Default James Cameron missed the film rights to Jurassic Park by less than a day.

.
Now this is interesting.

There is An Alternate Universe Where James Cameron Made Jurassic Park As a Horror Movie

by Susana Polo | 11:01 am, September 14th, 2012

Terrifying as a pre-teen me found the opening “SHOOOOOT HAAAARRR” scene of Jurassic Park, the movie can’t really be seen as a horror flick. The book, on the other hand, is full of babies being stolen from cradles to be devoured in the Caribbean jungle, grown men being torn apart by swarms of chicken-sized dinosaurs, and an ending that doesn’t so much imply as outright state that the shockingly intelligent velociraptors have figured out how to get lysine in their diet without human aid, have gotten off the island by taking over a passing ship, and are now migrating across habited farmland in South America.

So… lets just say that a movie adaptation could have gone a number of ways. James Cameron revealed one possibility last weekend: apparently, he missed the film rights to Jurassic Park by less than a day.

“I tried to buy the book rights and [Steven Spielberg] beat me to it by a few hours,” he told Huffington Post. “But when I saw the film, I realised that I was not the right person to make the film, he was. Because he made a dinosaur movie for kids, and mine would have been Aliens with dinosaurs, and that wouldn’t have been fair.

“Dinosaurs are for 8-year-olds. We can all enjoy it, too, but kids get dinosaurs and they should not have been excluded for that. His sensibility was right for that film, I’d have gone further, nastier, much nastier.”

So, probably, imagine if the entire movie was like the opening sequence. Probably there would have been a lot more Muldoon, which I would have been okay with. Probably there would have been way less Lex, which would have been sad. It should come to no surprise to anyone who knows me that I hold Jurassic Park in pretty high esteem, but it’s always fun to have a look down the other legs of the Trousers of Time.

I'm glad it worked out the way it did.
JP isn't a perfect film, but it's almost perfect entertainment.

I pretty much agree with every thing Cameron said.

I dont agree however Cameron's take would have focused on horror. I think most people see Aliens as an action movie 1st and horror 2nd. Thats what the JP book was

Agreed. With Cameron, and with you...

No matter how much horror/romance/visual effects are in a Cameron film they all come down to an amazing action sequence in the third act.

Y'know what I reckon Cameron should do? Go to Mars!

I'm serious. He went deeper into the ocean than anyone ever has before, and I dunno, discovered something whilst he was down there, and filmed it all with a 3D camera (which I like to call; "The James Camera"), and no one seems to know, or care.

If anyone can afford to wake up one day and say; "Y'know what, I'm gonna go to Mars!" and then do it, it's James Cameron. And people would care. I'm sure if I said the name Neil Armstrong, to anyone on the planet, they could tell me exactly what he did that was so great, and even the words he spoke as he was doing it (you know what I'm referring to; the time he was making breakfast and said to his wife "one egg or two, love?" jk).

So James Camera, if you or one of your henchmen in reading this, go to Mars, mate! Then come back and re-make Jurassic Park, set on Mars, in 3D, and make the humans the bad guys...

Oh, yeah, that's the one where Laura Dern carries an Uzi, calls Sam Neill a numb-nuts, lectures Richard Attenborough about the male arrogance of science, and kicks him in the crotch...

Why are you talking to the camera?

With all due respect to Mr. Cameron, I'm glad we got JP the way we did. I'm still surprised how faithful to the book it was.

Cameron would have forced 45 minutes of boring romance into it.

I for one would have liked it nastier. I would not have wanted 45 minutes of boring romance however.

Personally I disagree with that as I read the book first and was pretty disapointed with the Speilberg flavor added to it.

I would have much prefered a David Fincher feel to it.

Same. I enjoyed Avatar, but I don't want any sequels. It seems overkill that he's planning to shoot 2, 3 and 4 back to back (or whatever the latest news is).

Would Bill Paxton have made Cameron's possible JP movie from back then, if it went through in Cameron's favor as Dr. Grant? Hmmm....

No I don't think . He made one movie about one small place on one small planet there is a heck of a lot more out there still to make . Should there be no sequels at all ? or only sequels to movies that you like ? should Marvel just stopped after the first Iron man movie of course not . That is my answer .

That was in reply to the other guy. Everyone has an opinion and mine is Cameron should move onto a different project instead of making another 3 Avatar films. I wished he was that keen when he made The Terminator films. Also I am hearing he will be retiring after Avatar what a shame....
