I have never purchased any kind of "sound system" before and I really have little or no knowledge of recievers, speakers, and the cables to connect them. I am not even sure if the TV and Blu-ray player I use needs a specific reciever/speakers, so when you guys answer my question please be as specific as possible. I am looking to buy a "sound system" for under $500 and I want to be sure it can reproduce all the sound that Blu-ray discs contain and I wanna be sure it will function properly with my PS3 and TV. Any suggestions? (plz link the reciever/cables I need along with the speakers)

In order to have a system that handles the TrueHD & DTS-HD audio codecs you are looking at a minimum $500 for the receiver unit alone... and that's if you can find a good sale price! For an entire sound system that will do it, and do it properly, you will need to spend at least $1400 (rough estimate based on my own research... but I'm going to drop $4000 on my sound setup when I upgrade, so my research in the 'less expensive' avenue is rather limitied)

Yep you cannot do a full 5.1 for anywhere near that . The cheapest receiver that does MA decoding is the Onkyo 605 and that is $469 right now at Circuit city. As for the cables you can cable an whole system for around $100 at Monoprice. Then you have your speakers. Not sure on prices there right now. I now I am looking at getting a new set of 7 sats. and that alone will be around 2K. And I am trying to do it on what I consider the cheap.

For your price range your best bet would be a Home Theater in a Box.
Sony has http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...52921665238643 It's actually designed to complement their Blu-ray players but as with all HTIB without a player you can mix and match components. The only thing you'll need for your tv and PS3 are some HDMI cables. |
