Default Onkyo 605 help.

I have a question regarding the 605. The player I have it connected to is the Samsung 1000.

My question is what do I need to set both of them to to get true PCM? When I have the reciever set to direct listening mode, and the player set to PCM output, I am only getting sound out of my left and right speakers. It is as if it is only stereo.

Also, if anyone has any tips as to the optimal settings with these it would be appreciated.

What's the connection between the 2? If you're using optical, 2-ch PCM will be the most you'll get. Multichannel PCM requires an HDMI connection.

in the samsung settings, page 42 of the user manual, did you have the speaker settings for surround and center channel set to off? they should be set on either 'large' or 'small'

thats the only thing I can come up with to your problem...

I got it figured out. I needed to switch the HDMI Audio Out on the receiver to off, which in my rush to get this thing going I missed. Anybody know the ideal frequencies to set the speakers to?

depends on the specs of your speakers

Did you run the Audyssey setup? There are a number of factors to consider aside from your speaker specs. There is room dynamics, listening position, etc. Your best bet is to run Audyssey and then tweak things manually from there. That is what I did on my 605 and am very happy. You should be happy with PCM I recommend POTC1+2. They sound awesome.

Ive got it tweaked now so I think I'm good to go. Thanks for the help with it.
Ive already done Pirates 1 and 2 and Casino Royale. All were amazing. I hadn't upgraded in nearly a decade and out of curiosity I popped in some S-DVD's to see how they sounded through the new receiver and they are 10 times better than my old receiver.

It tells you in the manual. I believe anything 2" to 5-1/4" are "small" and anything bigger is considered "large".

Actually speaker size is not the only factor when determining to set you speakers to "small" or "large". It refers more to the speakers frequence range. Unless your speakers can go down to 25hz I would set them to small. That way the low frequencies are filtered to the sub. Hope this helps....

We know this. He is just asking for the basics. Besides, his Onkyo receiver has the freq. presents according to size.

Another question about the 605.

When I'm watching a Blu-ray on my PS3...the display always says Multichannel PCM.

No matter what i switch the receiver to, it stays the same...am I missing out on some audio quality by leaving it on multichannel?

Thanks

the ps3 does not support bitstream pass-through therefor you will always see muti channel until sony updates there system so that it will allow the audio signal to go staight to the reciever and let it decode it (this is one of the updates rumored to be in the the next firmware due out in the next week or two)

Default Onkyo 605 question

Hello, new member here. Long time lurker.

I'm not yet able to post new threads, so I'm tacking my question on to this thread since it concerns the SR605. I did try to search the forums, but could not find anything related.

First things first... Related to the question above, if you're listening to just the "Core" DTS (which you may well be if you're using a PS3), and you want your receiver to light up with "DTS", then you can just switch the PS3 to bitstream, and the receiver will do the decoding. If you set it to PCM, the PS3 will do the decoding and your receiver will display "multi-channel". As far as the sound goes, I haven't noticed much difference whichever way you do it.

On to my issue...

After reading everyone's raves about the uncompressed audio, I decided to take the plunge and pick up the Onkyo SR605 to go along with my PS3. I've managed to get everything working, with one exception: the audyssey system. My theater room is in a unique configuration that does not allow any practical way to do the 7.1 speaker set, so I settled for a 6.1 by popping in a center back ceiling speaker. (I had to buy a pair, so if anyone's interested in a Yamaha 280, let me know).

Anyhow, the Onkyo manual clearly states that if only 1 back speaker is being used, to hook it up to the left back connection, which I did. I fire up the audyssey system, and it appears to be working correctly. The speakers cycle through LF, C, RF, and RS and it appears to recognize all of them. But, when it gets to RB, it makes no sound. Of course, I was expecting this since nothing is connected to RB. I figured it would recognize the lack of the speaker, and move on to the next. But instead, it tells me that there's too much "room noise" and aborts the process. I doubt this is the case, because it worked fine for all the previous speakers, and it always stopped at the same point all 5 times I tried it.

I should also say that before I started the audyssey, I went to the speaker configuration menu and specified that I had only 1 back channel speaker. I triple checked this. Wouldn't this menu be able to "tell" audyssey to skip it? I've considered temporarily hooking up a 7th speaker just to get through it, but thought I'd see if anyone else knows of a setting or trick that I've missed.

Anyhow, I tried to do the speaker configurations manually, but I don't really know what I'm doing. I tried it out on a few movies, and it seemed like a big step up from my old system, but I'm sure it would be even better if audyssey did the calibration instead of me.

I've been reading this forum for months, and I suspect some of you geniuses may have some good advice for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Before I forget (and since I'm a new member), does anyone know when LOTR is coming to Blu-Ray? Just kidding, of course.

I will ask the obvious, you do not have the left/right channel speaker wire connection backwards do you...Just in case..It is unlikely that you crossed them so I am not being a smarta$$

I have my Onkyo 705 hooked the same as you with one speaker hooked to the left back connector. Audyssey was able to find the speaker and send the test tone.

Good luck buddy!

Thanks for the response. I checked the connections twice, but I can certainly check them again when I get home.

When you did your audyssey set-up, what happened when it was time for the Right Back? Did it try to calibrate it, not hear anything, and skip to the next speaker. Or, did it know that the RB didn't exist due to your speaker configuration setup, and skip it entirely?

Hate to say this, but you may have to set this up manually. I had to do this with my system, but it was not as bad or hard as I thought it would be.

Yeah... I'm afraid you might be right. I'm fairly certain I can handle the levels of each speaker, but what worries me is the EQ settings for each speaker. I was hoping the audyssey would do that for me. I have mismatched speaker brands (Polk fronts, Bose center, Yamaha Srd and Bk), and I've heard that properly adjusting the EQ of each can somewhat compensate for differences in timber. Since the manual calibration doesn't allow to listen to more than 1 speaker at a time, how can I get them to match? How did you do your's? Or are you lucky enough to have a matched speaker set?

Thanks for your help.
