many claims due to poor handling.

My first damaged Criterion. Amazon offered a 25% refund, which should be a couple dollars more than what it'll cost me to replace the case at casetopia.
[Show spoiler] All shipped in these. All delivered within the past year, which doesn't include the packages that amazon had me return. [Show spoiler]

Another broken case from amazon just arrived yesterday. This type of damage is pretty common of Viva Elite cases. I usually don't even say anything to amazon about these, other than to waste a few minutes of my time on their apparently ignored packaging feedback form.
You can't tell by the picture, but the case is also split up the spine about an inch on both hinge edges. [Show spoiler]

Srinivas1015 & MoulinBlu.....Let me be blunt about AMAZON.COM and their shipping damages.....THEY DON'T CARE!!! My account was closed this past summer by AMAZON.COM for excessive exchanges for the exact same reasons you are articulating. I was a customer since the late 1990's and noticed a drastic decline in their quality of packing about five years ago. My DVDs and books almost without exception arrived with damage and had to be returned for exchange. At that time, thereabouts, AMAZON.COM concluded that it would save a fortune in shipping materials by not packing customer purchases appropriately to ensure a safe arrival. Returns and customer complaints were now considered collateral damage and a cost of doing business....AMAZON.COM feels they make more money by substandard packing and dealing with returns for damages. The problem is that if you ask for too many returns or exchanges they will ban you for life. Good riddance as far as I am concerned. Also, their fulfullment centers have horrific working conditions...They would make gulags from the former Soviet Union blush with embarrassment on how workers are treated. Workers fear going to the bathroom for fear of falling behind quota and getting fired. All they care about it getting product out the door as fast as possible and for as cheap as possible....Safe arrival be damned......

This one came from Amazon Warehouse, which, for those who don't know, is amazon's used sells dept that they sell themselves, not a marketplace vendor. It was listed as "like-new" when I ordered it. It shipped in a plastic baggy (as if they knew it was damaged and were trying to keep all the pieces together). The damage was not reflected by the baggy nor the padded mailer it came in, indicating it was damaged prior to shipping at least. The pictures actually make it look better than it was. I swear there wasn't a square inch of the case that wasn't cracked, twisted, bent, or all three, but the picture I took of the case open, before sending it back to amazon, was out of focus, so you can't see it all. You couldn't even shut the hinge door and had to twist the case back into shape just to get it to halfway shut too. And it's a Vortex! I hardly ever receive a damaged Vortex case; they're almost always Viva. I didn't even bother checking the disc to confirm it wasn't warped too.
[Show spoiler] [Show spoiler] [Show spoiler] This one was new, and arrived in a cardboard box along with several other movies from BF week amazon sales. It's not nearly as extreme, but also supports the notion that most of these damaged packages are happening at the warehouse, as the box it came in was pristine. Amazon gave me a partial refund to replace the case myself for this one, instead of sending it back. I can't as easily replace the coverart that had two punctures in it - one of which can be seen in the pic - but their partial refund was more than reasonable, so I didn't mind. If the punctures were all the damage there was, I wouldn't have even reported it, as such isn't all that uncommon, especially with these eco cases that have large, gaping holes in the cover. If you want to start one, I'm sure I'll be able to contribute to it on occasion too. Though, truthfully, I've had better luck with hastings' and Best Buy's thin mylar mailers than I have with amazon's padded mailers and boxes over the past six to eight months, again, likely because the damage is happening at amazon's warehouse, rather than while in transit.

i have a very bad one i could show if i kept the artwork. it was from wherehouse deals.
The criterion of le circle rouge came in a black dvd case, even though it was a blu, the artwork was all tattered and torn, the booklet look like it was mauled by a dog, so much of it is ripped, you can't even read it. i think this was a like new or good condition, i contacted amazon, they refunded my money and let me keep the item, which i transfered to a blu case and wrote the name in marker on white printer paper which i cut to fit it in the case i don't even know how it passed inspection |

And then, the new guy - I know the regular driver, he's always more considerate of his job - tosses the bubblewrapped amazon envelopes onto the truck bed from five feet away, even though he's still got to walk the whole five feet to pick up a pre-labeled return package I had waiting for pickup. |

I swear, you'd think I was making this stuff up. Just got another broken case from amazon. Like one I received a couple weeks ago, the seam is split so far up, the front of the case would completely break off, if not for the outer plastic that holds the coverart in. This one, too, was packaged in a cardboard box along with a couple other BDs. And, again, the box is undamaged, but one of the BD cases appears to have been smashed at some point. They compensated me enough for a couple cases with the last one, though, so I'm not going to file for a partial refund or return. The disc was loose, but what marks were on it, wiped off, so the disc doesn't appear to be damaged.
[Show spoiler] [Show spoiler] Not sure it'll do any good to complain again. I've ordered a lot of stuff from amazon in the past couple weeks, due to all the BF deals. I'm not sure what the damage percentage might be, but it's still kind of rediculous how poor their product handling has become. Edit: Viva isn't completely to blame for most of the ones pictured above, but it would be remiss to not consider their responsibility too. Viva Elite cases clearly just weren't designed, or can't handle common shipping or warehouse conditions. Not five minutes after posting the above pics I opened another BD that just arrived today. It looked fine until I removed the plastic wrap. I'm not even going to take a picture, as it's extremely minor by comparison; but the corner is chipped on it as well. A little super glue should do the trick, but these Viva Elite cases are SO fragile, and this wasn't even one of the ecos. It too was shipped in a box, because it shipped along with a PS3 game.
