i think paidgeek mentioned somewhere in the insider's thread that they're not allowed (by DVD licensing requirements) to do any firmware updates or the like that would unlock ps3 dvd.
the best we can hope for is somewhere, sometime, some kindhearted sony employee to leak the unlock code that's bound to exist out into the open. |

It was mostly chips and modding that led to the hacks on the PS2. Unless Sony accidently left a "test" mode the best bet is to get a Japanese PS3. I'm considering this if a silver PS3 with card readers becomes available over there (even if it's also available here) since I like alot of anime and have more than a few games and R2 anime DVD's.

you cant just use somthing like the RegionX disk on the PS3? It was a disc that you put ii your PS2/DVD Player that unlocked the region coding completely. It just promped you to select what region your dvd/ps2 game that you wanted to play was, then you inserted the disk and voila! - Your playing.
I was planning on doing this with the PS3 as soon as i order the disk. anyone tried this yet? |

This is kind of a pain, but you make backups of the movies using AnyDVD to strip off the region coding. Although with the price of decent upconverting players as cheap as they are, it'll probably cost you more to buy a spindle of blank DVD's than it would to buy the proper player for them.
