Default Do you collect/buy 7" vinyl releases?

From reading threads here and those on other fora it seems that there is quite a bit of demand for and interest in 7" vinyl. What is the attraction to this format and how is the quality? Do you collect them in the hope they appreciate in value or do you play them? Perhaps you do both?

I'd love to hear about this as I've bought maybe a dozen of them in the 45 years I've collected vinyl. I just never got the appeal of them. Maybe I'm missing something?

I only have them from special releases. I've had a few that have come with online orders for newer records as part of a bundle, and then I also have a few that I've picked up at Record Store Day. I listen to them every once in a blue moon.

That seems to be the best time to pick those up. I even saw a bunch of 7" boxsets and stuff...looked kinda cool.

How the quality of them?

I've just started getting into 7" records. For me, they're a chance to try out a band that I'm interested in without dropping the cash on an LP. Just the other day I bought "Stone Letter" by Tomahawk and a Jasta/All That Remains split. I wouldn't have normally sought out any of those bands on youtube or CD, but the singles were cheap so I bought them. They're not bad either; not typically what I listen to, but not bad, so I'm glad I got them.

No. I prefer the 12" discs. They make
[Show spoiler]better cereal bowls.

Cool! Actually, it's a neat way to get introduced to a band at a small cost. Never really thought about that it that way. Hmm! Thx!

I do have some (about 50 or so) 7" singles, but I wouldn't say I collected them. 12" singles (especially those that spin at 45-RPM) tend to sound better than their 7" counterparts. I do tend to prefer whole albums, but as others have noted, 7" singles can be a good way to introduce oneself to a band.

I have a few of those, but I've always preferred full albums.

Personally, I find 12" singles to be the worst of both worlds--only one song, and yet they take up as much space as a full LP. That's not to say that I don't have a few (probably 10 or 15), but I try to stay away from them.

I have many 7" about 116. Some imports, colored and numbered. Reason I like them is b sides have songs not on the album unless reissued. Also the cover art is different from song to song and from the album.

Now 12" have different mixes of songs. I've worn out a few

One of my favorite 7" is def leppard photograph. Its an import. The sleeve has a top view of a 35mm Camera that pops up. When you look through the view finder there's a pic of Marilyn Monroe

I typically only buy new 7" records, because the packaging is so much better than the older ones-- older singles usually just come in a paper sleave, but the new ones are packaged like mini LPs.

I buy less and less 7" and 10" as time goes by. Mostly because I don't want to get up and switch sides. LOL I'll still buy them if they seem collectible though. Bought a few colored Mad Season 10" last fall.

With any vinyl I buy that come in paper sleeves, I replace them with poly ones. They typically fit inside the paper picture sleeve.

Had a bad experience with that limited edition numbered John Lennon singles set, all three 7"ers were wicked warped and quality was super poppy/ticky.

I'll buy a few at RSD that I know I can't find elsewhere if they have a B-side or haven't been released on vinyl, etc. I'm not keen on them, I find for singles traditionally 12"ers sound much better and I'll buy one of those even if it's on an LP already because usually the speed and unrestrained grooves result in a better sound experience. The 4 12" singles from The Verve's "Urban Hymns" all sound terrific.

I've noticed that a few of my newer 7" singles are a bit warped. It seems as though the thicker singles are more likely to warp than the thinner ones. Doesn't bother me too much, since it doesn't really effect playback, but I know what you're talking about.

I buy them occasionally. I have about 90 in my collection. The majority are XTC/Talking Heads/Elvis Costello.

I'll pick them up to fill the holes of the collection, but don't really go out of my way to find them.

I must admit, I agree with JV.

I never understood the appeal of 7"s. They (generally) sound awful and rarely get a decent release in terms of artwork etc. I suppose some have unique b-sides, but overall the 12" equivalent is so much..."sexier". Needless to say I have literally 100s of copies. Mainly due to picking up boxes over the years. I have some gems (IMHO) which I am happy to post pictures of, but will have to wait until my wife is out because "digging out the crates" is not her idea of fun! Jeesh.

I used to like them a lot more when you could walk into the store and see the TOP 100 all 7" singles on a wall for about 50p each. I remember buying things like Boomtown Rats, BA Robertson, Peter Gabriel, of course I also would stack them on a record player that was automatic and after each one the needle would retract and the arm would drop.

Great way for continuous music, but looking back I can clearly see that my equipment was definitely not audiophile and perhaps neither yet were my ears.

Of course...I was 7 years old at the time.

I mostly have Cyndi Lauper ones with Phil Collins, Weird Al Yankovic, Kylie and a Men at work one. I collect them if I really want practically everything like for Cyndi Lauper I have several 12" singles as well and have her on Minidisc as well though I wished I saved my two cassettes long ago since I seem to be getting back into cassettes again as well as 8 track for some reason

So they still make 7" for newer artists? I thought they stopped but that is a good way to test a artist out and see if you want the whole album. I kinda do that with online music.
