Default Blu-ray HD capacity in hours ?

Hi,

I was wondering exactly how many hours of Full HD time can be stored on a 50 GB Blu-ray disc ?

If i ask it is because two Blu-ray sources quote very different capacities.

here on bluray.com in the Blu-ray FAQ it says:

"Over 9 hours of high-definition (HD) video on a 50GB disc.
About 23 hours of standard-definition (SD) video on a 50GB disc."

now look at what is said on the Playstation website: http://uk.playstation.com/help-suppo...ail/item48575/

It says "With a massive capacity on each BD, allowing up to THREE hours of HD video plus nine hours of Standard Definition (SD) bonus material to be stored on one double layer Blu-ray Disc, you'll be sure of no disc-swapping interruptions."

Well between 3 hours and 9 hours, the difference is quite important so which is it ?

Thanks for shedding some light on this

im sure there are many factors. For example the codec used and compression, VC-1 to Mpeg2 and finally Mpeg4 AVC (which i beleive is the largest and highest quality).

Im sure with the proper compression it may be possible to fit 9 hrs of HD video, but im certain there would be a quality loss in doing so.

This is just best guess from me and by no means is confirmed or fact.

Depends on the bitrate you encode in and that's why you get a range. 9 hours is probably very low bitrate(8-10mbps) where 3 hours is high bitrate (25-30mbps)

Well, one is saying 9 hours HD OR 23 hours SD, the other is saying 3 hours HD PLUS 9 hours SD, so there isn't as much difference as there might seem between the two statements.

As has already been said, it depends what you call an acceptable bitrate.
