I hope by the time these movies are due out, things are finalized and settled out these inferior codec issues combined on BD25 discs.

I DEMAND to see these movies in full optimized, kick ass HD with ALL the bells and whistles and I won't settle for anything less.

Miami Vice should be much better on disc as there were scenes cut out from the theatrical release.

directors cut of miami vice will be good and i'm also hotly anticipating pirates 2 on blu-ray as the sound will make for some good demo material.

Miami Vice will most likely be released in HD DVD because its Universal.

pirates = disney = bd only supporter

watched miami vice tonight. wow, very intense compared to what i expected (think bad boys 2 on crack). however, i was very disapointed in the film at the theater i saw it at. only been out a week and the film had some serious grain issues. it was very apparent with all the night scenes. anyone else experience this? wish the theater had a didgital projector, but when you live where i do you do what you can.

Grain is a natural part of film making. Some directors use grain on purpose, others don't. Sometimes it looks annoying, but there is nothing yo ucan do about it.

Yeah, you have to be careful.

If you try to remove film grain, you can very quickly and easily cross the line into a very artifical looking picture that can also lose GOOD data along with any "noise" you may have been trying to take out.

Yeah the faster the film the grainer it is. So for night scenes they tend to be a little grainy. THough some directors go for more or less depending on their personal tastes. Also sometimes the movie theatres don't keep their projectors in good shape or get poor quality prints this can also leave it grainy looking.

i understand the use completely, whether it is for artistic expression or crappy filing. i was just curious if people that have seen the movie noticed this and if they found it annoying or if it just happened to be the theater i was at.

Miami Vice was shot completely digital (like Collateral), so the grain is actually artifacting from the digital camera, which is a little different from traditional camera grain. The advantage was getting stronger colors out of shooting at night than a traditional camera can pick up.

Maybe digital video cameras will improve by the time Miami Vice 2 comes out?

I dont know about you guys but the movies by me are horrible. Normally I have a check list that I dont think is too far out of bounds.

1.Light off for the trailers
2.Sceen All the way open
3.Sound all the way up so it sounds awesome
4.When words appear on the screen make sure they are sharp.

Some how The good theater I drive 40 minutes to get to cant do these simple things. they have staidum seating which I love though.

my Vice story is this.
1:10 my movie is supposed to start, 1:23 rolls around and nothing is happening so I go out to complain. 1:30 hits and as I am going out again the commericials start to play. I go out to complain and to tell them to skip right to the trailers and the guy stops me and says, "I was just coming in to tell every one sorry and give free stubs for next movie". I say that i am the only one in there and this is horrible.

Well finally after 10 minutes of stuff the trailers hit and then the movie.

and this is where I am really confused when the movie started for me they are in a Bar scean with music playing. Is this right ? Because there was no intro and no screen that said collin feral or the title of the movie. If they cut the start of the movie that sucks but if they didnt it was a wierd start to the movie with no introductions or anything.

Just think, this is not the only time I have to complain. I got in an all out yell fest with the sound guy on Mission impossible 3. I couldnt wait for the movie so when i got there and found out that they were going to half ass me on the sound I barged out there and had it out with the guy.

First words and I quote
"you again ! You are the only one that complains"

I say and I quote
"I am the only on that complains because everyone else is too stupid too, so turn the dam volume up on the movie or refund my money.

"I cant turn it up its at the max volume"

"I have a dts system at my house that goes louder then yours turn the god dam thing up or my money now.

"alright I will go see what I can do'

Then Like magic the volume doubles and it is amazing.

Does any one else have these problems because I have hated the movies for years now and I am just about ready to just get it on blu-ray or dvd.

Yet when i go to florida the theater I went to 4 times over the month didnt have 1 prolbem and I seen V for Vendetta with beautiful sound and picture.

My grandma said and I quote.
They put it up loud and make it real sharp because the old people in florida are deaf and blind........

hahahahahahhahah

For War of the worlds it was almost the say thing. I go in and the curtain is not open all the way. Not only that its closed more on the left side then it is on the right side. I go out to complain and this lady has the balls to tell me the curtain cant open up because of THE ASPECT RATIO IT WAS TAPED IN..............................I told her that using the word aspect ratio does not impress me because I KNOW WHAT IT MEANS and that in the history of movies they alway fill the screen and I cant see how this is the first movie EVER TO NOT DO THIS. and god dam it like Magic the picture goes blank and the screen opens and then it re adjusts and fills.

AGAIN even though it was horrible no one complains

Cool Superman Returns

Hi there'

Just read your articles about the state of the local cinema's.

I must admit i nearly laughed when is was reading your experiences of complaining to staff and projectionist's "they must really love you coming in"

any way i live in the UK in maidenhead and must say that, our cinema is top notch on sould and usually good on picture, we also have gallery seats and reception area, which is also good quality.

However! aproximately a month ago i went with a friend to see Superman Returns and the picture was zoomed and too much to bear, which made the friend i was with quite sick.

Aproximately 4 to 6 of us got up and left the theatre to complain and this was sorted out quickly.

The other time this happened was when i went to see Battlefield Earth a few years ago in Reading about 14 miles away.

The picture was out of focus and was terrible so me and one other complained, after they sorted out the picture, we watched the rest of the movie, which was ok "the film was a let down, as so many people expected the story to be far better than it was", on leaving the theatre, we were all given a refund and they apologised.

I totally respect someone when they complain, because you are paying to be entertained "period". ( you must keep them on there toes to make sure that standards are kept )

Any way i enjoyed your article and thank you

I've experienced projection problems at my local cinema too. Once the picture was stretched vertically and another time it was cropped top and bottom. Both times the picture was sorted out part way through the performance.
I agree people should complain if they're not getting the full experience and so would most film makers I think.

I've also been to see a single film multiple times over the space of a few weeks and have noticed the physical deterioration of a print, with scratches, dirt and instability creeping in as time passed.
One of the benefits of digital projection is that a film can be exhibited at the same quality time after time and be identical to the master.

I know I ranted but whooooooooooooo I drive over 35 minutes to get to the "good theaters" and I have problems.

I work a full 40 hour week (for the most part) 2 plus hour moive plus time having to be there early, 2 hours 45 minutes. 30 minute drive not to mention traffic. 45 minutes. leaving the theater and getting home 30 minutes. So that about 4 hours to see 1 moive which is riddled with problems and if you go at a late hour which i never do it has so many people making so much noise, just about any setup 40 inch and up in HD is better.

Sorry for the rant but man I was pissed. Because when it comes down to it the guy running the movie is just that, a GUy with a job he does not want to be at so who care if the guy in the theater all alone has a blurry picture.....Right ?!
