Warner Bros The Exorcist (1973) (40th Anniversary Edition)

The Exorcist Blu-ray

I know its the film's 40th anniversary which is a perfect opportunity for the studio's to capitalize profit on the re-release of a film, but why are they bothering with a new print? Does Friedkin feel in the mood to experiment with a new colour timing again like he did with the first Blu-Ray release of The French Connection or something? Because the current Blu-Ray looks absolutely fantastic, it doesn't need a remaster at all. Its also chock full of special features including fairly recent exclusive content made especially for the previous Blu-Ray, so more extras isn't a very valid reason either. It seems to me this is nothing more but a publicity stunt by Friedkin for fame because I cannot think of a single reason why this is even technically nesserery. Does anyone else have any theories?

I'm sceptical of that. The current disk looks fantastic.

Agreed. The current transfer looks amazing...especially for a movie that's 40 years old.

That doesn't mean that better can't be done.

What? this is being re-released all ready? I agree with the above comments, the existing transfer looks great, has both cuts, and it comes in a really nice digibook.

Q3 means that it'll be released to coincide with Halloween promotions.

Friedkin announced a few months after the original release how he had seen a new scan for a new blu ray and said how good it looked.

It sure does! I can't image The Exorcist looking any better, unless I was in Georgetown in 1973 when they were filming the movie.

As much as I love this movie, I'm taking a wait and see approach. I already have the last release and this new release will have to be a worthy upgrade to buy. I'm wondering what Ken Brown thinks of this?

I have the digibook release and like others have already posted I think the film looks fantastic and dont need a remaster. I know I wont be double dipping.

Add me to the list of people that thinks the existing Blu looks fantastic. I won't be double dipping either...no point IMO, unless this is going to be some crazy kick-ass collectors edition. Even then I probably won't bother.

Warner is doing new scans for Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind which also already look quite good. Still, presumably using newer scanning equipment at 4K should give Exorcist an improvement although we will have to see to what degree. Hopefully, they do this for all of their earlier titles which really need it although it will come down to where it makes financial sense.

I doubt there's anything they can do or add to make me upgrade from the fantastic Digibook.

That would be nice if the release was similar in packaging/contents to the ultimate collector's edition of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

I wish we'd get different WB titles on Blu-ray that have never been released instead of these re-releases

Agreed with the consensus. Focus on other titles not released yet!

The current transfer is fine
