Default Star Trek: Next Gen shot on film?

Is it possible, some day in the future after this format war is over with, that Star Trek TNG will be released in high def? I could really care less about the original series, but this would be huge for me if it was possible. Anyone know if it was filmed in a possible way for this?

According to IMDB (which can be wrong) it was shot on 35mm film

That's if they still have the negatives. Which is likely.

If you're asking whether we'll ever get the NextGen version of Trek:TOS-HD, what we've heard from Paramount is that all the "raw" actor footage without FX is safely preserved in the vaults--

And that they are considering "reassembling" a Next-HD version with newly inserted CGI in the near future, depending on how well the current TOS-HD finishes selling all three seasons.

So the hddvd of ST:TOS doesn't have digital remaster stuff that we are starting to see on tv?

I hate to say it, but if Paramount released ST:TNG on HD DVD only, I'd go neutral.

That's still my favorite show.

Yeah, me too. Just to watch the series finale would be worth it.

But hopefully by the time they get around to that we'd already be past this damn war.

TOS was on film and reportedly was remastered from the original vault prints--
(And looks pretty darn good, even though I've only watched the 2.0 episodes broadcast on the digital SD station.)

Fortunately, the TOS actors never shared scenes with the old spaceship/monitor FX, which made it easier to insert the new scenes.
Hence Next's re-insertions being a little more complicated, but possible.

TNG was shot on 16mm for the first 2 seasons, and then 35

Except for the ILM generic ship shots, all episode-specific VFX were shot and composited on analog video. Doing HD versions would require pulling out every piece of film, re-scanning, re-editing, and redoing all non-ILM FX shots. It is not impossible, just extremely expensive. From what I hear they have a budget of about $250,000 an episode for TOS's restoration. Doing TNG would probably be a million apiece (and sadly they'll never spend that on DS9)

They have apparently done some tests.

TOS was easy because all episodes have a master 35mm print that they used for broadcast and it's a simple matter to just do a new print from the negative and scan it, plus the aforementioned lack of needing original SFX elements. The HD DVD version is the remastered. Apparently a future Blu version will/would have included seamless branching.

They did that with Buffy too. They switched over to 35mm from 16mm in the third season.

It'd cost them 178 million to do it?

Can't really see them making 178 mill in profit off selling them.

I'd love it if they did this with DS9. They never will so I don't even know why I fantasize about it.

Although the film grain on DS9 would be awful in some dark scenes. But the battle scenes in HD would be a feast any way you look at it. I really wish they'd done the SFX on film.

TNG would be a welcome treat

it'd be nice if they did it on DS9 a lot of people didnt like it but i thought it was great especially when they started the war seasons

heard they're making a new Star Trek movie.. its going to be a Prequel no more Next Generation Movies :/ what's also sad is they're going to use new actors they're not even giving the Enterprise crew a shot. Scott Bakula keeps getting hit with tough breaks since Quantum Leap

For any HEROES fans...the guy who plays Sylar will be Spock in the prequel of Star Trek....I haven't heard any other casting rumors.

neutral means kiss my ass bluray anyone who spends a penny on hddvd is fueling the war. I wouldn't care if starwars/startrek/indy jones and lord of the rings all came out on hddvd I am not buying it. I wanted bluray I bought bluray and I'm going to see it through. I didn't spend over ten grand on my home theatre to watch pip and making of documentaries I want hidef with no compression.I'd say if transformers really sold 190 thousand copies there mite be some hd guys playing both sides of the fence.

Dude there's 178 episodes and a tiny install base. If this ever happens it'll be for down the road when there's 1 format and millions who own the player.

At present, even if it sold as many as Transformers, which is utterly impossible, especially considering it's a box set, if they sold the series at $500, making the 200,000 sales yet again... impossible... that's still only 100 million, minus all the replication and packaging and shipping costs and middle man cut.

To profit off a 178 million investment, you'd need to be able to drive actual profit. And from the DVD base, they've already sold TNG, so the real profit would need to be in the high def space.

Chris Pine is Kirk, Simon Pegg is Scotty, the guy who played Teddy on Kitchen COnfidential (and in Harold and Kumar) is Sulu.

I love JJ, but I hope he knows that he can't Galactica this. He must be very careful because if you screw with Trek, the pitchforks and torches will come out.

This is the first I'm hearing about a new Star Trek series. What's it going to be called? when is it coming out? I'm a huge fan, except for 'ST:Enterprise'...
