Default Question about the Blu-ray read speed

Can the Blu-ray read speed be updated with firmware updates, or is this a hardware issue?

Ganging the read speed from 2 to 4, for example.

The answer could be yes or no. Firmware is just software and is effectivly the operating system. If the hardware can support greater speeds a firmware update will do the trick. If the hardware doesn't support the speed increase then no it will not be updated. It's far more complex than this as all critical components need to be controlled by the software.

On numerous occaisions manafacturers have released two products an expensive one and a cheap cut down version. The firmware has been the only difference.

I would suspect that the early models will not be able to be sped up with firmware changes. Companys seem to be only releasing frimware updates to fix problems as they want you to buy the next latest and greatest. If you are planing to purchase a HD drive now assume it will never go any faster or more layers, than what it does now.
