Do you mind it if guests handle your collection?

First I really feel priviledged to own steelbooks in my collection. Its a joy to have friends and family over to enjoy a picture or two. But on occassion after supper when a cousin or a sibling saunter over to the collection and begin to browse I tend to draw the line. I almost always insist on handling them myself to select whatever the crowd wants to watch.

I always gleem at the shelf appeal of my steels and limted editions but get uptight at others just reaching into the cabinet as if thinking nobody'd mind. Its a tough call. Am I being anal? I know there must be a more graceful approach.

There are few things I hate more than people coming over to my place and touching everything they thinks look interesting in my collection. People who don't collect don't understand that you have to be gentle with stuff sometimes. Boy, do I have stories...

For instance, I have a nice tin that I'm very proud of and have been very delicate with it so that there's no fingerprints visible on it. Of course, my friend takes one look at it and grabs it with much enthusiasm while I'm left to pull a friggin' MacGyver once he leaves to try get rid of all his fingerprints.

I have two shelves I call Look but Don't Touch #1 and Look but Don't Touch #2.

I don't mind, but I always make sure they are aware that thy are in ALPHABETICAL order and that they need to replace the titles properly.

Don't get me started.. I empathize.

I use to have a growing dvd collection and vintage soundtrack collection back in university around '98 '99 when I lived in a quad. I worked at a deli two three nights a week next to a used cd shop which I frequented often. When ever i'd return home I would find my mates enjoying something whether it was a flick or something classic like a john williams score. I didn't mind my interest growing on them at all.

What grinded my gears was once in a while there'd be buttered popcorn smears on the case or even worse the disc. Or a cd jewel would be cracked. One of my morricone scores got lost. Well these days, fastforward to the blu ray era. My honey loves having get togethers with friends and its cool but they have kids and behave like kids too (I hope she doesn't read this) and they just peruse through my collection like they shopping at a farmers market. I just tell them handle with care. Please be considerate.

I use to keep a combination lock but she thought this was borderline being selfish. Nowadays I just try not to get too detained after work especially on tue-thurs when I know its a movie night so I can make it home before guests arrive.

Don't get why touching something is so common a reaction.

I don't mind people handling steelbooks, but why do people have to touch the PC monitor or the TV screen? If they have those habits I definitely won't let them touch other things in my collection.

I try to make things a little hard to get to anyway. To get to my steelbooks you would have to start opening doors, cupboards or getting to boxes above my wardrobe.

I don't care, they can touch whatever they want except for discs themselves because some people just flat out do not know how to handle physical media. So they can pick the movie, case and all, but I'll load the disc into the player

Same. Hence only a select privileged few are allowed to touch mine. My former roomies would drive me up the wall with this. I'd seriously walk in the door after an extended stay away and look at my collection to see of anything was out of place. I always knew what they watched because NO ONE would put a movie back in its slot. Initially, I had to wipe some discs off because of fingerprints. They got my disc-handling tutorial after strike one.

Never, particularly with art books. I had my nephew over a couple weeks ago. He wanted to see a book. First thing he did was open the front and folded it flat to the left, cracking the spine open all the way. I kept my cool and didn't say anything but was secretly furious.

No one touches except the wife...she knows how to handle them and is fully aware of my anal side as a collector

I don't mind anyone touching my collection. I've even lent some of mine to my brother for him to watch. Although I did panick one night as when he was on the phone I heard him say my nephew had my best buy Anazing Spider-Man in his hands and he's gotten to the stage where he likes to throw stuff . Luckily my brother got it of him and now puts all my steels out if reach from tiny hands.

So basically I'm fine with anyone touching & handling (as all mine are sleeved) as long as it isn't my young nephew so everything has to be away from reaching length lol

Same. Doesn't bother me if they touch any of my collection just not the discs.

I keep most of my collection in my room. The only thing I have around where people would go is my 3D movies. That's pretty much all anyone wants to see that comes over.

Yes, I do mind it. I'm not super OCD about my collection or anything but other people just seem to have a reckless disregard for discs that can be scratched. My girlfriend is the only one I'll allow to put a disc in the player or whatever, but sometimes even she's not that careful.

I don't really have this problem as luckily my friends aren't the handling sort. I don't really mind if they pick up the odd steelbook as they will take care of them, not that it happens very often.

I do have some display cases though which a few of my wife's friends have taken an interest in and tried to open to handle the merchandise so to speak. I keep them locked and politely explain that it's a display for the eyes, not a sensation experience for the hands.

my son has grown up with OCD tendencies just like me,,very careful with the discs..even with his xbox games he reverts to now storing them in sleeves after his halo reach disc cracked from him putting it in the case all the time.

Now my daughter is another story...got her own place etc,,and i made the mistake of giving her one of my older BD players...now she wants to borrow,,but she knows she got no chance,,
