Default Pacific Rim Uprising (2018)

Quote:
‘Pacific Rim’ Creator Hired to Co-Write Sequel With Guillermo del Toro

It’s difficult to really get across the idea that Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim might truly be a movie we’ll want to see more of after it opens in July next year. The idea of del Toro doing his take on giant robots fighting giant monsters will be enough, for some people, especially when one of the robots is piloted by Idris Elba. But until people see footage in the first trailer (coming soon, with The Hobbit) it might be a little premature to talk sequel.

But here we are anyway. Legendary Pictures likes the film, evidently, as it is not only getting behind Guillermo’s next film (the big haunted house movie Crimson Peak), but also hiring Pacific Rim‘s original writer, Travis Beacham, to script a sequel with del Toro.

THR originally reported that Beacham will write under the supervision of del Toro, and that a decision on the director for the sequel has yet to be made. An update clarifies that del Toro is going to co-write:

https://twitter.com/Borys_Kit/status/276067020397756416

So don’t assume that GdT will make two giant monster movies in the series; he could end up producing the second while someone else direct. He and Legendary do hope to shoot Crimson Peak starting in early 2014, so assuming that takes place as tentatively planned, it would be a while before the director would be available to direct a Pacific rim sequel.

Geez Legendary Pictures, can we get some Godzilla news please before you start announcing Pacific Rim sequels?

What happened to the Mass Effect movie they were in pre-production on?

As with all things Del Torro, take his plans with a massive grain of salt.

If it's not the first but is the second, we'll see a sequel. If it's not the second but is the first, we won't. If it's both together then something has suddenly gone right.

But is is very early to have even considered a sequel for this -- as Snicket said, with Del Toro, there are always about three rumoured projects around him at any one point and sometimes none of them get made. I'm quite surprised that Pacific Rim has been made, to be quite honest.

Guillermo Del Toro Says 'Pacific Rim 2' Outline Has Been Pitched

Pacific Rim won’t hit theaters until July, but the hype reached fever pitch when an exclusive trailer played at WonderCon this past weekend. Furthermore, Legendary’s clearly happy with what they’ve seen thus far since they’ve commissioned a script for a sequel. Here’s what del Toro had to say about the status of Pacific Rim 2:

Quote:
We pitched a pretty good outline to Legendary several weeks ago, and they loved it, so Travis and I, as soon as we land this monster (no pun intended) into the screen, we will start actively working on the script. The outline was basically approved.

Guillermo del Toro Talks Hypothetical PACIFIC RIM vs. GODZILLA Movie, and His HEAVY METAL Approach

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have gotten into the giant freaking monster business. This summer, they’ll be releasing Guillermo del Toro‘s giant-monsters-vs-giant-robots blockbuster Pacific Rim, and in 2014 they’ll have Gareth Edwards‘ remake of Godzilla. Since Godzilla’s purpose in life is to fight things (unless it’s the first one, Godzilla’s name should always be followed by “vs.”), why not a Godzilla vs. the giant robot Jaegers from Pacific Rim?

Hit the jump for del Toro speculating on a Godzilla vs. Jaeger battle, and how his Heavy Metal-influenced design on Pacific Rim probably wouldn’t match up with the reportedly more realistic approach Edwards is taking on Godzilla. Also, click on the respective links for what del Toro had to say about Justice League Dark, and his other future projects like Pacific Rim 2.

Del Toro made sure to be clear that there’s nothing in the works regarding a crossover between Pacific Rim and Godzilla, but he loves the idea. However, he also talked about how the different artistic styles might not mesh if the two worlds ever collided:

Quote:
So far with the sequel, what we’re writing, what we’re creating, is very different, so there are no plans. Hypothetically, I would love the **** out of it. I would love to see a jaeger and Godzilla duke it out. That would be too much for the human brain. But I don’t think there are plans on that. I don’t even know what direction they’re taking Godzilla in. I know somewhat that it’s grounded differently. Pacific Rim, my aspiration was, the color, the saturation of color, was almost an acid-drip version of the Heavy Metal coloring that I loved when Richard Corben was working there, when [Jean-Claude] Forest was working there. Super bright, super saturated, the crazy color and aesthetic. And Godzilla is more realistic, somewhat. That’s my thinking. That’s what I’ve heard. I don’t even know which way they’re going.
Here’s the part of our exclusive interview where del Toro talks about a Pacific Rim vs. Godzilla movie. Look for more with del Toro tomorrow.

And yet another potential cool movie that probably won't get made cause one side insists on making a "realistic" story about a 100 foot fire breathing lizard

Hey, never say never. Many thought that Iron Man couldn't fit into 'The Avengers', because the 'Iron Man' films are more grounded than Thor's, Hulk's, or Cap's, but it ended up working brilliantly. Grounded doesn't mean it has to be realistic, it just means it doesn't need to be over the top. I'm sure you could find a way to do it without destroying the way both universes are set up.

And if the two are successful enough, then another future potential is bringing Clover into the mix, if Paramount's cool with it and all. Add a few more new franchises and then you could see America, with plenty of international input, dominating Kaiju films for the next few decades!

Even clear up the relationship between Clover and Super 8. And bring back Zilla, and have everyone beat him down!

Thumbs up Pacific Rim Sequel

Quote:
By NIKKI FINKE, Editor in Chief | Deadline.com – 8 hours ago
EXCLUSIVE… UPDATED: I’ve just learned that momentum is building for a Pacific Rim sequel based on the international box office for the Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros summer tentpole. The latest development is the 3D sci-fi actioner’s Wednesday opening in China to a record-breaking $9M from an estimated 5,700 digital 3D screens, 117 digital 3D IMAX screens, and 22 China Giant Screen sites. That’s a new high for any Warner Bros release and 23% bigger than for any Harry Potter film including 3D Harry Potter 7B. Pacific Rim grossed a huge 70% of the Top Five market share there. This is after the pic broke through to become the #1 film internationally on July 19-21 as it rolled out into less than half the global territories. Pacific Rim releases in Spain, Brazil and Japan on August 9th. The result is that screenwriter Travis Beacham (who had the original idea which also resulted in Legendary’s homegrown graphic novel) and co-scribe/director Guillermo del Toro’s film will likely have a sequel. No one is yet saying this movie is going to turn a profit due to the high cost of its Industrial Light & Magic CGI which sent the budget to $180M-$220M. Unfortunately, U.S. theatrical sales are not expected to exceed $100M all in so overseas coin was crucial. But international was always a big part of Pacific Rim‘s strategy in a crowded summer marketplace. Through Tuesday, the pic’s foreign cume is $144.7M from 52 territories and its worldwide total is $229M. As I’ve said before, Legendary’s mega-financier Thomas Tull has the luxury of mining this marginal outcome into a franchise. Warner Bros underwrote 25% of the film and receives the global distribution fees.

And that will probably have more to do with del Toro never getting to it, rather than because of the first's fairly poor box office.

Not the best business sense to turn a film that may not even break even into a franchise. If there isn't enough heat to turn a decent profit with the first one, what's going to drive MORE people (who didn't see the first one) out to see a sequel?

I still don't know how this happens. With a sequel, you know it most likely makes LESS, and the rate Warner is putting out duds, you gotta think they may be tightening their belt in the future.

Warner's already out... They're not interested, they just want their international take. (The get the box international box office, Legendary apparently gets the most of the domestic box office.)
