Hi all, I finally became a PS3 owner and I'm ready to buy some blu ray movies but I'm sort of confused. First off my HDTV is a sony kdfe50a10 which has a native 720p but supports inputs from 480i/p,720p, and 1080i. TV is connected to PS3 via HDMI. Here is the question.
1. Will a 1080p movie (BBCversion of planet earth) play on my TV since it does not support 1080p? or will the PS3 or TV downscale it to a 720p native resolution? 2. Which version of planet earth (uS or BBC) would be a better match with my TV?? 2. Will i get the full HD effect with a native 720p TV or should I think about upgarding soon to a 1080 ready TV? 3. Someone explain my TV support inputs.Does it mean if I play a 1080i movie is my TV only gonna show it at a 720p since thats the native res???? Hopefully that makes sense . I just need some things cleared up fpr me. Thanks |

1. Yes the PS3 will provide the highest-res signal that your TV can accept.
2. I don't think the TV matters too much - I like the BBC because it has a little more footage... 3. Again, the player will send a signal to suit the TV if all is working well... |

It should play all of your movies at 1080i if you set it up that way.

1: yes have to set the PS3 to 720p or 1080i
2: the BBC one, it is 10 min longer then the US one (I think) 3: You will not get 1080p, 720p+ is HD. ou will just not full advantage of the blurays. If you sit 12 feet or more from your sized tv, your not going to see a diffrence of 720p vs 1080p 4: Support, some 720p/1080i tv's can take a 1080p input then it down grades it to the max resolution of the tv. So you can have your PS3 set to 1080p & it will work. If it does not support 1080p then the screen will act funny, you may get nothing & sometimes you get flickering, ect.... |

As other posters noted (and fellow newbie here, too ![]() But as for whether you need 1080p, it's more a matter of whether you want it: It looks cool, but mostly on a set bigger than 40"...360 more pixels of ultra-resolution isn't that big a difference when squeezed into a 32-36" set, and when shopping, there's still the 150%+ price-plateau jump to the new sizes and resolutions. ...Enjoy what you've got for now, and see if you run into any problems later. |

Welcome. I see everyone answered your questions.
To elaborate a bit, if you want to watch something in 1080p, you will need a new HDTV capable for 1080p. The difference is minimal to many people as the i (interlaced) image looks the same, but the way a series of frames is displayed uses interlaced frames to lessen the demand on the TV. The p (progressive) image tends to look more like film as the entire frame is drawn each time and not interlaced. Most people can't see the difference, but to some of us (like me), we can't stand interlaced images cause we can see it. If you have no trouble with your 1080i TV right now, stick with it. If you can't see it, then you save a lot of money! If you can see it and don't like it, look at a 1080p display in a store and see if you like it that much more to buy it. |

720p is better than 1080i (540p?).
yes, if you select PS3 to output in 720p, it will downscale for you. Most people like BBC version, and BBC version is in 1080p and Discovery version is in 1080i. Buy US version if you like SW voice. you tv is 50", so 720p will do fine. 1080 will be more noticable with very larger size. |
