Default Home Movie Collecting

I've never been inclined to collect.

Those of you who do collect BD's and have DVD collections, what is the motivation? Do you watch many of these more than once? I rent about 99.9% of what I watch and only buy rare things that I know I want to see more than once in a few years. Many things I see more than once are so far apart that buying them on one medium would leave with something obsolete by the next time I wanted to see it.

I know those with children may collect Disneys and such, since kids often like to watch movies over and over and over and over.

It's sort of like collecting books, which I don't do either. The serious book collecters I do know only collect those expected to increase in value. Home movies are not likely to do the same.

I'm not bashing anyone; I don't find anything wrong with it. I just get the motivation behind it.

I dont consider myself a collector, never collected dvds except those for my son to watch. However, now i do find myself buying (not collecting) blu-rays, I dont expect to get anything out them except my enjoyment. I have no problem watching movies more than once so its not a problem. Its nice to have movies around when you have visitors you can always pop in a movie and show off your home theater.

i am however collecting blu rays/hd dvds , why because i love movies and because there still a new product i gain a small degree of pleasure knowing that i have a fairly large collection on the net and probaly one of the largest in victoria (maybe )

I only buy movies if it's something that I'll watch more than once.

I've got about 250 DVD's and 50 Blu's

Most of my DVD's come from sales, I watch the sale ads and bargin bins for BB, CC, and WalMart... typically you can find great movies for $4 - $5. And the Thanksgiving sale ads last year had a bunch of movies for just $2.

I don't expect anything to appreciate in value, but $5 is a good value for a 20million dollar production.

As far as blu-ray's, sales can knock down the prices to $10 to $20 each. I enjoy my humble little home theatre, so good blu movies are a bargain. I also rather disgust going to the movie theatres. It'll cost $15 to $20 a head for the ticket and snacks, the floors are sticky, can't pause it, there's always talkers, the chairs will never be as comfortable as my own couch, etc. etc.

So I can justify paying a fair price to add to my collection rather than paying the premium at the theatre or see a butchered version on cable.

jsteinhauer I think that you are exactly the kind of customer that Microsoft has in mind for their movie download service. I have thought all along that it will compete more with rentals than with high def disc sales. I've had video on demand with cable for years and have never used it. I like owning movies that I am fond of.

I am just an avid movie fan. I love movies. So I collect movies like someone would collect comics or stamps. I might buy a movie knowing I'm not going to watch it anytime soon, but If I wanted to I could, cause I'll have it. Sometimes I'll but a movie based on an actor or director or writer I really enjoy.

A true collector collects things because they love them, not because they expect them to increase in value.

Every Blu that I own, I have watched over and over, granted I dont have that many yet, but I will. So I watch my blu's all the time. I have watched The Prestige like 30 times, and it never gets old. Anyway my plans are that someday I will have a huge blu-ray collection.

I was a film major and have a very profound love of films. I have 720 DVD's and now have started building my Blu-Ray collection with 21 at the moment. I watch at least one movie everyday and love being able to watch basically whatever i want, whenever. Some people find it crazy to spend so much on movies but I enjoy it and I know that as my daughter gets older, she will also enjoy them.

Oh hell, if we are counting VHS, and LaserDiscs, and old video discs (before VHS for those that remember), i would have a retarded number.

We'll subtract VHS but Laser was the forerunner to DVD and they started widescreen format on disc so we should count them as a viable format.
Just knowing that you have those old video discs.....we have to count THEM.
Is that selectavison player you're talking about, or the old DiscoVision LD's from MCA??

I have been "put down" for the # of BD's I own, but I love them all & i'm still in awe with every film that I have with the picture & sound, & would watch them all over & over again , which many I have I dont just buy BD's to buy BD's there's lots I dont have & some I will never have. Yes it would be nice to own them all! But thats just not the case.
