I'm not sure why people keep trying to say that The Hunger Games is similar to or a re-make of any number of movies. All of these types of stories were told long ago in Greek mythology.

For those interested in the "murder reality TV show used to control a populace", check out the 1958 novel "The Prize of Peril" by Robert Sheckley and its (imo excellent) film adaptation, the French movie "Le Prix du Danger" (1983). (There is also a previous German adaptation for Television I think, from 1970 - Das Millionenspiel).
The 1982 novel "Running Man" (Stephen King under pen name Richard Batchman) and therefore its 1987 film adaptation are rumored to have been heavily influenced by it. |

It's a decent genre on the whole. I love Death Race 2000 and Battle Royale. The Running Man the movie is pretty bad though, it has nothing to do with the book. I'd like to see a real adaptation, as well as one of The Long Walk. That could bei interesting.

I absolutely love The Long Walk. Definitely my favorite book and would leave to see a big screen adaptation.

The thing that weirded me out about Hunger Games was that it was kids killing kids, that's kind of f*cked up. Even though all the other movies mentioned are similiar but they aren't using kids (Haven't seen Battle Royale so I can't speak for that one)

Yes, Battle Royale(which was released before HG book was written) involves kids killing other kids. That's why Battle Royale is mentioned most when discussing the Hunger Games. But because it is a foreign film, most US audiences never saw it.(the DVD being never licensed in US didn't help) That's why Hunger Games were more shocking to US audience than others.(fyi, Battle Royale is lot more shocking since it's rated R, and they focus more on killing and psychology behind it rather than the love angle in Hunger Games) But general idea of people killing other people for entertainment has been done lot in the past.

In The Hunger Games, focus is on faking the relationship for television. |

That's what makes it for me, though. I'm all about the highly stylized / dramatized violence and over exaggerated deaths in Japanese film. Itchi The Killer is the prime example of this, considering the subject matter and all the gore make it a completely ludicrous experience while maintaining a serious "tone" throughout. Not even to mention Tokyo Gore Police
![]() To me, Japan pulls this off really well. Hollywood certainly tries with things like Machete and Hobo With A Shotgun....but never gets it quite right. I have yet to see The Hunger Games, but i like this genre, so i'm sure i'll enjoy that film, too. I'm just so sick of PG-13... ![]() |
