The first act is absolutely stellar, one of my favorite things I've watched this year. Falls off pretty hard afterwards, but still visually stimulating.
Definitely won't pick this up right away, but if I find it around the $10 mark next Boxing Day or something, I certainly will. |

Its a very "pretty" movie. The art is good and high..
Problem is the story, which is brutally complex takes second fiddle to the directors artistic aspirations... Its worth a watch but I was left hoping someone else will give it another attempt. simply too many characters were relegated to the background and... he changes the ending (the philosophical reasons behind it) which just dont work at all. But it is pretty. |

My personal Best Picture of the Year. Sure the story's been done before, but not like this. I really loved the style of the film. I understand it's been polarizing, but it really worked for me.
I seriously want to punch the cover designers at Universal though. They take a beautiful poster image and zoom in completely on Keira. Asinine. |

My second favorite film of last year. I have seen it three times. It is an absolute audio/visual spectacle. It is also moving, romantic, and smart. Joe Wright further establishes himself as an heir to David Lean and Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.
A definite purchase, day one. Highly recommended to almost everyone, including fans of Wright's past films (including Atonement and Hanna) and those in search of a unique visual experience. |

I liked Anna Karenina quite a bit but I think the "it's all on a stage" conceit it employs ultimately undercuts the drama, particularly in the last half. Though the director wisely stops calling attention to the "stage" aspect at a certain point and it kind of recedes as you get into the story.
I'd hesitate to draw a comparison to another film. The only thing that comes to mind is Moulin Rouge! and there's at least half a dozen glaring aspects of MR! that AK does not resemble. The main similarity between the two is the extreme insistence on the unreality of the action - you are not meant to think this is all really happening. On a purely visual level it should look great on blu, though. |

its beautiful but rife with plot holes as a movie and he changes stuff from the novel. |

Hi, I would also like to recommend this film, if you do not mind importing from the UK. Quite enjoyed it. Could not get an early screener, but will have a review a couple of days after the release date.

If you're unfamiliar with the story, you may not like the ending -- so rent it first.
As someone who likes the book, and has seen many adaptations of this story -- I enjoyed it, but was a little disappointed that so much was left out (a lot of Levin and Kitty's story simply isn't there, which kind of undermines the point Tolstoy was trying to make about pure and tainted love). However, I think Keira is a wonderful Anna, quite possibly my favorite, and the entire film is very cinematic and scrumptious. I thought the stage setting would undermine it, but it didn't -- in fact, for me, it made it much more visually interesting. |

The Tolstoy book has been sitting on my shelf for a couple of years now, since I picked up the book for free at our office community shelf. I cannot see this movie until I finally read the book. On the bright side, the Blu-ray should be available for sale price by the time I finish my current book stack and get around to this novel.
