I'm trying to figure out what Blu-Ray Player I should get for a 1080p/60 HDTV. What are the drawbacks of a PS3? Is there any reason I should not get it?

The only reason to not get a PS3 is if you hate the LOOK of it or the IDEA of owning a game console.
The list of reason TO GET a PS3 would be much, much longer including such things as: Fastest Load times, Most powerful hardware (ie many features can be added via firmware upgrades, lowest price ($400 for 40gig), wired and wireless internet, and of course the ability to play ps3 games, and more |

The main advantage with the PS3 is its reliablilty, I have never had any trouble with a blu-ray on it which is not the case with the BDP-1400. Its quick loading times is golden and it will probably support profile 2.0. The main drawbacks compared to the samsung is the lack of analogue 5.1 output (my receiver has no HDMI input :S) and the noise, which can at times be a little to loud. I find the audio and video of the players fairly the same, slightly better on the Samsung though.... |

The big one is the 5.1 anaolg outs. And if you have a newer receiver this it does not matter as much but if you want it to bitstream the audio it will not do that either. For some the bluetooth remote is bad, it can be fixed easily enough.

only problem with ps3 is no analog outputs for older recievers to listen to lossless sound. Or the bluetooth remote no ir inputs for a universal control. Other then those two theres no reason not to buy the ps3 internal hard drive internet access fast load times. When I watch movies with my ps3 I take full advantage of my surround sound so fan noise isnt a problem.

here's what I can gather are a few reasons.
1. to much noise if in close proximity. we have 1 in the bedroom and before I dinked around with the ventilation direction of the ps3 it would get a tad loud. 2. bluetooth controller. 3. generally to awesome and will shame the rest of your ht system. |

So no problems with it not being able to handle the interactive menus or decode any audio? It's not HDMI 1.3 right?

If all you care about is movie, go for a Blu-ray player. When I get a chance, I'm going to pick one up and leave my PS3 purely for playing games and my BD player for playing movies... I feel that playing both movies / games on my PS3 is going to wore out the laser more.

There are not really any drawbacks to the PS3 that could not be corrected via future firmware updates, hopefully. Some have mentioned the various audio things like no 5.1 via analog etc. If you are going to use it for movies then I would say hold out for the new 40GB coming early November for $399. If you want to play or anticipate a future significant other or children who might want to play games sometime in the next 10 years then go with the PS3. Also get the remote control for movies it is usually an extra $25. It can get warm and you might hear the fan but I do not notice or hear it when watching a movie or playing a game because of the sound. It is a very reliable piece of equipment with a failure rate of about 0.2%, Yes, that is 1/5 of one percent not 2% as some people have incorrectly stated on other posts.

The PS3 cannot bitstream either TrueHD or DTS-HD, and doesn't do DTS-MA at all!! Since it cannot do anything but decode TrueHD and pass as LPCM, then Im not sure that it will be able to do anything with DTS-MA for quite a while as there are no other players that can currently decode DTS-MA. Until there are a bunch of players that can internally decode DTS-MA, only then will the PS3 get the firmware update to be able to do the same. And I'm not very convinced that it will ever pass the next generation sound formats in bitstream. If you care anything about these new sound formats, then that should be enough of a reason not to get a PS3.
